22.(8分)Google’s new artificial in telligence can defeat both humans and other AIs. Fortunately, the only war zone where it fights and wins is the ancient board game Go(围棋).
AlphaGo Zero, developed by Google—owned DeepMind, is the latest AI program. The original AlphaGo defeated Go master Lee Sedol last year, and Alphago Master, an updated version, went on to win 60 games against top human players. What’s different about AlphaGo Zero is that it became potentially the world’s best Go player with any help from humans.
The program AlphaGo Zero started off knowing only the basic rules and then played millions of games against itself in just a few days. After almost five million games played against itself, AlphaGo Zero could outplay humans and the original AlphaGo. After 40 days, it was capable of beating AlphaGo Master.
The program learned the strategies humans accumulated over thousands of years in a matter of weeks and also developed nontraditional strategies and moves that beat the techniques of the human masters, leaving them astonished. “At each stage of the game, it seems to gain a bit here and lose a bit there, but somehow it ends up slightly ahead, as if by magic,” said Andrew Jackson of the American Go Association
DeepMind says it has plans for the technology behind AlphaGo Zero beyond just defeating all over an ancient game board. “In the end, we want to apply these breakthroughs to helping solve all sorts of pressing real world problems like designing new materials,” said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, in a statement.

24.(8分)It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent net-workers and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地)motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits. Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence:they "own"
the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
The myth that shy people are less effective leaders than their outgoing fellows is just a misunderstanding. Make wise use of your personality strengths to lead your business no matter what side of the range you fall on.
1、We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ___________.
A.shy people are sensitive to rewards
B.shy people care more about content
C.outgoing people are more careful about chances
D.outgoing people consider what to learn while listening
2、The example of Johnny shows ____________.
A.shy people are likely to be modest
B.hardworking students speak little in public
C.some students keep silent on purpose at school
D.shy people may have an advantage in discussion
3、We can learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 that ____________.
A.success results from devotion B.shyness contributes to popularity
C.outside reward leads to insistence D.uncertainty counts more than certainty
4、The author supports his ideas mainly by ____________.
A.giving definitions and presenting research results
B.explaining problems and providing solutions
C.quoting authorities and making evaluations
D.making contrasts and giving examples
25.(10分)It’s official. Denma rk—as well as being the world’s best country to live in for women with the second-happiest people and one of the best healthcare systems in Europe—has the most contented babies. Or, at least,
the ones who cry the least. According to research published in the Journal of Pediatrics, Danish, German and Japanese babies cry the least, while British, Canadian and Italian babies cry the most.
“I’m not surprised,” Danish parenting expert and co-author of The Danish Way of Parenting Jessica Alexander tells me. “The first year of a child’s life is considered so important in Denmark. Danish parents are much less stressed because they get good maternity and paternity leave (孕产假). The atmosphere is much calmer and, if mothers are getting more time off, that goes hand in hand with less stress, more contact, more routines and less crying.” She pauses before throwing in a final tip: “Oh, and Danish babies sleep outdoors a lot.”
In Denmark, a woman is given four weeks pregnancy leave followed by 52 weeks of paid leave that can be shared between parents. And Alexander thinks there is another important reason why Danish babies cry less: breastfeeding. “It’s just the done thing in Denmark,” she says of a country that has the world’s highest breastfeeding rates. “In other countrie s, there are continual discussions about whether you should or shouldn’t breastfeed. In Denmark, breastfeeding has never gone out of style. And everyone does it for a year.”
For Iben Sandahl, Alexander’s co-author, it comes down to the Danish attitude to l ife in general. “We are an honest and pure people,” she tells me. “We are surrounded by social support and are less likely to become angry, sad or annoyed when our babies are crying. And we are good at embracing (拥抱) all kinds of feelings, so we aren’t sca red. Instead, we try to connect with the babies when they cry. It’s how babies communicate and it’s about trying to understand it.”
1、Which of the following can make a baby cry less?
A.An effective healthcare system.
B.More company from a parent.
C.An energetic busy mother.
D.More chances to meet fellow babies.
2、It can be learned from the text that ________.
A.something in the milk from breastfeeding can keep babies happy
B.Demark is second to none in protecting its females’ rights
C.Danish parents’ attitudes to a baby’s first year vary considerably
D.breastfeeding is a common and accepted practice in Denmark
3、When babies cry, Danish parents will probably ________.
A.try to figure out what they want
B.put them outdoors for a good sleep
C.seek social support for guidance
D.wait a moment for them to calm down

Love Tunnel sees lots of love and trash
Bearing a resemblance to the forest-surrounded “Love Tunnel” in Ukraine, the twokilometer tunnel in Jiangning district Nanjing saw a recent rise in popularity as more than 2,000 tourists paid a visit every day this summer. The high number of visitors caused traffic safety concerns and increased the workload of sanitation workers. The Nanjing government had intended to cut the trees by the end of 2014.After the Nanjing government was forced to draft plans to cut the trees due to public pressure, visitors poured into a railway section that runs through thick forest for sightseeing and to take photos this weekend, leaving the railway with overwhelming piles of trash.
However, in response to the government's plan, complaints and outcries were made by the citizens that the love tunnel should be reserved. They claim that walking along the leafy green tunnel is like entering a fairy tale, and a possible decision to tear down the trees could bring the story to a pitiful end.

25、We are often unable to pay close attention to what we hear. Just like when we try to grab a sponge(海绵) that is full of water, some water will run out of it. But sometimes we try to remember everything a speaker says and try to take in a speaker’s every word as if every word was equally important. We try to remember all the names, all the dates, and all the places. In the process we often miss the speaker’s main point.
Erik Waldman works at a design company. Knowing he had never been good at budgeting his money, he was determined to begin thinking about his economic future. When his employer circulated an e-mail announcing a financial planning workshop(研讨会), Erik signed up right away.
The first session was about retirement planning. Simone Fisher, the lecturer, explained that 7 of 10 Americans between the ages of 22 and 35 do not have a regular savings plan. Erik wrote down every number Simone mentioned. "If you want to have a retirement income equal to 75 percent of your current salary," Simone continued, "you will need to save at least of 6 percent of your present earnings, taking into account future inflation rates(通货膨胀率). In the meantime, I want to stress that the most important thing is to start saving now."
Erik recorded all the statistics Simone used. When she opened the floor(自由发言) for question, Erik raised his hand and said, "I have two question. When is the best time to start saving for retirement? And how can I figure out my savings target if I don’t kn ow what inflation rates will be in the future?"
This is a typical example of losing the speaker’s point by concentrating on details. Erik had fixed his mind on remembering all the statistics in Simone’s presentation, but he blocked out the man message. Rat her than trying to remember everything, we should concentrate on main ideas and evidence.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Nanjing government planned to cut the trees surrounding the “Love Tunnel” for the high number of visitors caused both safety concerns and pollutions, which gave rise to the objections of citizens.
I am totally in favor of the citizen's point of view that the fascinating love tunnel ought to be reserved. For one thing, it would be a great pity to put an end to the fairytale-like scenic spot, which brings peace and beauty to the visitors. For another thing, in a bid to solve the problem of safety concerns and pollutions, the authority could come up with a way to preserve the green corridor while also improving the safety of both people and trains.
Therefore, as long as the visitors and the authorities make joint efforts to preserve the love tunnel, it will surely serve as a marvelous tourist attraction for us without any concerns.。
