For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little"white lies",they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close,it is considered to be worth the effort."That habit is here to stay,"John Kounios,a psychology professor, said."Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons,I always press them. After all,I've got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?"25.What was the author's main purpose in writing the article?A.To analyze the functions of fake buttons.B.To describe some different kinds of fake buttons.C.To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.D.To explore people's different habits when it comes to pushing buttons.26.In America, the"close"buttons on lifts .A.are fake for the convenience of disabled peopleB.work only when people press them hard for a whileC.were specially designed to give people a sense of controlD.cannot speed up the process of closing the door in any case27.The underlined part"for this same purpose"in Paragraph 6refers to .A.making people more patientB.giving people perceived controlC.helping people to build up confidenceD.making people with depression feel better28.According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons .A.should give up this habitB.probably do so to kill timeC.consider what they do to be meaninglessD.don't know that what they press is fake.29.Several times my daughter had telephoned to say,"Mum,you must come and see the daffodils(水仙花)before they are over."I wanted to go,but it was a two﹣hour drive from Lake Arrowhead."I will go next Tuesday,"I promised,a little unwillingly,on her third call. The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy.Still,I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren,I said,"Forget the daffodils,Carolyn! The road is invisible (看不见的) in the cloud and fog,and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!"My daughter smiled calmly and said,"We drive in this weather all the time,Mum.You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience."After about twenty minutes,we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church,I saw a hand﹣lettered sign that read"Daffodil Garden"?We got out of the car and each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then,we turned a comer of the path, and I looked up amazed. Before me lay the most beautiful sight.Flowsof flowers of different colors seemed poured down the peak and slopes. There were five acres of flowers!A seas of daffodil! It was like a fairyland all beyond description."But who has done this?"I asked Carolyn."It's just one woman,"Carolyn answered. That's her home,"Carolyn pointed to a well﹣kept A﹣frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio (露台),we saw a poster."Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking"was the headline. The first answer was a simple one."50,000 bulbs (鳞茎)"it read. The second answer was,"One at a time,by one woman."The third answer was,"Began in 1958."I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun﹣one bulb at a time﹣to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top.Just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world where she lived and created something of magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small amounts of daily effort,we too can accomplish great things.Everyone can do something to change the world.29.The writer wasn't going to see the daffodils at first because .A.she cared more about the childrenB.they were on a remote mountain topC.the weather was not good enoughD.it was not easy for her to drive there30.What do we know from the passage about the woman who grew daffodil?A.She must have been a modest womanB.She worked as a professional gardenerC.She grew the daffodils over 50 years by herselfD.Being poor, she made a living by selling daffodils31.What has the writer learned from this experience?A.It's never too late to learnB.Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into itC.People can change the world where they live by growing flowers D.Accumulation of small steps may lead to something magnificent.32.The Cuban iguana is a species of lizard(蜥蜴)of the iguana family. It is the largest of the West Indian rock iguanas, one of the most endangered groups of lizards. This species with red eyes and a thick tail is one of the largest lizards in the Caribbean. The Cuban iguana is primarily herbivorous; 95% of its diet consists of the leaves, flowers and fruits from as many as 30 plant species, including the seaside rock bush and various grasses. However,Cuban iguanas occasionally consume animal matter, and individuals have been observed eating the dead flesh of birds, fish and crabs,The researchers wrote that quite a few people on Isla Magueyes could have caused this incident. The Cuban iguana is distributed throughout the rocky southern coastal areas of mainland Cuba and its surrounding islands with a wild population booming on Isla Magueyes,Puerto Rico.It is also found on the Cayman Islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, where a separate subspecies occurs.Females guard their nest sites and often nest in sites half destroyed by Cuban crocodiles. To avoid the attack from them, the Cuban iguana often makes its home within or near prickly﹣pear cacti(仙人掌).In general the species is in decline, more quickly on the mainland than on the outlying islands. One of the reasons for their decline is habitat destruction caused by t he over consuming of farm animals, housing development, and the building of tourist resorts on the beacheswhere the animals prefer to build their nests. Although the wild population is in decline, the numbers of iguanas have been sharply increased as a result of captive﹣breeding(圈养) and other conservation programs.32.The underlined Many students make the mistake of working on"the next step in front of them,"avoiding time to explore their interests or reflect on what they're learning about themselves. For example, students will look at a college and try to figure out what the college is looking for in a student. Then they try to remake themselves into that student, even though it might go against who they really are.Students let the"next-step mentality"hold back their learning as well. Many students don't take courses outside their comfort zone for fear it will ruin their GPA(平均成绩)and their chances of getting into a certain college."You may be unwilling to go outside your areas of strength for fear you'll get a low grade,"says Nancy."But if you think one grade in one class will ruin your chances of admission, you're doing harm to yourself.Colleges look at a number of factors in addition to grades.Students often think requirements of colleges are much stricter and narrower than they really are."Since colleges work to admit a diverse group of students, the best thing to do is be yourself and explore your options. There are many people in their late 20s who are unhappy in their careers and who regret that they didn't pursue a wider range of interests while in college.13.Nancy's advice is based on ______ .A. Today I’d like to continue our discussion of early American agriculture, turning from raising crops to raising farm animals. The animals on a typical farm in Massachusetts in the early 1800s would not look quite the same as the ones in the 1980s. In those times settlers brought cattle and sheep with them to America from various parts of Europe. Because the settlers were busy building houses, clearing land and planting crops, they had little time to care for their animals and most of the younger ones were not strong enough to survive under hard conditions. As the animals grew, they provided the settlers with meat, milk and wool. That was all most 19th-century farm families needed. And a little of the product could be traded for things they couldn’t produce. Now the survival of farm animals has improved much. Feeding is more selective and specialized: some for meat, others for their milkand wool.。

