三、阅读理解
18. 阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad (一度时髦的风尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” —and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer — which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet — adopted the title in 2008. A lovely bear —
popular in the US and the UK —that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of The Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.
Most “i” products are aimed at young people and considering the major readers of The Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, former head of the Language Center at King’s College London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated w ith portability (轻便).” Adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western world is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the ye ar was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend unavoidably disappeared.
67. People use iPlayer to _________.
A. listen to music
B. make a call
C. watch TV programs online
D. read newspapers
68. We can infer that The Independent’s “i” is aimed at _________.
A. young readers
B. old readers
C. fashionable women
D. engineers
69. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are _________.
A. portable
B. environmentally friendly
C. advanced
D. recyclable
70. The writer suggests that _________.
A. “i” products are often of high quality
B. iTeddy is a living bear
C. the letter “b” replaces the letter “i” to name the products
D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long
参考答案:
CAAD
67. C.细节理解题。

根据文章第一段中的“…which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet…”可知, iPlayer 是“网上看电视节目的播放器“,故答案为C。

68. A.细节理解题。

69. A.细节理解题。

根据文章倒数第四段第一句“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability(轻便).” 可知A项正确。

70. D.推理判断题。

根据文章最后一段可知,流行的东西会随时间消失,“i”产品也一样。

19. In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老)treated the poor message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted(精疲力竭的) runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off
Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut, butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him in the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.
Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile. “Oh that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head cutting!
It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and winning professionals do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he didn’t get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toast beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you, as traveler or diner, want to land your fist fight on their unsympathetic faces.
Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they hear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded (被轰炸的)person is sure to have .
