Whales are big, but why aren't they even bigger? A new study says the key factor is how many calories they can take in. Researchers came to this conclusion after using small boats to chase down 300 whales of various species around the world. They reached out with long poles to attach sensors (传感器) to the creatures, allowing them to record what whales were doing as they dived for food.
The study included 90 blue whales, the biggest animals ever to live. Size estimates vary, but they can grow to about 100 feet long and weigh more than 100 tons, according to the American Cetacean Society. The research also included sperm whales, the biggest whales with teeth; they can grow to about 60 feet in length.
Toothed whales hunt their prey (猎物) one at a time, seeking them out in the dark depths with a sonar-like detection. But as their body size increases, their hunting style becomes progressively less efficient — they take in fewer calories from their meals than the number they burn in each dive. That's a result of the limited availability of prey.
Blue whales grow bigger because they feed in a much different and more efficient way, the researchers reported. They open their mouths wide to take in an enormous volume of water — even bigger than their body size — as they swim along. They then close their mouths and strain the water out through a sieve-like filter (过滤器), trapping huge numbers of tiny shrimp-like creatures called krill. That "allows them to take advantage of a very large prey resource that's very rich in a small amount of time," said Jeremy Goldbogen of Stanford University, another member of the research team. "They get a huge bang for the buck."
So why aren't they even bigger than they are? Perhaps blue whales are limited by the seasonal nature of the most nutritious krill patches, which grow huge and dense in the summer," Goldbogen said. "And calculations indicate that to sustain a blue whale that's 115 feet long, you'd need a density of prey that is just not seen anywhere in the world."
8.How did researchers conduct the study?
A.By detecting whales with poles.B.By tracking whales with devices. C.By filming whales' preying on boats.D.By recording whales' sound from sensors.
9.What do we know about toothed whales?
A.They can grow to about 100 feet long.
C.They hunt less efficiently as they grow older.
D.They dive consuming more calories as they grow bigger.
10.What makes blue whales different from toothed whales in size?
A.Blue whales have big mouths.
B.Blue whales hunt in the deep sea.
C.Blue whales eat more varieties of foods.
D.Blue whales hunt for food more efficiently.
11.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Preying takes more time than before.
B.Preying becomes easier than expected.
C.Whales get a greater harvest from preying.
D.Whales consume more calories than they obtain.
Hollywood films have long since dominated the entertainment world --- from blockbusters (大片)that bring in huge ticket sales at the box office to the celebrated films that sweep the Oscars. But lately, Asian movies have shown they are, a force to be considered. Introducing fascinating themes and special effects, the Asian film industry is making its mark globally.
In 2019, Chinese sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth stood atop (在顶上)global box offices, earning more than $385 million (about 2,727 million yuan)in a week. Yet unlike such films in the West, which are often shown in the documentary format, it was shot as a "tragicomedy" that creates humor in a film about poverty, desperation and debt.
The Wandering Earth combines a sudden global crisis and a creative solution like other sci-fi films. In Hollywood movies, telling such stories often takes the perspective of individualism, which is to show human perseverance and courage from self-salvation (自我救赎).But The Wandering Earth focuses more on the collectivist perspective, that is,
self-sacrifice for achieving greater public interest and public goals.
These movies' achievements have shown that "'international audiences can actually accept things not considered as mainstream in Western culture", Cai Gongming, president of the Beijing film company Road Pictures told China Daily. "It looks as if the momentum(势头)of Asian movies will continue to expand."

Dear Jakie,
47.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard, and he was of average stature.
His eyes were what struck me the most about him, they were brown and they had a sparkle. Like an inside light that was beaming out of his eyes. His eyes, I thought, represented the man in general. People say they can tall a lot from a person’s eyes. It was certainly true in his case. He always waved at every car, he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.
Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp. He had that effect.
I’d quickly roll down my window and give him the coins. Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”
I knew what his answer was going to be every time, yet I would still ask. It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was. A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.
Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy. A feeling of worry overcame me, and for the rest of that day all I could think of was “How am I going to provide for my kids, how am I going to pay rent, what am I going to do?”