河北省模拟高考英语试卷2017河北省模拟高考英语试卷2017第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

选项中有两项为多余选项。

History is a record of what has happened in the past. 36 The really fascinating thing is that much of history has been repeated time and again. It allows us to learn from the past, both the mistakes made and the successes achieved. One of the benefits of history is reading how other people both famous and totally unknown have overcome tremendous challenges in their life. These challenges, although particular to a person, or to a certain time in the past, or occurring in a different country or culture, all convey the same thing. 3738 He encountered many failures while on the road to finally inventing the modern day light bulb. He could be held out as an example of a person who never gave up. 39 However, he did not let those failures stop him. He had a dream and he just kept trying different things until he did reach success.Or, consider the story of Abraham Lincoln who managed to become President of the United States even though he suffered many setbacks and personal losses. Most of us only realize the success of Mr. Lincoln becoming President. 40 His life was not an easy one. His story is one that motivates us to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles we have in life.A. History has a lot of influence on us.B. Take for example the story of Thomas Edison.C. History has some very unique qualities about it.D. I am sure he was discouraged by his many failures.E. They convey wisdom in their short stories of perseverance.F. Few of us knew about the many challenges he had to overcome.G. Only those with courage to face challenges can hope to live their dreams.

Since you can’t drive to all your dre am destinations, flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.Getting the best fare Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since many people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for themahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.Don't wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.Avoiding extra fees Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to p ay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before yo u ever even get to your destination. It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.Pack your own snacks. Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks –granola bars, homemade muffins, fruit and trail mix all make fantastic travel foods – into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.25. Tuesday is the best to book ticket at a lower for .A. fewer people traves on Tuesday.B. the flights are slower than usual.C. fare sales are usually announced on Tuesday.D. flights are seldom delayed on Tuesday.26. Which of the following will help to cost you less for a flight?A. Book your flight on Thursday.B.Travel surrounding Christmas.C. Pick your seat the moment you book online.D.Book early morning flights.27.The underlined word “hefty” h ere has the same meaning as .A. largeB.heavyC. fierceD. acceptable28. To save the eost fo r the flight, you should .A.check whether the upgrade is free befo re you hump to th e first class.B.make sure youclothes and are fit for a lot of walk.C.share your own snacks with other passenngers.D.plan to do the washes on flight.CMy mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant regrets. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征); I didn’t seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someone’s feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet. To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent! Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers. The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fine letting peo ple know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so stro ng that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further. An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet. As my forty-second birthday approaches, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about focusing on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.29. In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ______.A. to show how one communicates effectivelyB. to explain the reason for his silence in a conversationC. to give her high opinion of his communication skillsD. to give an example of those who have the power of quiet30. By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ______.A. look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quietB. try harder to prevent herself from talking too muchC. find out other reasons why she should talk lessD. survey people in other areas who talk little31. Which of the following best describe the writer’s character?A. Kind but pessimistic.B. Selfless but proud.C. Loving and active.D. Stubborn and sensitive.DA team of engineers at Harvard Univesity has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly.The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech integrated systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project lik e this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said. They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured. While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”32.The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that __________.A.they had no model in their mindB.they did not have sufficient timeC.they had no ready-made componentsD.they could not assemble the components33.It can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly __________.A.consists of a flight device and a control systemB.can just fly in limited areas at the present timeC.can collect information from many sourcesD.has been put into wide application34.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?A.The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.C.There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.D.Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.35.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Father of Robotic FlyB.Inspiration from Engineering ScienceC.Robotic Fly Imitates Real Life InsectD.Harvard Breaks Through in Insect Study第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Today we on the go, at our desks and even in front of computers. Today I’d like to continue our discussion of ea rly American agriculture, turning from raising crops to raising farm animals. The animals on a typical farm in Massachusetts in the early 1800s would not look quite the same as the ones in the 1980s. In those times settlers brought cattle and sheep with them to America from various parts of Europe. Because the settlers were busy building houses, clearing land and planting crops, they had little time to care for their animals and most of the youngerones were not strong enough to survive under hard conditions. As the animals grew, they provided the settlers with meat, milk and wool. That was all most 19th-century farm families needed. And a little of the product could be traded for things they couldn’t produce. Now the survival of farm animals has improved much. Feeding is more selective and specialized: some for meat, others for their milk and wool.。

