阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me.
I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out of the door. The words come out in the same tone(腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.
Sometimes it shows the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”
The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.
21. How does the author understand Maxie’s words?
A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.
B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day.
C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.
D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security.
22. What can be learned about the salesgirl in Paragraph 2?
A. She is rude.
B. She is bored.
C. She cares about the author.
D. She says the words as required.
23. What is the best title the passage?
A. Have a Nice Day —a Social Custom
B. Have a Nice Day —a Pleasant Gesture
C. Have a Nice Day —a Heart-warming Greeting
D. Have a Nice Day —a Polite Ending of a Conversation
B
Ryan Hreljac is a boy living in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador. He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
Ryan’s efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario.
When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking bad water, his teacher said.
So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $ 2, 000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief(CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life.
After the first well, "the ripple(涟漪)effect took over," Ryan says, "and one goal led to another." With adult help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $ 1.5 million and built 255 wells that serve more than 427, 000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn't bragging(炫耀). "The most impressive people I’ve met are the other kids who want to help too," he says. "I'm just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. Everybody can do something."
24. What problem is Ryan working to solve?
A. The effect of poverty on children.
B. The diseases caused by polluted water.
C. A lack of safe drinking water.
D. A lack of money to save water.
25. How did Ryan earn money for his first well?
A. He created an educational foundation.
B. He traveled to villages across the world.
C. He started a website to ask for donations.
D. He did chores and sold his idea.
26.To make a dream come true, what would be the most important for Ryan?
A. Making friends.
B. Not giving up.
C. Knowing his limits.
D. Not bragging about awards.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. An Organization of Saving Water
B. A Story of a Well
C. A Boy Who Makes a Difference
D. A Well That Brought People Together
C
Children who drink sugary drinks are not necessarily switching away from milk, according to a new study whose results disagree with earlier evidence that sodas(碳酸饮料) and other sweetened drinks are replacing more nutritious ones in children’s diets.
Instead, based on a survey of more than 7,000 middle-schoolers, researchers found that some
children may drink less milk as they grow older, but their consumption(消费;消耗) of soda and other sweetened drinks remains fairly steady. Their sugary drink intake did not appear to be rising to replace milk.
“The findings were kind of surprising,”said Solveig Cunningham, one of the study’s authors.
On the one hand, it’s good news that children aren’t giving up milk for less healthy drinks. But on the other hand, Sara Bleich, an assistant professor, said, “It suggests to me that drinking calories(卡路里) in liquid form doesn’t fill you up and that they are just adding those calories.”Cunningham and her colleagues looked to a large survey of nearly 7,500 school children who were followed between 2004 and 2007 to see whether that was the case. In the fifth and eighth grades, the children were surveyed about what they typically drank and how much.
They found that children did drink less milk as they got older. For instance, about 53 percent of fifth graders drank milk daily, compared to 46 percent of eighth graders, while the percentage of children who drank sweetened drinks daily in fifth and eighth grades held steady, at around 27 to 29 percent.
The researchers found that the change in how much milk children drank was unrelated to the change in how many sweetened drinks they consumed.
Cunningham said the study was large and nationally representative, but one of the elements missing in the study is how much water the children drank. “Kids are taking in a lot of calories in liquid form,”said Cunningham. “We should get kids to drink fewer calories from any sort of liquid, so we should get them to drink more water.”
28. According to the results of the new study, _____________.
A. sugary drinks are replacing more milk in children’s diets
B. the consumption of sugary drinks is linked to children’s age
C. the consumption of sugary drinks does not affect that of milk
D. children are more likely to drink more milk than sugary drinks
29. What can we learn about the survey from the text?
A. The survey was carried out for about three years.
B. Over 7,500 high school students took part in the survey.
C. Half of the children surveyed consume sugary drinks regularly.
D. The higher children’s grade, the higher their consumption of milk.
30. Which was NOT mentioned in the study?
A. What the children mainly drank.
B. How much water the children drank.
C. How often the children drank milk and sugary drinks.
D. How much milk and sugary drinks the children drank
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The best drink adding fewer calories to children.
