Mechanical Maintenance (Oil, Fluids, Break-In, Servicing) Everything related to the mechanical maintenance of the FR-S and BRZ 02-26-2022, 10:06 PM #1 Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2021 Drives: '22 BRZ Location: Vancouver BC Posts: 8 Thanks: 0 Thanked 7 Times in 3 Posts Mentioned: 0 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) Gen 2 LV Transmission Fluid I plan to do an early transmission fluid change in my 2022 BRZ and noticed that the manual recommends ቤተ መጻሕፍቲ ባይዱEM Manual Transmission Gear Oil LV 75W oil or other GL-4 75W oil (as opposed to 75W90 for gen 1). From digging through old threads, a lot of people had good experiences with slightly thinner oil like Pentosin MTF2 and Redline MTL (or even MT-90) in colder climates, which made me want to give it a try. Based on the 2nd gen manual's recommendation for a low viscosity oil, should I be sticking to something like Redline MT-LV over MTL? Does this mean the factory fill is most likely thinner than MTL? I can't really find much about MT-LV here and was hoping someone might have more experience with it and can compare it to MTL. 02-27-2022, 07:50 AM #2 Join Date: Aug 2012 Drives: SWP BRZ Location: NJ Posts: 3,175 Thanks: 723 Thanked 666 Times in 506 Posts Mentioned: 15 Post(s) Tagged: 2 Thread(s) I would just stick with same grading oil 02-27-2022, 07:56 AM #3 Senior Member Join Date: May 2020 Drives: 22 BRZ limited Location: Clarksville TN Posts: 1,082 Thanks: 203 Thanked 897 Times in 468 Posts Mentioned: 6 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) The MT-LV is what you will want. 03-02-2022, 09:21 AM #4 Purist Join Date: Oct 2016 Drives: 2013 FRS - Hot Lava Location: Milwaukee WI Posts: 446 Thanks: 37 Thanked 226 Times in 134 Posts Mentioned: 2 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) Straight 75w is a lot thinner than what was in the old car. Stick with that if its not a track car, It will do what you want. I was one of the people who put $80 worth of Pentosin MTF2 in my trans at 40k. I wish I could do it again, but they dont make it anymore. Im probably going with the Counter Space garage (CSG) 50/50 mix they have on their site, or Redline MTL when I hit 80k. Not long from now. __________________ WTB: Everything Verus RaceComp SS-1, Complete SuperPro bushings, TR Motorsport FF10 17x9 +45, GruppeS UEL, HKS Hi-Power V2, OFT(93/E85) 04-15-2022, 07:06 PM #5 Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2014 Drives: 84 CJ7, 08 Duramax, 2014 FRS Location: Oregon Posts: 471 Thanks: 334 Thanked 120 Times in 97 Posts Mentioned: 13 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) Quote: Originally Posted by Westen86 Im probably going with the Counter Space garage (CSG) 50/50 mix they have on their site, or Redline MTL when I hit 80k. Not long from now. Checking CSG site and don't see any 50/50 mix combos. I recall back a decade or so the subaru crowd figured out some mix of Motul and something else I forget. But that was not the 86 platform. I've read good comments on some Ford manual gear oil, but would have to dig the numbers back up. I looked for that Pentosin before I realized it's now obsolete. Darn, sounds like it works well with 1st gen transmissions. If you know the mix, please share. I'm running Motul300 and it's been worse for me than OEM in my opinion. Makes the car more notchy, but I've also added perrin shift bushing, whiteline trans insert, stage 2 clutch and other stuff. But the change to Motul doesn't seem to help until it gets good and warm. PNW near Portland for reference. 04-18-2022, 09:24 AM #6 Purist Join Date: Oct 2016 Drives: 2013 FRS - Hot Lava Location: Milwaukee WI Posts: 446 Thanks: 37 Thanked 226 Times in 134 Posts Mentioned: 2 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) __________________ WTB: Everything Verus RaceComp SS-1, Complete SuperPro bushings, TR Motorsport FF10 17x9 +45, GruppeS UEL, HKS Hi-Power V2, OFT(93/E85) 07-07-2022, 08:40 PM #7 Senior Member Join Date: May 2013 Drives: Dodge Patitas Location: Puerto Rico Posts: 968 Thanks: 1,817 Thanked 369 Times in 263 Posts Mentioned: 6 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) Quote: Originally Posted by dragoontwo The MT-LV is what you will want. Transmission is a noisy mess right now, so I was considering a full fill of MT-LV. 07-07-2022, 09:18 PM #8 Senior Member Join Date: May 2020 Drives: 22 BRZ limited Location: Clarksville TN Posts: 1,082 Thanks: 203 Thanked 897 Times in 468 Posts Mentioned: 6 Post(s) Tagged: 0 Thread(s) Quote: Originally Posted by sato Just noticed this in Redline's Website. I did put it in my '20 and found it a little better than the stock fluid for street driving.
