As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we’ve yet to get around to. Yet re-readers are everywhere around us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.
New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading. Journalist Rebacca Mead, a long-time Englishwoman in New York, first came across George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17. Since then, has read it again every five years. With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated (引起共鸣) differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.
Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the “what” and the “why”. Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”
It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond of
making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a lime and place, and remind us of the kind of p erson that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived experience but also by reading experience—by the books that we’ve discovered since last reading the one in our hand.
More than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life. A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.
Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re-read more often. After all, we watch our favorite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one-time delight.
A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.

A.reading benefits people both mentally and physically
B.readers mainly focus on feelings on their first reading
C.writers inspire the same imaginations as film directors do
D.we know ourselves better through re-reading experience
38.The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.call on different understandings of old books
B.focus on the mental health benefits of reading
C.bring awareness to the significance of re-reading
D.introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books
Neuroscientists have explained the risky, aggressive or just plain confusing behavior
of teenagers as the product of a brain that is somehow compromised. Groundbreaking research in the past 10 years, however, shows that this view is wrong. The teen brain is not defective It is not a half-baked adult brain, either. It has been forged by evolution differently from that of a child or an adult.
Foremost among the teen brain’s features is its ability to change in response to the environment by modifying the communication networks that connect brain regions. It allows teenagers to make enormous strides in thinking and socialization. But the change also makes them sensitive to dangerous behavior and serious mental disorders.
The most recent studies indicate that the riskiest behavior arises from a mismatch between the maturation of networks in the limbic system (边缘系统), which drives emotions and intensifies at puberty (青春期), and the maturation of networks in the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质), which occurs later and promotes sound judgment and the control of impulses. Indeed, we now know that one’s prefrontal cortex continues to change prominently until his 20s. And yet puberty seems to be starting earlier, extending the “mismatch years”.
The plasticity of networks linking brain regions —and not the growth of those regions, as previously thought— is key to eventually behaving like an adult. Understanding that, and knowing that a widening gap between the development of emotional and judgment networks is happening in young people today, can help parents, teachers, counselors and teenagers themselves. People will better see that behavior such as risk-taking, sensation-seeking, and turning away from parents and toward peers are not signs of cognitive or emotional problems. They are a natural result of brain development, a normal part of adolescents learning how to negotiate a complex world.
The same understanding can also help adults decide when to intervene. A 15-year-old girl’s departure from her parents’ tastes in clothing, music or politics may be a source of anxiety for Mom and Dad but does not indicate mental illness. A 16-year-old boy’s tendency to skateboard without a helmet or to accept risky challenges from friends is not unimportant but is more likely a sign of short-range thinking and peer pressure than a desire to hurt himself. Other exploratory and aggressive actions might be red flags, however. Knowing more about the unique teen brain will help all of us learn how to separate unusual behavior that is
age-appropriate from that which might indicate illness. Such awareness could help society reduce the rates of teen addiction, motor vehicle accidents and depression.
39.How is Paragraph 1 mainly develop?
A.By drawing a comparison.
B.By confirming a prediction.
C.By making an assumption.
D.By correction a misunderstanding.
40.What can we know about the changeability of teen’s brains?
A.It is predictable and avoidable.
B.It is a double-edged sword.
C.It is related to their brain development in the childhood.
D.It results from serious functional disorders.
41.The limbic system and the prefrontal cortex are mentioned in paragraph 3 to ________. A.show how the mismatch between their maturation of networks happens
B.explain the relationship between early puberty and them
C.explain what leads to teens’ riskiest behavior
D.show the differences between them
42.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The important role of adults in teenagers’ development.
B.Long-term prospects for the r esearch of teenagers’ brains.
C.Possible cognitive and emotional problems of teenagers.
D.The significance of the new discovery.
America’s education system has become less a ladder of opportunity than a structure to transmit inequality from one generation to the next.
That’s why school reform is so critical. This is an issue of equality, opportunity and national conscience. It’s not just about education, but about poverty and justice.
It’s true that the main reason inner-city schools do poorly isn’t teachers’ unions, but poverty. Southern states without strong teachers’ unions have schools at least as awful as those in union states. Some Chicago teachers seem to think that they shouldn’t be held accountable until poverty is solved. There’re steps we can take that would make some difference, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is trying some of them—yet the union is resisting.
I’d be sympathetic if the union focused solely on higher compensation. Teachers need to be much better paid to attract the best college graduat es to the nation’s worst schools. But, instead, the Chicago union seems to be using its political capital primarily to protect weak
performers.
There’s solid evidence that there are huge differences in the effectiveness of teachers. The gold standard study by Harvard and Columbia University scholars found that even in
high-poverty schools, teachers consistently had a huge positive or negative impact.
Get a bottom 1% teacher, and the effect is the same as if a child misses 40% of the school year. Get a teach er from the top 20%, and it’s as if a child has gone to school for an extra month or two.
The study found that strong teachers in the fourth through eighth grades raised the skills of their students in ways that would last for decades. Just having a strong teacher for one elementary year left pupils a bit less likely to become mothers as teenagers, a bit more likely to go to college and earning more money at age 28.
How does one figure out who is a weak teacher? Yes, that’s a challenge. But researchers are improving systems to measure a teacher’s performance throughout the year, and, with three years of data, it’s usually possible to tell which teachers are failing.
Unfortunately, the union in Chicago is insisting that teachers who are laid off—often for being ineffective-should get priority in new hiring. That’s an insult to students.
Teaching is so important that it should be like other professions, with high pay and good working conditions but few job protections for bottom performers. This isn’t a battle between garment workers and greedy bosses. The central figures in the Chicago schools strike are neither strikers nor managers but 350,000 children. Protecting the union demand sacrifices those students, in effect turning a blind eye to the injustice in the education system. 43.What do we learn about America’s education system?
A.It provides a ladder of opportunity for the wealthy.
B.It contributes little to the elimination of inequality.
C.It has remained basically unchanged for generations.
D.It has brought up generations of responsible citizens.
44.What is chiefly responsible for the undesirable performance of inner-city schools? A.Unqualified teachers.
B.Lack of financial resources.
C.Unfavorable learning environment.
D.Subconscious racial discrimination.
45.What does the author think the union should do to win popular support?
A.Assist the city government in reforming schools.
B.Give constructive advice to inner-city schools.
C.Demand higher pay for teachers.
D.Help teachers improve teaching.
46.What is the finding of the gold standard study by Harvard and Columbia University scholars?
A.Many inner-city school teachers are not equal to their jobs.
B.A large proportion of inner-city children often miss classes.
C.Many students are dissatisfied with their teachers.
D.Students’ performance has a lot to do with teachers.
47.Why does the author say the Chicago unions’ demand is an insult to students?
A.It protects incompetent teachers at the expense of students.
B.It underestimates students’ ability to tel l good teachers from poor ones.
C.It makes students feel that they are discriminated against in many ways.
D.It totally ignores students; initiative in the learning process.
A new study by Lynne Vincent and Maryam Kouchaki demonstrates that believing that you are a creative person can create feelings of entitlement (权利) when you think that creativity is rare and valuable. That feeling of entitlement can be costly for you and your organization as it can cause you to be dishonest.
Many organizations now are recognizing the importance of creativity and are attempting to encourage their employees to be creative. However, there is a cost to that creativity when creativity is seen as a rare and unique attribute (属性). The findings in this study are based on several laboratory experiments, in addition to a study of employees and supervisor pairs.
While creativity is in most cases valued, such as other positive attributes, including practicality or intelligence, it may be over-valued compared to those other positive attributes because creativity is by definition (本质上) rare. That sense of rarity then creates a sense of entitlement. People see their creative efforts as special and valuable and feel that they are worthy of extra rewards for their creative efforts. That entitlement can cause them to steal in order to get the rewards.
However, it is naive to assume that employees in companies that have developed a strong
identity as creative, such as Apple, Google, and IDEO, would be necessarily more dishonest due to their creativity.
“The key to the relationship between creativity and dishonesty is the sense of rarity,” said Vincent. “When individuals identified themselves as creative and believed that creativity was rare, entitlement appeared. However, if individuals believed that creativity was common, that sense of entitlement was reduced.”
When people in the laboratory experiments believed that their creativity was rare compared to common, they were more likely to lie for money. However, when people believed that being practical was rare compared to common, the increased sense of psychological entitlement and dishonesty did not occur. The effect was seen in organizations too.
Although creativity is important in the business world, the dark side of creativity has only partly studied. However, as creativity is becoming more important for organizations, it is important for organizations to understand how to encourage creativity. Encouraging creativity in organizations is not as simple as telling employees to be creative. Defining what it means to be creative and what creativity means in that context is important. When people define creativity in terms of being rare and valuable, seeing yourself as a creative person can cause entitlement and dishonesty. However, if organizations define creativity as a common and everyday behavior or an attribute that many people can have, organizations may be able to encourage employee creativity without encouraging employee dishonesty.

