“Can we eat this one, Dad?” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We’re on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She’s pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen (致幻剂). I have a firm “tell them the truth and be as precise as possible” philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don’t think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.
Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.
Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I’ve got myself a partner for life.
It’s not all easy—but sometimes that’s the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I’ve found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll end up on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.
24. What does the father imply by saying “I’ve got myself a partner for life.”?
A. It is rewarding to learn new skills.
B. Skiing has become his lifelong hobby.
C. He will explore more with his daughter.
D. His daughter will accompany him forever.
25. Why does the father start learning to play the piano?
A. To prove it is never too old to learn.
B. To set a good example for his daughter.
C. To experience the joy of piano practice.
D. To share with his daughter musical knowledge.
26. Which of the following can best describe the father?
A. Rigid and humorous.
B. Cautious and inspiring.
C. Creative and imaginative.
D. Ambitious and patient.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Thrill of the Skill
B. Practice Makes Perfect
C. Like Father, Like Daughter
D. The Power of Knowledge

Have you ever walked through a door and thought to yourself, “What was I going to do?” If you have, you are not alone. Psychologists believe that walking through a door and entering another room creates a “mental block” in the brain. This is generally referred to as the doorway effect.
In the early years of brain research, scientists thought that human memory was like a closet, with many sections in which we could store little boxes of experiences from our lives. Boxes would remain there forever, and whenever we had to look into them, we could just go to that particular section and find that box of memory.
Beautiful as this description of human memory formation sounds, it is not true. Our brain is much more complex than that. Psychological studies suggest that our memories are episodic (情节性的) in general. If you think back on anything, you’ll probably quickly realize our memories don’t function as clear narratives. Instead, they’re more episodic and divided into parts.
A new research led by psychologist Oliver Baumann from Bond University in Australia suggests that it’s not so much the doorways that cause a memory wipe, as moving from one location to a significantly different one—it’s the abrupt change of scene that prepares our minds for something new. “A good example is moving around in a department store,” says Baumann, “Taking the elevator between floors may have no effect on our memory, but moving from the store to the parking lot might cause us to forget something that we need to buy.”
Baumann also points out that a busy and perhaps overloaded brain does seem to play some part in this phenomenon. In other words, walking through open doors is thought to reset memory to make room for a new episode.
The good news is that experiencing such forgettable episodes after entering another room does not tell you anything about your memory and intelligence. So when you enter a room and suddenly forget why you are there, you should not think that Alzheimer’s disease is creeping up on you!28. Which of the following would most probably be “doorway effect”?
A. You missed a call and forgot to ring back.
B. You read a book and forget what it is about.
C. You entered the office and forgot what to get.
D. You saw a man years ago and forget who he is now.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All memories are linked in the brain.
B. Memories are clearly separated in the brain.
C. Not all the memories can be found in the brain.
D. Memories are stored in particular sections of the brain.
30. What can we infer from Baumann’s research?
A. Taking an elevator stimulates new memory.
B. Walking through open doors results in memory loss.
C. A sudden change of the scene boosts intelligence development.
D. An overloaded brain increases the possibility of doorway effect.
31. What does the author think of “doorway effect”?
A. Insignificant.
B. Beneficial.
C. Influential.
D. Damaging.

The monarch butterfly migration (迁徙) is at risk because of climate change and other environmental factors.
Do you know that monarch butterflies can travel up to 50- 100 miles a day? If you know they need travel about two months, you’ll have an idea of the distance monarchs travel to get to Mexico.
Monarch butterflies are the only kind of butterflies to make a two-way migration. They travel to Mexico to escape the winter season in the northern climates. Cold, wet weather is considered deadly for monarchs, while hotter, diner summer change their homes in the north.

And the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacan, Mexico, lost trees at a higher rate than it did in 2019.
With climate change as the monarch butterflies’ biggest challenge, they are faced with many dangers, such as drought, deforestation and struggle to breed. Female monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed flowers, which have been heavily affected by the wild weather from spring and summer of last year. Because of this, the development of butterfly eggs was also affected.
Since 2013, Mexico has seen a rapid drop in the number of migrants arriving to the area.
