VI. Reading comprehension (共50分)
A. Choose the best answer. (12分)
Thanksgiving Day was near. One day, a first-grade teacher, Miss White, let her students draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.
Most students would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional foods of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art. Miss White was right. But Douglas made a differe nt kind of picture. When he was asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand. His picture brought imagination to his classmates and Miss White. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested it was a police officer’s hand, because the police protect and care for people.
While the children were discussing with each other, Miss White stood at Douglas’ desk a nd asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked up and whispered, “It’s yours, Miss White.” What Douglas had said reminded Miss White of the time she had taken his hand and walked with him here and there. How often she had said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.”Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand. With tears (眼泪) in her eyes, Miss White went on with her work.
The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching, parents parenting, friends showing friendship, and how much Miss White’s hand means t o Douglas. He might not always say thanks, but he’ll remember the hand that Miss White reaches out.
( )69. Miss White asked her students to draw a picture to celebrate ____.
A. Charismas
B. Thanksgiving Day
C. Teachers’ Day
D. Mother’s Day
( )70. What kind of picture did Miss White ask her students to draw?
A. A picture which expressed their love to their parents.
B. A picture which showed their favourite traditional food.
C. A picture that could show their appreciation of something.
D. A picture that could be given to their friends as a gift.
( )71. It can be known from the passage that ____.
A. most students drew some kinds of foods just as Miss White expected
B. Douglas’ family was poor and he couldn’t afford a turkey or other foods
C. Miss White often gave Douglas pencils to encourage him in drawing
D. Douglas didn’t know how to draw a turkey and other traditional foods
( )72. Miss White and the students felt____ when they saw Douglas’ picture.
A. angry
B. disappointed
C. proud
D. puzzled
( )73. Why did Douglas draw the picture?
A. Because Miss White’s ha nd was the most beautiful hand he had ever seen.
B. Because he thought Miss White had given him a lot of care and help with her hand.
C. Because he wanted Miss White to take his hand when they went out for activities.
D. Because he was good at drawing hands and was asked to draw one by his teacher. ( )74. By telling the story, the writer wants to tell us ____.
A. to be a good teacher is not easy
B. how to express our thankfulness
C. kindness will be always remembered
D. the best way to get along with our teacher
B. Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage(12 分)
Twenty years ago only a very small number of people had the skills or equipment to make fake money. Today computer, copier and printer technology is so advanced that almost anyone can “make” money. With the new technology there is a new kind of casual faking machine. The number of bills made by casual fakers on their home or office computer is growing fast. In fact, this number has doubled every year since 1989! There is no way to __75__ faking completely. But the government has recently found a few ways to make casual faking very __76__.
One way is to put very, very small words, called microprints (微型印刷), in hidden places on the bill. The words are only 6/1000 inch. No one can read them __77__ a magnifying glass, and they are too small to come out clearly on a copier. If someone copies a bill that has microprints, the micro printed words on the bill will only be black lines.
Another way to stop people from making fake money on their home computer is to use special color-changing ink. Money printed with color-changing ink will look green from one angle and yellow from __78__. Home computers cannot use color-changing ink. Copies from a home computer only h ave normal ink and that can be noticed quite easily.
Additionally, money is made on special paper with very small pieces of red and blue silk mixed in. And on each bill there is a special line that runs from the top to the bottom of the bill. The blue turns red if you put it under a special __79____. This line and the special paper with red and blue silk are not easy for home computers to copy.
The government must try many different ways to stop faking. It needs to keep __80___ the way money is made because fakers can learn to co py the changes. Today copiers can’t copy micro printed words or color-changing ink. But, in a few years, who knows?

With waste chocolate and materials made from carrots, potatoes and cotton cloth, the world’s first sustainable (不破坏生态平衡的) Formula 3 racing car comes into being. It has a top speed of 135 miles per hour and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. Sounds cool? Of course!
Lola is the world’s first racing car made from sustainable materials. The researchers showed their new invention at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) energy meeting in Boston.
“It’s completely harmless, using materials that can be seen in a rubbish field. It allows people to deal with recycling (再循环) without any difficulty,” said Kerry Kirwan, one of the car’s designers at the university. “In fact, the public really likes the car, because it’s the first car that is good for the environment.”
Many of the car’s materials can be found at a farmer’s market or in a rubbish box, because most of the materials are waste. The car is designed to run on special oil made from waste from chocolate factories or other plant-based oils.
Among Lola’s other special features is a radiator (散热器) that changes waste gases back to O2. “So we are proud of it because it’s a racing car that cleans up as it goes along,” said Steve Maggs, another member of the design team. The racing car took the university more than nine months to develop and cost around $200,000. Kirwan said that the thinking behind the project was to find a way to really put recycled materials to the test. And the car is a good example.

Ⅲ. Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false. I’m in favour of keeping pets. In my opinion, there are a lot of good reasons for keeping pets. First, pets are friendly to people. For example, when we feel lonely, they can stay by our side. When we are in danger, they can save us. Second, cats and dogs are good for people’s health. New research shows that dog and cat owners have less heart trouble than other people. Doctors have learnt that walking a dog is good exercise. What’s more, pets can bring great fun to our life. I have a dog. It’s lovely and clever. It can also guard the door. When I come back home, It will jump up and down. In addition, pets are very helpful, especially dogs. A dog, Bear, was brave. He saved a drowning boy and helped to save people in danger. The long hours’ hard work hurt Bear’s health. Bear died on September 23, 2002. He was named the most famous dog in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. In one word, pets are our friends. We should encourage people to keep pets.
Ⅳ. Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks.
Dogs have feelings. Sometimes they may feel angry or afraid. If you watch a dog carefully, you can find out how it feels. You can see what it is trying to tell you.
If a dog is afraid of you, it will look away from you. It will run away, too. Sometimes the hair on its back stands up. Dogs can also feel sorry. At times when I get home, my dog gives me a sorry look. Then I know it has done something wrong.
Dogs need our love and care. A dog may be unhappy when you leave it alone for a long time. Play with it. Talk with it. Always remember that a dog has feelings just as we do. Talk to a dog, and it’ll talk to you, too.
