The Sahara Festival is a celebration of the very recent past. The three-day event is not fixed to the same dates each year, but generally takes place in November or December. It is well attended by tourists, but even better attended by locals.
During the opening ceremonies(仪式), after the official greetings from the government leaders, people who attend the festival begin to march smartly before the viewing stands, and white camels(骆驼)transport their riders across the sands. Horsemen from different nations display their beautiful clothes and their fine horsemanship. One following another, groups of musicians and dancers from all over the Sahara take their turn to show off their wonderful traditional culture. Groups of men in blue and yellow play horns and beat drums as they dance in different designs(传统文化). On their knees in the sand, a group of women in long dark dresses dance with their hair: their long, dark, shiny hair is thrown back and forth in the wind to the rhythm of their dance.
The local and visiting Italian dogs are anxious to run after hares. The crowd is on its feet for the camel races. Camels and riders run far into the distance, and then return to the finish line in front of the cheering people.
Towards the evening, there comes the grand finale_of the opening day, an extremely exciting horserace. All the riders run very fast on horseback. Some riders hang off the side of their saddles. Some even ride upside down——their legs and feet straight up in the air——all at full speed. Others rush down the course together, men arm in arm, on different horses. On and on they went. So fast and so wonderful!

To get a good mark in examination has been regarded as being most important for a student, and it is also what parents always expect their children to do. But is it enough? These days increasing attention has been paid in schools across the country to what is called quality education. It means that a student, apart from doing well in exams, should develop his skills in other ways so as to turn himself into a qualified graduate for modernization of the motherland.
Quality education, said Xing Jizu, Party Secretary of the Education bureau of downtown Hongkou District Shanghai, aims to help students to gain a high moral standard, a strong sense of patriotism(爱国), a strong wish for learning, as well as a sound mind and body.
“We need reforms(改革)to achieve our goal for quality education,” Mr. Xing Jizu told SSP. He also outlined what they had planned.
Xing said that return of Hong Kong to the mainland in July 1997, for example, was regarded as a very good chance for the education advances. So a lot of related activities were organized at all the schools in Hongkou.
Besides, all schools in the district were advised to set up after-class art of science groups. Student's art festival is to be held in each school every year. As for physical education, every student is required to have at least one hour of exercise a day. Every year, a sports meet will take place at each school.
“What we are doing is by no means to weaken the importance of the regular classroom teaching or exam results,”Xing pointed out. “Instead, we hope that through quality education, students can learn more, in less time, in an easier way. Only in this way can we bring up children fit for the bright future of China.”

C
Olaf Stapledon wrote a book called First and Last Men in which he looked millions of years ahead. He told of different men and of strange civilization(文明),broken up by long “dark
ages”in between. In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men. In 2000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last men.
However, most ideas about “the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? That's much more difficult”.
When men and women lived by hunting 50 000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50 000 years from now, we may seem as primitive(原始的)in our ideas as the Stone-Age hunters do to us.Perhaps they will spend their days gollocking to make new spundels, or struggling with their ballalators through the cribe. These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply can't think of.
So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First, unless we remember how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live on because we are careless or greedy(贪婪)or quarrelsome, our grandchildren will not bother to think of excuses for us.
Second, by trying to escape from present and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set your imagination free when you think about the future.
44.A particular mention made of Stapledon's book in the opening paragraph________.
A.serves as description of human history
B.serves as an instruction to the discussion
C.shows a disagreement of views
D.shows the popularity of the book

45.The text discusses men and women 50 000 years ago and 50 000 years from now in order to show that______.
A.human history is extremely long
B.life has changed a great deal
C.it is useless to plan for the next 50 years
D.it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future

46.Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to________.
A.tools used in farming
B.ideas about modern life
C.unknown things in the future
D.hunting skills in the Stone Age

47.According to the writer of the text, imagining the future will________.
A.serve the interests of the present and future generations
B.enable us to better understand human history
C.help us to improve farming
D.make life worth living

D(2018·四川)
Honesty comes in many forms. First there's self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear_through_smoke_and_mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I'm not. I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it. “Always be a first-class version(版本)of yourself, instead of a second—class
version of somebody else.”
Then there's honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you've ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can't do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:
In my second year of study, there w ere three kids in my math class w ho didn't do w ell. I w as really good at it. I w ould charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I'd w rite on a little piece of paper all the right ans w ers, and hand them off.
At first I felt like I w as making money, kind of a nice job. I w asn't thinking about ho w it could hurt all of us. After a w hile I realized I shouldn't do that any more, because I w asn't really helping them. They w eren't learning anything, and it w ould only get harder do w n the road. Cheating certainly w asn't helping me.
It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.

48.The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors”in the first paragraph means“________”.
A.to be honest
B.to be unreal
C.to become clear
D.to come from an imagined world

由前一句:“Is what people see the real article”可知,“do you appear through smoke and mirrors”是其对立面,前面是real,后面就是“unreal”。

49.Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland's words?
A.Be your true self rather than follow others.
B.Don't copy others or you can't be the first class.
C.Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
D.Don't learn from others unless they're excellent.

50.What does the author expect to show by Jeff's story?
A.Honesty can be of great help.
B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
C.Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.
D.One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.

51.In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express________.
A.one must be brave to be honest
B.it's difficult to be honest when others are not
C.one should be honest when making a deposit
D.honesty in one's actions can help him in the future

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simultaneously(同时地)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what's happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the screen—they can't do both—and they don't understand that women can. Besides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationships—not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the
screen.
During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally. Since women originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purpose: to build relationships and make friends. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.
Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding. A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours.
There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls' mothers talked to them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author of Social Beha v iour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked to and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boys. Scientific evidence shows parents respond to the brain bias of their children. Since a girl's brain is better organized to send and receive speech, we therefore talk them more. Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually disappointed to receive only short grunts in reply.

52.While watching TV with others, women usually talk a lot because they ________.
A.are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends
B.can both talk and watch the screen at the same time
C.think they can have a good time and develop relationships
D.have to explain the plot and body language to their husbands

由第一段最后一句话“Besides, women consider that...at the screen”可知。

53.After a vacation with her girlfriend, a woman would talk to her again on the phone for hours in order to ________.
A.experience the happy time again
B.keep a close tie with her
C.recommend her a new scenic spot
D.remind her of something forgotten

由第三段第一句中“...but a woman sees it as a means of bonding.”

54.What does the author want to tell us most?
A.Women's brains are better organized for language and communication
B.Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.
C.Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.
D.Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.

55.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Women Are Socially Trained to Talk
B.Talking Maintains Relationships
C.Women Love to Talk
D.Men Talk Differently from Women

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua。