AI used to think of myself as a fairly open person, but my bookshelves told a different story. Apart from a few Indian novels and the Australian and South African book, my literaturecollection consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I hardly ever read anything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors. So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing. As I was unlikely to find publications from nearly 200 nations on the shelves of my local bookshop, I decided to ask the planet’s readers for help. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World and put out an appeal for suggestions of titles that I could read in English. The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the planet were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries. Others did hours of research on my behalf. In addition, several writers sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works otherwise unavailable to the 62% of the British who only speak English. Even so, selecting books was no easy task. With translations making up only around 4.5 percent of literary works published in the UK and Ireland, getting English versions (版本)of stories was difficult. But the effort was worth it. I found I was visiting the mental space of the storytellers. These stories not only opened my mind to the real life in other places, but opened my heart to the way people there might feel. And that in turn changed my thinking. Through reading the stories shared with me by bookish strangers around the globe, I realised I was not alone, but part of a network that spread all over the planet.21. Which of the following might be found on the blog A Year of Reading the World?A. Lists of English version books.B. Research on English literature.C. Unfinished novels by British writers.D. Comments on English literature.22. Why was it hard for the author to select the right books to read?A. The author had a busy schedule.B. The author was only interested in a few topics.C. The author could only read books written in English.D. Most books recommended are not available in local bookshops.23. The author is probably from_________.A. AmericaB. the UKC. AustraliaD. Canada24. Which of the following words can best describe the author’s experience?A. fast and effortlessB. challenging but rewardingC. hopeless but beneficialD. meaningful but fruitlessBMy oldest child, Emma, just returned to campus after a long holiday break to finish up her last period of college. These days, friends and family have begun flooding me with one question: What is she going to do after graduation? The job market is, after all, awfully tough. Just this month the Federal Reserve Bank published a study showing that “recent graduates are increasingly working in low-paid jobs or working part-time.” The bright spot, according to the study, is for students who majored(主修) in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — areas in which recent graduates “have tended to do relatively well”.But Emma is a student of the humanities(人文) at a small college. She’s an American Studies major with a focus on the politics and culture of food. For quite a while, I think her field of study is so fashionable right now that I’m not the least bit worried she will find a good job.Yet the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve decided to be honest. “I’m not sure what Emma is going to do,” I now say. “But she’s gotten a great education and has really found her interest. — and I know those things will serve her well over the course of her life.”Nowadays, more and more universities and colleges are being measured by the salaries of their recent graduates. In this climate, encouraging your kid to study the humanities, seems, at best, unwise or, at worst, unconcerned with earning a living. But a college is not a vocational(职业) school. And promoting STEM subjects should not be society’s only answer to helping the next generation grow in a competitive world. From the beginning, we never urged Emma to pick a college or a major with an eye on its expected return on money, as more and more families are doing. To Emma, what really matters will be something that we may not be able to measure for quite a long time: Emma’s contribution to the world and how happy she is in it.25. The author’s friends and family_________.A. are worried about Emma’s safetyB. have been worrying about the floodC. are concerned about Emma’s futureD. are worried about the job market26. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. The number of the graduates is increasing.B. STEM graduates can be better employees.C. STEM graduates are in relatively greater demand.D. More and more graduates like to do a part-time job.27. Why did Emma choose a major in the humanities?A. Because she is interested in it.B. Because her mother told her to.C. Because it is increasingly popular.D. Because she wants further education.28. According to the author, what matters most in choosing a major is that_________.A. it should be among the STEMB. it should be fashionable and interestingC. it should allow a good job and a high salaryD. it should bring achievements and happinessCRecently a study, led by Pedro Hallal of the Federal University, suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have helped to create a world in which taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently have enough good data been collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia, Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.Malta wins the race for most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are active enough according to Dr Hallal’s study, compared with fewer than four in ten British. These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved(进化) to benefit from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days has nearly the same effect on life span(寿命) as smoking.29. We may learn from Paragraph 1 that_________.A. the decline of exercise rates is newly discoveredB. the study suggests 31% of female adults get too littleexerciseC. the good enough data has been collected from only one countryD. the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degree30. According to the study, women of Luxembourg_________.A. have little time to exerciseB. hate to get regular exerciseC. take more exercise to lose weightD. exercise more than men in their country31. The underlined word “slothful” in Paragraph 3 most probably means_________.A. powerfulB. richC. lazyD. unpopular32. What can be the best title for the text?A. Worldwide Lack of Enough ExerciseB. New Health DiscoveryC. Evolvement of Human BeingsD. Benefits of Taking ExerciseDWelcome to Arundel Castle which is situated in West Sussex, England.
