第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)When you search Google or use Amazon, you might assume the results you see are the same as those viewed by your friends, family and other Internet users. But you’d be wrong. Websites and social networks track your location and search history and make assumptions about your age, race, sex and political views. They then show ads they believe to be the most relevant, in order to maximize clicks, but personalize which results you see by eliminating what they think is irrelevant.
This is sold to the public as positive, making each web session relevant and interesting, yet it is leading researchers to fear this could widen divides between the North and South, rich and poor, and young and old. For example, in terms of wealth, if users are only ever shown particular products and job advertisements based on how much they earn or where they live, these users will never be given the opportunities to increase their wealth, or how much they spend on items.
Princeton University has created bots(自动程序), each with their own fake profiles. These bots have different fake ages and sexes, earn different levels of money, are virtually(虚拟地) based in various locations around the world and have different interests. By using these bots to scan and research the web, the researchers hope to create a picture of not only what each of them sees, but also what sites they are missing out on.
According to lead researcher, Arvind Narayanan, “Our goal is a web privacy census(普查)which will be a comprehensive map of who are collecting what information, what they are inferring from it, and who they are sharing it with. It is an important step in our final goal of figuring out how users are treated based on that information.”
Personalization also has its benefits. Shopping sites such as Amazon and eBay can
scan a user’s search and purchase history to offer suggestions. This can help find similar, cheaper items or items that are more suited to their needs at a glance. It’s also possible
to disable personalized ads and results. Google’s search engine le ts you switch off personalization, for example.
Researchers from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and Yahoo felt the issue was so potentially damaging, and they have also created a way to “burst the
filter(过滤) bubble”. They believe that just becau se people have opposing views on certain topics it doesn’t mean they won’t share interests with others.
1、The underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_______”. A.decorating B.removing
C.personalizing D.protecting
2、Princeton University created bots to ______.
A.explain why different websites are personalized
B.offer users some advice on how to protect privacy
C.assess how personalization is affecting Internet users
D.stress the advantages and disadvantages of personalization of websites
3、Which of the following websites have done something to cut off personalization? A.Google and Y ahoo. B.eBay and Google.
C.Amazon and eBay. D.Amazon and Yahoo.
4、What is this passage mainly about?
A.Different websites are doing something to offer quality service.
B.Personalized ads and search results could be creating different web pages. C.Personalization of different sites will lead to users’ privacy being violated. D.Personalization of shopping sites makes online shopping more convenient.

A decent sized home can cost around $139000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United States.

23.(8分)Emilia Dobek traces her interest in space and the universe back to third grade when she and her father watched a blood moon---a total lunar eclipse (月蚀)---on the roof of their house.
Now a seventh-grader at East Prairie Elementary School, Dobek recently won the national Discovery Education Lockheed-Martin Beyond Challenge by designing a space
station for travelling to Mars.
She says that night watching the lunar eclipse started a strong desire in her that has yet to run out of fuel. So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.
“I knew she would love the challenge and that she would go way beyond in her search,” Smeeton said. “She immediately started researching bone density (密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars.”
“My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts but also make sure their comfort is out of this world,” Dobek says.
Dobek’s design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or Self-Crowing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars.
Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek’s design.
A simulation (模拟装置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual (虚拟的) reality environment. Rooms have circular ceilings so astronauts will be able to watch downloaded shows and even see places on Earth, such as their homes.

24.(8分) A trip across the Pacific will guarantee you a different experience with a tipping(给小费) culture you’ve never come across in China.
In the US,giving a little extra money to service workers on top of your bill is a common practice.
Though US national law requires that businesses pay workers at least $7.25 (45 yuan) per hour, employees receiving tips—often waiters and waitresses—are the exceptions. They usually only receive at least $2.13 an hour, and tips make up the difference. As The Wall Street Journal put it:“The American system of tipping holds the promise of great rewards for waiting staff.”
So how should you tip if you are in the US?
Normally you pay tips as a percentage of the bill.Offering an extra 15 percent of the bill to the waiter or waitress in a restaurant and to the delivery man or woman is customary and expected. You can offer more for great service and less for poor service.
Yet there is an exception. For take-out food, you don’t have to provide tips, though some people say that filling an order still requires work and time that deserve a little extra—but maybe a little less.
Tips are not expected at fast food restaurants, pizza parlors, cafés or ice cream shops either, though a tip jar might be right by the cash register (收银机).Don’t feel obligated to throw some money in,but als o remember that it doesn’t hurt. Those workers do not rely on tips.
Other service workers also receive tips. For taxi drivers,15 percent is the norm (标准),more if they help with your bags.Hairdressers often receive about 15 percent of the bill. The same goes for spa therapists(理疗师) and tour guides.
Today, you can even pay tips on a credit card. When receiving a copy of the bill to sign, you are free to fill in how much you’d like to tip.
Though thinking about when to tip and how much you should tip causes a big
he adache for many Chinese people,it’s important to bear in mind that as long as you show respect and use your reasoning, things will be just fine.
1、What is the article mainly about?
A.How tipping culture started in the US.
B.How to give tips properly in the US.
C.New ways to give tips in the US.
D.The different attitudes that Chinese people and Americans have toward tipping.
2、Which of the following is said to be against the norm of tipping in the US? A.Paying waiters and waitresses less than $7.25 per hour.
B.Ignoring the tip jar at fast food restaurants, cafés,or ice cream shops.
C.Tipping taxi drivers less than 15% because of poor service.
D.Refusing to give tips to your tour guide.
3、The underlined word “obligated” in Paragraph 7 probably means . A.being forced to do something B.being grateful for something C.being surprised at something D.being embarrassed about something
4、According to the author,Chinese consumers .
A.don’t necessarily have to follow the tipping rules in the US
B.should use their credit cards to give tips
C.must argue about the amount of tip they have to pay
D.should take it easy and give the correct tips for different occasions
25.(10分)Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A previous research found positive results on the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up to language courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out aimed to find out if users can actually learn a language with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special model where some content is available for free while some content is not. We find that its users are an even mix of men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level as there is a decrease in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest, or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users tend to use it less often but for longer periods of time than male users.
Getting any feedback on Busuu depends on whether your answer is correct or not. While it is helpful, this is not the sort of feedback language teachers prefer, as it does not
explain why the answer is right or wrong. In spite of this, feedback in the app is very highly rated.
More than 92% of respondents state that the app has met their expectations and 86% rate the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the users, and this can address the performance anxiety that many learners suffer from when asked to speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
1、The results of the former research weren’t always dependable because _________. A.it was only carried out before class
B.it didn’t consider users in class
C.it just focused on positive results
D.it used out-of-date methods
2、What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?
A.All the contents are free to use.
B.Most users consider it satisfying.
C.It’s used by more advanced learners.
D.It’s more popular with female learners.
3、Which of the following can probably replace the underlined word “address”? A.deal with B.write down
C.turn to D.speak of
4、What is the main idea of the text?
A.Students won’t suffer anxiety in learning languages by using Busuu.
B.Language learning apps are effective and satisfactory to language learners. C.Language learning apps are very popular with most language teachers. D.Students should be required to use apps for homework after class.
