14、For too many people, the harm begins early in life. Four out of ten babies born in the United States do not form a strong relationship with either parent, and they will pay for that in the rest of their lives.
New research from Princeton University confirms what other researchers have already found: the number of babies who are lack of the close relationship is rather big, which prevents them having a fair chance of having a successful life. That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one third of US parents don’t know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don’t come with an owner’s guide book.
The basic problem, according to the Princeton’s study, is that 40 per cent of babies in the US live in fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness (侵犯), defiance (违抗) and hyperactivity (多动) as they grow into adults.
Of that number, 25 per cent don’t have a close relationship with their parents because the parents don’t satisfy their needs. And 15 per cent find their parents are so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.
That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult. “They can overcome(克服) it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, the leader of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It’s not a make-or-break situation, but they might find it harder to control their behaviour.”
Moullin, along with his teammates from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, studied more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.
Many reasons lead to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can deal with.
Yet strong relationships, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

When I was in primary school, I got into a big argument (争论) with a boy in my class. I forgot what the argument was about, but I will never forget the lesson I learned that day.
I thought that I was right and he was wrong, and he thought I was wrong and he was right. The teacher decided to teach us a very important lesson without criticizing (批评) both of us.
She brought us to the front of the class and asked him to stand on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her was a large, round ball. I could clearly see that it was black. She asked the boy what color the ball was. "White", he answered.
I couldn't believe it. The ball was obviously black! Another argument started between us, this time about the color of the ball.
The teacher told us to change places and then asked me what color the ball was. I answered, “White.”

17、To write a great news story , you have to make sure it is correct , relevant (相关的) and fresh..
For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.
Any mistakes that appear (出现)in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble.

A news story is not only correct ,but also relevant to its readers . People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them . That is why you care more about what happens at your school that at American schools. It is also why
newspapers in Beijing don 't talk about much news in Shanghai or Hong Kong.

Fire accidents often happen in our daily life. So, as middle school students, it is very important for us to learn what to do when a fire breaks out. Here are some tips, and please keep in mind.
Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound
tells us to leave the house at once.
Make escape plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Prepare fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them. Practice for a fire. We should do fire practice because they teach us about fire safety. Everyone should know the following fire rules: Don't open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.
Stay close to the floor! Smoke can be more dangerous than fire.
The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.
What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop! Don't run! The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, don't forget to call 119 for help.

19、When I have trouble with my best friend
There are always problems around us, even between close friends. Let me tell you something about myself. Last Sunday my best friend Lisa lost my favourite book that was a birthday present from my mother. The book is very meaningful for me. What’s more, she didn’t apologize to me about this, I felt quite sad. I love reading, because it can open up our eyes and increase our knowledge. I cherish every book of mine and they are my treasure.
So I am going to have a serious talk with Lisa in order to tell her my true feelings. I think we can buy a new one and read it together. In fact, understanding is the most important thing between friends.。
