It’s the time of year when we start hiking. As you pack, remember to bring your smartphone. Whether you’re going on a short walk or a long trip, there are a handful of apps that can help.
MapMyHike
This app tracks where you're hiking so you have a mapof your route at the end of the hike. It can also track other fitness information like the distance traveled, speed, pace, and even calories burned. You can save the data for your hike, so you can always access the route you look as well as track improvements to your workout. GaiaGPS
You don't always have cellphone service when hiking, but you always want to know where you are. The GaiaGPS app provides that information. Download maps of different parts of the world, and access the GaiaGPS app in the middle of even the most remote trails. The GPS function makes using the maps simple, and the app will also point to areas of interest.
Backpacking Checklist
One of the worst things is being way out on a trail only to discover you left behind something important. That's why checklists are the best. This checklist app helps you build a customized(定制的) list of things to take with you. Organize different lists based on trail lengths or requirements. Track all your essential items by weight and where you can find them.
WildObs
Using WildObs, you can record your observations of plants and animals and add them to the database. You can ask the community to help you identify something and keep track of everything you've met, and most importantly, you can become a citizen scientist. As every mobile-phone owner knows, after a year or so the battery starts to fade and the beast needs recharging more frequently. That is troublesome, but a phone’s batteries can be replaced fairly cheaply — or the whole device traded in for the latest model. An electric car, though, is a much bigger investment. And batteries are its priciest component, representing around 30% of an average mid-size vehicle.
To provide buyers with some peace of mind, carmakers guarantee their batteries, typically for eight years or around 200,000km. Producers, planning to go much further than that, though, are racing to launch “million mile”
(1.6m kilometers) batteries. Contemporary Amperex Technology, a giant Chinese firm which produces batteries for
a number of carmakers, was said to be ready to start producing batteries which would last for 16 years or 2m kilometres. Elon Musk has suggested that Tesla,a Californian maker of electric vehicles, has a million-mile battery in the works. And over in Detroit,General Motors is in the final stages of developing an advanced battery which it says has similar longevity (寿命)。
Regular fast-charging reduces battery life, as do overcharging and deep discharging. Driving in extremely hot or cold weather does not help either. And battery life will diminish even if you just leave the car in the garage. The real point of a million-mile battery is that the technological advances required to make it possible will deal with these things as well.
Battery technology is improving all the time, and by no means are million-mile batteries the limit of engineers’ ambition. The next objective is to replace Li-ions’ liquid electrolytes (电解质) with solid ones. That would allow even longer driving ranges, which could make a two-million-mile battery an achievable objective. If that day comes, the tables would have been turned. From being the first part of a car to fail, its battery will have become the last.
4. The battery problem of mobile phones is mentioned to_____.
A. show electrical devices may have drawbacks
B. stress the disturbing battery problem of cars
C. call for investment in battery development
D. compare the function of battery in devices
5. What do we know about the million-mile battery plan?
A. It is eagerly anticipated by car consumers.
B. It is aimed to save repair cost for customers.
C. It targets the longevity of 8 years and above.
D. It has drawn the interest of many enterprises.
6. What does the author think is the focus of developing the million-mile battery?
A. Exploring new materials to construct batteries.
B. Guiding users on how to maintain the battery.
C. Addressing factors that decrease battery life.
D. Researching the principle of battering aging.
7. What does the author think of the future of car batteries?
A. Promising.
B. Unpredictable.
C. Concerning.
D. Unlimited.

How much do consumers care about the carbon footprint of the products they buy? Would they care more if the goods were labeled with emissions(排放物)data?Does it matter at which stage in the lifecycle of a product the carbon is emitted? Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Policy and Decision Making offers a way to find out.
Study participants view a carbon footprint label as similar to labels that have appeared on some existing products. The label shows the carbon dioxide emissions connected with their production, transportation, usage and disposal(清理), thus showing the buyer the likely effect on climate change of buying a particular product. In the first group of studies, the research team proved that carbon emissions and a carbon emissions label would indeed play a role in consumer product decisions, although not as great a role as price. In a second set of studies, the team found that emissions connected with usage were most important to consumers followed by the transportation and disposal stages. The carbon footprint of the producing process was considered less important to consumers than the other stages in the product's lifecycle because it is outside the consumer's control. That is, the participants felt they were less responsible for carbon emitted during producing process.Consumers value
recycling a product, but the researchers found that, overall, the consumers would preferproducers to offset(补偿)carbon emissions rather than having toaddressthe problem directly themselves.
Consumers are increasingly concerned with climate change problems, and already carbon labeling is appearing on some products."We find that participantsnot only take the carbon label into account when making product decisions, but they want detailed information on the label," the researchers explain. They suggest that companies should prepare for how carbon emissions labels might affect future consumer choice.
12. Which of the following most affects consumer's choice?
A. Labels.
B. Price.
C Packaging. D. Carbon footprint.
13. About the carbon dioxide emissions in the product's lifecycle, which stage do consumers care most?
A. Usage stage.
B. Transportation stage.
C. Disposal stage.
D. Producing stage.
14. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "address"?
A. Look into.
B. Point out.
C. Deal with.
D. Run into.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Companies should take carbonemissions more seriously.
B. All products have been labeled with carbon emissions data.
C. Producers will attach less importance to carbon emissions labels.
D. Products labeled with carbon emissions data will have poor sales.

In the summer of 2002, Linda was about to enter sixth grade after having recently moved. Being new to town, her mother decided to sign her up for Girl Scouts(女童子军). The benefits of the Girl Scouts were well-known:developing leadership skills, creating a strong sense of self, encouraging healthy relationships among others. One of the most important parts of the program involved developing healthy relationships, often leading to unbreakable bonds, sometimes through the Buddy(伙伴) Program.
Soon Linda joined Pisgah Girl Scout Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, where she was paired with a buddy named Rose in a four-person tent. At camp, Linda and Rose's lives were closely connected together. As a Girl Scout, Linda was taught to have someone to rely on, to know where she is going, to talk over things, and to make friends. Little
did she know how important that single skill would be in her life.
One afternoon, a storm blew in and sent the girls all to their tents. Lightning(闪电) struck a tree outside the girls' tent. As bad luck would have it, Linda had been standing on her metal bed at the time. Lightning traveled from the metal clothesline between that tree and another one-burning all the bathing suits-went down into the tree roots, which were tied up into the floorboards of the tents, and hit her bed. Very soon, two-thirds of Linda's body was burned. Linda was lying on the floor badly burned and unable to move.
The other three girls in the tent were frightened to death. They screamed and ran from the tent, not noticing what was happening to Linda, but Rose quickly realized her buddy was not among them.