72.“Please put your phone down Daddy, we haven’t finished the story!” Hearing these heartfelt words from my four-year-old daughter was an uncomfortable wake-up call. How had I let the shiny electronic box in my hand take so much of my attention that it could even interrupt a short bedtime story with my precious children?
It’s no exaggeration to suggest that our mobile devices are in danger of taking over our entire lives. Time magazine found that 68% of users take their devices to bed with them, 20% check their phones every ten minutes and one third report feeling anxious when briefly separated from their beloved gadget. According to Osterman research, 79% of respondents take their work-related device on vacation and 33% admit to hiding from family and friends in order to check Facebook and Twitter. It’s hard to deny that these are worrying trends.

e.g. Was it yesterday that he met Li Ping?
e.g. When and where was it that you were born?

二、not … until …
It is/ was not until + 被强调部分+ that + 其他部分
e.g. 普通句:He didn't go to bed until/ till his wife came back.
It was not until his wife came back that he went to bed.
3.B

A. in response to对……作出反应;B. in relation to与……有关系;C. in proportion to与……成比例;D. as opposed to与……

先行词是signs(迹象),house prices in major cities may also be set for a slide 用来解释说明sign的内容,故是同位语从句,从句中不缺少任何成份,所以用连接词that 引导该同位语从句,故选A。

7.C

A. carrot and stick软硬兼施;B. ups and downs 起起伏伏;C. from rags to riches由贫致富;D. out of the blue出其不意。

8.A

故选A。

9.D

这是一个强调句:It is/was+强调部分+that+其它,强调human errors rather than the natural disaster,故首先要用that;谓语动词部分,首先有固定短语:be to blame(应该受责备),另外,主语是human errors rather than the natural disaster(人类的错误而不是自然灾害),因为由rather than(而不是)连接的主语与前一部分一致,所以要用are,故选D。

10.C

would/could/might/should have done,从句谓语构成是had done,而本句要填的是主句部分,故选D。

14.D
