Mei Xiang, a female panda of 17 years old, gave birth to twins on August 22, 2015, bringing a happy end to an anxious wait that had begun in April. The birth of two pandas has increase d the excitement at Washington's National Zoo, but keeping t hem both alive will be risky.
Now that Mei Xiang has surprised the world with twin babies, zoo staff are working round the clock to help them through the first fragile (脆弱

Mei's second baby, a female, was born in September 2012, but died a week later due to lung damage. Poorly developed lungs likely prevented it from getting enough oxygen.
In the wild, if a panda has twins, the nature of the mother is to choose the stronger of the two pandas and abandon one. But zoos have developed a way to get around that: They will tak e turns to put the twins between mom and the incubator (恒温箱) every few hours, which means that each baby will get eno ugh time with its mother to be fed by her. If necessary, her mil k will be supplemented (补
充) with a mixture of infant formula (婴儿配
方), dog food and water.
The tiny pandas are especially fragile in the face of the mothe r's 200-
pound weight. In July 2006, a panda in China accidentally kill ed her newborn as it nursed. By watching the zoo's panda ne sts, zoo staff will keep a careful eye on the twins to make sure mom doesn't accidentally harm

Is traditional fairytales (童话故事)
good all the time? Recent research found one in five parents have abandoned (抛弃)
those traditional fairytales such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Hansel and Gretel because one third of parents said their children have been left in tears after hearing the ter rible details of them.
The survey of 2 000 adults was carried out to mark the launch of the hit US drama GRIMM which starts tonight at 9:00 pm o n Watch and sees six series based on traditional fairytales. Th e research found a quarter of parents w ouldn’t consider readi ng a fairytale to their child until they had reached the age of fi ve as they cause too many awkward questions. And 52 perce nt of the parents said Cinderella didn’t send a good message t o their children as it portrays (描
绘) a young woman doing housework all day. Similarly Goldilo cks and the Three Bears was also a tale likely to be left on the book shelf as parents felt it condones (宽恕) stealing.
Steve Hornsey General Manager of Watch said: “Bedtime stor ies are supposed to relax the children and send them off to sl eep soundly. But as we see in GRIMM fairytales can be dark and dramatic tales so it’s understandable that parents worry a bout reading them to young children. As adults we can see th e innocence in fairytales but a five year old with an over active imagination could think they are true. Despite the dark nature of classic fairytales as we see in GRIMM good will defeat evil
and there is always a moral to the story.”
Though half of parents said traditional tales are more likely to have a strong moral message than a lot of modern kids’ book s ,
they said they no longer like to soothe the children before bed . They might give their children nightmares(噩梦).
32. Why aren’t some traditional fairytales read by parents to c hildren?
A. They are forbidden to read according to the rules.
B. They are difficult for their children to understand.
C. They are too scary for their young children to hear.
D. They don’t have any strong moral messages in them.
33. Which of the traditional fairytales tells one can condones (宽恕) stealing?
A. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
B. Little Red Ridi ng Hood.
C. Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
D. Hansel and Gr etel.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards traditional fairytales?
A. Objective.
B. Supporting.
C. Disapproving.
D. Doubtful.
35. The underlined word “soothe” in the last paragraph means

Mei Xiang, a female panda of 17 years old, gave birth to twins on August 22, 2015, bringing a happy end to an anxious wait that had begun in April. The birth of two pandas has increase d the excitement at Washington's National Zoo, but keeping them both alive will be risky. Now that Mei Xiang has surprised the world with twin babies, zoo staff are working round the clock to help them through the first fragile (脆弱
的) weeks of life. Unable to crawl (爬) or see for about two months, the baby depends on the mother's warmth, milk and protection. Even so, misfortunes can happen. Mei's second baby, a female, was born in September 2012, but died a week later due to lung damage. Poorly de veloped lungs likely prevented it from getting enough oxygen.
In the wild, if a panda has twins, the nature of the mother is to choose the stronger of the two pandas and abandon one. But zoos have developed a way to get around that: They will tak e turns to put the twins between mom and the incubator (恒温
箱) every few hours, which means that each baby will get enough time with its mother to be f ed by her. If necessary, her milk will be supplemented (补
充) with a mixture of infant formula (婴儿配方), dog food and water.
The tiny pandas are especially fragile in the face of the mother's 200-
pound weight. In July 2006, a panda in China accidentally killed her newborn as it nursed. By watching the zoo's panda nests, zoo staff will keep a careful eye on the twins to make sure mom doesn't accidentally harm

Th e research found a quarter of parents wouldn’t consider reading a fairytale to their child until t hey had reached the age of five as they cause too many awkward questions. And 52 percent of the parents said Cinderella didn’t send a good message to their children as it portrays (描绘) a young woman doing housework all day. Similarly Goldilocks and the Three Bears was a lso a tale likely to be left on the book shelf as parents felt it condones (宽恕) stealing.

But as we see in GRIMM fairytales can be dark a nd dramatic tales so it’s understandable that parents worry about reading them to young chil dren.
