The Antarctica (南极洲) is actually a desert. It is the only continent on the earth without a river or a lake.

Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some
land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants
growing on it at all?
To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold
places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts
of the e arth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry desert s everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.
Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.
Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food. What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weat her is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

七、完成表格。
阅读下面短文,根据其内容,完成表格中所缺的信息。
30 years ago, this was a small town of pleasant houses and shops. Thereweren’t many cars and we all walked to work or school, saying hello to eachother. We met in the local shops and chatted in the chemist’s, butcher’s orgreengrocer’s where we b ought local products. The
buildings were low-rise,children played in the streets and the park was full of flowers. Those dayswere peaceful and we thought we were lucky to live here.
Since then, there have been big changes. New factories have opened andmanual workers have e to the town to get employment in them. Newapartment blocks have been built for them and this is now a high-rise town.Fewer people go to the small shops; they prefer the larger and cheapersupermarkets. There are cars everywhere, parked or moving. People no longerhave time to say “Good morning”to their neighbours. Our peaceful, quiettown has bee a noisy place with a huge population.
Now it is the right time for us to try to improve our town. It has grown veryfast and it is not as attractive as it was. Let us work together to make it abetter place. Let us have no more high-rise buildings. Let us spend moremoney on the park so that it is once again a lovely place to walk in. Let usmake our streets cleaner. Let us make car drivers obey the law so thatwe are safer. When a new building is planned, let us take care of its architecture.
In addition to these ideas, this paper believes that we should all try to improveour attitude to people in our neighbourhood. Most people are not interestedin their neighbours. They do not speak to them or help them. 30 years agoif someone was ill, people visited them. Now, we do not smile when we passour neighbours in the street. Small towns and big towns are different, butwe can try to make our big town a friendly town.
Let us all work hard to make this town our real hometown, a munity of friends.