B. Ways to balance the consumption of milk and sugary drinks.
C. The different effects of consuming milk and sugary drinks on children.
D. The relationship between the consumption of milk and that of sugary drinks.
D
During the ongoing battle against the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP)(新型冠状肺炎), you may have read news that garlic(大蒜)can quickly kill the virus but it proved to be misinformation. While the nation continues to fight against the NCP, it's also stepping up efforts to fight the spread of misinformation.
In the Internet era(时代), the nature of how information spreads has changed largely. Information and misinformation can spread to thousands of people in seconds.
For most people, fact-checking is an afterthought-if it is a thought at all. Therefore, misinformation spreads, said The Washington Post. People simply prefer passing on information that will lead to an emotional response from readers. Whether or not it is factual is not always important.
Misinformation could be a greater danger than the virus itself. Misinformation is "making the work of our heroic workers even harder", World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros told China Daily. He said misinformation "causes confusion and spreads fear".
During the fight against the NCP, Ghebreyesus said that "at the WHO we’re not just fighting against the virus, we're also battling…conspiracy(阴谋)theories that undermine our response."
It is true that as China races to contain the NCP and minimize(减少到最低限度)its spread across countries. fears and rumors(谣言)surrounding the virus are creating their own problems on social media. "Ironically(讽刺地), speed is important on those things." US professor Gabriel Kahn told T he Los Angeles Times. "But…those are the ones you have to be most certain about verifying(验证)before you share."
As ordinary people, we may not be able to devote ourselves like those medical staff. But we could think twice about what we read. If you can be careful about sharing information, it’s your contribution to the fight against the outbreak.
32. According to the article, what is the main cause of the spread of misinformation?
A. The lack of fact-checking.
B. An increase in viruses.
C. People’s desire to trick others.
D. Changes in the way people view information·
33. What does the underlined word "undermine" in Para. 5 probably mean?
A. Test.
B. Harm.
C. Guide.
D. Explain.
34. What problem has been found during the battle against the NCP?
A. People have fears caused by misinformation.
B. It is hard to deal with misinformation across countries.
C. Rumors about the virus travel too fast to be controlled.
D. Social media creates problems for people to verify misinformation.
35. What is the author's purpose in writing the article?
A. To share tips on how to fight against misinformation.
B. To introduce some misinformation about the NCP.
C. To call on people to watch out for misinformation.
D. To tell people what China has done to deal with misinformation.

Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. 36 You can also build your confidence by following some suggestions from doctors and psychologists.
37 What you have to say is just as important as what other people say. And don’t turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.
Prepare yourself for being with others in groups. 38 Then make a list of ideas, experiences, and skills you would like to share with other people. Think about what you would like to say in advance. Then say it.
If you start feeling nervous in a group, take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people. Remember, you are not alone. 39

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
It’s not all that hard to build 56 advanced and large vocabulary. Like many things in life, it’s an ongoing process, and the best part of the process is that there’s enough room for improvement, 57 means you’ll just keep getting better and better. Of course, you have to work at it. You wouldn’t think that a few 58 (month) of exercise in your teens would be enough 59 the rest of your life, and that’s also true for building your vocabulary —you have to keep at it daily, and pretty soon you will find that you have an excellent vocabulary.
One of the 60 (effect) ways to build vocabulary is to read good books. You need
to 61 (real) read at least one good book a week, preferably a classic. This isn’t as hard as it 62 (sound), and it is far better than any other method because you improve your vocabulary while 63 (read) an interesting piece of literature. Another nice thing is that you learn both new words and 64 (they) use unconsciously, meaning that you will tend to use the words 65 (learn) this way in conversations almost automatically.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into a new neighborhood, I couldn't imagine who it would be. When I opened the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothes and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
"Can I help you?" I asked.
"Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?" he said, his blue eyes full of hope.
"Are they from your garden?" I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
"Yes," his voice was soft. "And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?"
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of quite a bit of money. With a sigh(叹息)I said, "Please step inside and I'll get my money."
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. "Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?" Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several bruised(擦伤的)apples. "From my tree," he said, removing a worn cap. "You might like to make apple pie."
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was clear that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. "What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?"
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company(陪伴)had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him.
