Ours has become a society of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e. worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working as a factory laborer, the employee of today is increasingly a
middle-class person with a formal regular education, holding a professional or management job requiring professional and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last fifty years. Middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population growing so fast that the industrial worker, the oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in importance in number.
Yet you will find little, if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of very dubious advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion(提升). You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field. Every trade requires different skills, sets different standards and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skills. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative (管理上的)work, the greater the emphasis on ability to work tithing the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge.
59. It is suggested that fifty years ago .

one .
A. to be more successful in his work
B. to be more specialized in his field
C. to solve technical problems
D. to develop his professional skills
C
The time you spend at the office may be the most stressful(紧
张的) part of your day, but it doesn’t have to be. You have a greater ability to shape your office environment than you may realize. Tale breaks throughout the day. It will help clear your mind and relieve pressure. Something as simple as going to the water cooler for a drink may do the trick.
Take part in a noontime or an after-work exercise class. This will give you a chance to relax and a way to relieve stress.
To help your workday go smoothly, try arranging your activities. Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier work later in the day, when you may be tired.
Try listening to music recordings, such as a pounding surf or songbirds, to help you relax. Such tapes are sold in many shops. Use headphones if you are listening to them in the middle of the workday. Get to work early or stay late once a week. You may be able to complete more when you change your daily work.
If your stress comes from job insecurity, take stock of yourself. Renew your knowledge, and remind yourself of your skills and strengths. Also, make sure you keep up with new developments in your fields. This will make you valuable to employers.
Don’t let rumors(谣言)at work, which are usually false, cause your worry. A co-worker may be just thinking out loud about worst-case imagined events.
If your office is less structured(or if you are the boss), consider a company mascot(吉祥物). A cat or dog can do wonders for workers’morale.
63. Which of the following can work out your stress at work?

A. The disadvantages at work
B. How to improve your work

D. The greatest problem – stress at work

Americans tend to put their own special brand on any foreign import and equestrian(马术) sports are no exception. It’s hard to imagine a horse show in Paris or Brussels, for example, opening with a parade of mule teams.
American carriage contests differ in more significant ways as well. Professional athletes dominate European shows because of the large cash prizes, but American competitions are strictly for amateurs. Veteran pleasure driver Elizabeth Cole says it gives the shows a very different atmosphere. “Granted, everybody wants to win a ribbon when different type of sport where people will help each other; if someone forgot a whip, or they forgot part of their equipment, one of the other competitors will probably come up and say, ‘well, I have an extra you can borrow.’It’s a very friendly atmosphere.”
The absence of a big prize money also tends to draw competitors of a different age. Jim Keithly, host of the Cannon Classic, says American carriage enthusiasts are generally older than those in Europe. “Our oldest competitor here, he drives two ponies, and he is 78! When people are young, they tend to go out and ride hunter-jumpers, and do a lot of activities,”said Jim Keithly. “As the body ages a little bit, that’s not as much fun as it once was, and so a lot of those folks learn to…hey, this carriage driving is kind of neat. It doesn’t hurt the body as bad as being thrown around on top of a horse.”
The horses themselves aren’t always members of distinguished breeds. At this year’s Tennessee Classic, the big winner was Linda Ward
and her pony Casper. Casper has no known bloodline and was on the verge of starving to death when Ms. Ward bought him for $100. Four years later, the pair won the most prestigious carriage competition in America. “Last year I went to Walnut Hill, Pitsford, New York,” she said. “It ’s pretty much by invitation, so you pretty much have to have won a lot, be very competitive. So I wroth them a letter and sent them a picture of my
turn-out. And so, I was invited to go up there. And we won four ribbons there.”
One thing that American and European equestrian sports do share is a respect for tradition. Show Judge Dade Bushneck inspects each them to
insure that the carriage, harness and even the driver ’s clothing are all authentic to the heyday of pleasure driving —— the late 19th
century. “We carry spares with us,” said Dede Bushneck. “In the old days, everybody did, because you would leave your farm, and maybe go I don ’t know how many miles to another farm. And if you broke down, you had to have your tools with you, so, tools to get you back on the road and home.”

A. irony

B. some elderly people can also take part in equestrian sports

69. The underlined word “heyday ” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. The golden time.
B. Days without orders.
C. Memorable moments.

B. Most of the American carriage contests athletes are amaters.
C. The carriage contests in America are especially dangerous.
D. Both Europeans and Americans enjoy carriage contests very much E
Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. If a long reading assignment is given, teachers expect students to be familiar with the information in the examination. (Courses are not designed only for students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed only for students to pass exams.) the ideal(完美的) student is considered to be one who is motivated (目标明确的)to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Grade-conscious(清醒的) students may be frustrated (受挫) with the teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short written comments but not with a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the student is responsible for learning the material assigned.
When research is assigned, the professor in the United States expects the students to take the initiative(积极性)and complete the assignment with less guidance. It is the students’ responsibility to find books, magazines, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works, but they expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to use all the reference materials in the library.
Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them. In the United States, professors have other duties teaching. Often they are responsible for management within their department. In addition(此外),they may be required to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach(接近) a professor during office hours or make an appointment.
71. The sentence “Courses are not designed merely for students to
pass exams.”, means _______.
A. teachers want students to fail exams
B. teachers care only about exam grades
C. teachers believe that passing exams is not the only purpose
of a course
D. teachers design courses for lectures only
72. Professors in the united states usually that .
A. the students to know all the answers
B. the students to take the initiative and be independent
C. the students never to ask for their advice
D. the students to work together and help each other
73. The main idea of this passage is that .
A. students should learn independently
B. students should learn under close guidance of their
professors
C. students should learn how to work together
D. students should not learn mainly for high grades
74. If a student has a problem with classroom work, he or she
should .
A. make an appointment with the professor a week before
B. approach a professor after class
C. turn to the professor for help in his office
D. go to the professor’s home
75. What is considered to be a good student?
