Can one person make a difference? Just ask Greg Mortenson—former mountaineer, nurse, doctor, co-founder of Central Asia Institute, humanitarian (人道主义者) and author of The New York Times’ bestseller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace.
Mortenson was born in Minnesota in 1957. He grew up in a village near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania where his father co-founded a local hospital and his mother founded the International School Moshi. Mortenson carried on his parents’ professions and worked as a nurse and then as co-founder and executive director of the Central Asia Institute.
Mortenson’s change from nursing to building schools began in 1993 during a journey to Pakistan to climb K2, the world’s second highest mountain in the Karakoram Range. Mor tenson was climbing the mountain in honor of his sister, Christa, who died in 1992.
On his way back from the climb, Mortenson took a wrong turn and ended up in the remote village of Korphe. The villagers took good care of him until he recovered completely. Before leaving, Mortenson promised the villagers that he would build a school for their children.
When Mortenson returned to the US, he co-founded the Central Asia Institute with Dr. Jean Hoerni. In his role as executive director of the CAI, Mortenson has now built over 130 schools and brought education to over 58,000 children in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In 2009, Mortenson received Pakistan’s highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan (“Star of Pakistan”), for his devotion and humanitarian effort to promote e ducation and literacy (读写能力) in rural areas for 15 years.

People in Hong Kong speak a rich mixture of languages. English was the only official language until 1994. Most people in Hong Kong today speak Cantonese, but Mandarin and other dialects (方言) are also heard, and English as the British used is still widely spoken and taught here. Now however, many people are choosing to learn English which is spoken in the United States.
Victor Chan, for example, has children who attend school called Nature EQ on Saturday and Sunday, and they are learning to say words in American way. Mr. Chan says he wants his sons to learn American English because he plans to send them to the United States for further study.
Nature EQ is one of a growing number of schools in Hong Kong that offer American English classes. Frankie Ng opened the school 17 years ago. At that time, he had only 40 students. Today, the school has 350 students and does not have space for any more.
Mr. Ng says American English is clear and is easy to teach and easily understood. That is not the main concern of the children. Student Sam Yu has another reason for studying American
English. Sam Yu said, “I think American English is getting more and more important, and it may take over British English, so I’m willing to learn it.” Public schools here still teach mostly British English. But the number of private language schools teaching American English is growing.
Some observers say American English is becoming the language of international business. Increased contact with American culture, like movies, television programs, computer games and the Internet is spreading American expressions and accents in different areas.
28. Why does Victor Chan want his sons to learn American English?
A. Because American English is getting more and more popular in the world.
B. Because he wants to move his family to the US.
C. Because he would like to send his sons to study in the US.
D. Because he wants his sons to find jobs in the US.
29. What can we know about Nature EQ?
A. It’s getting more and more popular.
B. It offers different kinds of classes.
C. It was set up by a rich American.
D. It is a very famous high school in Hong Kong.
30. The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to .
A. British English
B. American English
C. Nature EQ
D. Hong Kong
31. Observers hold the idea that American English .
A. has already taken the place of British English
B. sounds much more beautiful than British English
C. sounds much clearer than British English
D. is playing a more important role than British English
D
On Thanksgiving, even the most thoughtful children may not offer much gratitude (感激) for the gifts they received. And you’d be wise not to expect it. Encouraging children to write down events that made them grateful can begin a habit that lasts a lifetime. But gratitude for the endless stuff we buy them? All the research I’ve done has convinced me that it’s not going to happen.
In one study, Yale’s professor Yarrow Dunham found that 4- to 8-year-old kids responded differently when given a gift they thought they earned versus (与……相对) one that was granted out of simple generosity. He calle d the earned gift an “exchange relationship”. The children were
happy for the gift but didn’t experience the deeper gratitude that might also make them more generous to others. The gift given for no reason, however, had a different emotional impact and the children showed thanks by being more likely to share candies they received in a follow-up game.
As parents, we don’t consider our holiday gifts an “exchange relationship” since we know the time, money, and effort we put into buying them. But kids have a different view. One mom said that when she asked her 16-year-old son to thank her for buying him a cellphone, he said, “But that’s what moms do, isn’t it?” He wasn’t being rude — just practical.
Asking our children to be grateful for gifts is sending the wrong message, anyway. Cornell psychology professor Tom Gilovich found that people are more likely to be grateful for experiences than for material possessions. The things that really matter aren’t on sale at a department store. A family dinner, a songfest around the fireplace, or even a hike in the woods creates a spirit of gratitude that outlasts even the nicest computer game.
32. Children may not offer much gratitude for the gifts they received, which the author thinks
is .
A. confusing
B. badly-behaved
C. annoying
D. unsurprising
33. Which of the following can earn you a kid’s gratitude to a greater degree?
A. Expensive gifts.
B. Simple generosity.
C. Birthday presents.
D. Exchange relationship.
34. The 16-year-old boy didn’t thank his mom for the cellphone because .
A. his mom put little love into buying it
B. he had been spoiled by his loving parents
C. he thought it is a mom’s duty to do that
D. his mom failed to consider it an “exchange relationship”
35. According to Gilovich, gratitude can be better aroused by .
A. pleasant emotional experiences
B. the best games
C. proper text messages
D. a good family environment

For a teacher, the first and most basic duty is to see the beauty that exists within every student. Every child is precious. 36 It is an outgrowth of students feeling loved and respected.
Love your students.
Your students know how you feel about them. If you don’t like them or if you see them as a problem, they know it. 37 And then your students will be angry with you, for you fail to see the beauty that exists within them. Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said and people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Tell your students who you are and why you are there.
38 To build that trust, tell your students who you are and why you chose to be a teacher. Tell them about your background, what you did when you were their age and why you want to be their teacher. The more your students know about you and your intentions, the more they will trust you to lead them.
Have a plan.
39 You need to begin each day with clarity about what students should know and be able to learn at the end of the class period. And every second of your day should be purposely moving you toward that end.

Establishing the proper environment for cooperative learning is very important. It will be ideal for you to encourage the students to construct their own classroom management contract. They will feel more responsible for their actions and have a positive attitude towards their classmates and teachers.

B. Your lesson plans need to be clear.
C. Even if you don’t say it, they will know it.
D. Students will learn important life skills by working together.
E. When you start from this point, classroom management comes more easily.
F. If you just focus on major misbehavior, students will get the sense that minor misbehavior is OK.
G. A classroom where each student deeply trusts the teacher has the potential to be a great
environment for learning.

Dear editor,
In my opinions, I think it is good to send teenagers to abroad for further study. Comparing with China’s education, foreign education has much advantages. It pays specially attention to the training of students’ practical abilities. Beside, it creates a relaxing atmosphere for teenagers, and therefore they can learn from more and better. In foreign countries, teenagers had more chances to learn about foreign cultures, customs and habits, that can broaden their horizons. Though they have to look after themselves and maybe life is hard for them, it will help them train our abilities to live independently and deal problems by themselves.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Dear Wang Lin,
I learn from your letter that you are annoyed that you are not permitted to watch TV at the weekend. I fully understand how you are feeling now.
I know you enjoy watching TV very much, especially those TV series. Besides, it is really boring to do our homework all day without any relaxation. However, as students, we have so much homework to do. If we spend too much time on TV, there will be little time left for our studies. That is why our parents expect us to focus on our lessons. I hope you will have a heart-to-heart talk with your parents, which can help you understand each other better. Maybe they will allow you to watch an English movie every weekend.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
