Does Fame Drive You Crazy?
Altho ugh being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s star s, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world’s attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature.
According to psychologist Christina Villareal, celebrities —famous people —worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villareal says, “they feel separated and alone.”
The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century BC, painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.
Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minute s and keep their “story” alive forever. If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.
Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
56. It can be learned from the passage that stars today _____________.
A. are often misunderstood by the public
B. spend too much on their public appearance
C. can no longer have their privacy protected
D. care little about how they have come into fame
57. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Great heroes of the past were generally admired.
B. The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.
C. Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.

58. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?
A. Availability of modern media.
B. Inadequate social recognition.
C. Lack of favorable chances.
D. Huge population of fans.

China faces $176bn bill to clean up air pollution
Cleaning up China’s air pollution will cost 1.75 trillion yuan ($176b)
between 2013 and 2017, a high-ranking environmental official has
estimated.
Wang Jinnan, deputy head of the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning, said that the investment — part of an anti-pollution "action plan" announced by China's cabinet in September —“would drive up GDP by nearly two trillion yuan ($202b) and create over two million jobs,” China’s official newswire Xinhua reported.
The total cost will be higher than the 2012 GDP of most countries, including Finland, Israel and Portugal.
“36.7 percent of the investment, or 640 billion yuan ($64.5b) should go on cleaning up industry, followed by 490 billion yuan (28.2 percent) on cleaner energy sources. Cleaning up motor vehicles will absorb 210 billion yuan,” Xinhua reported, citing (引用) Wang.
In 2013, broad areas of China recorded their highest air pollution levels in 52 years, causing widespread anger over the massive environmental disaster shaped by decades of unchecked economic growth.
While Beijing has long been known for its pea-soup air, a number of traditionally clearer cities, including Shanghai and Harbin, have registered pollution levels high enough for local authorities to ground flights, close schools and pull cars from the roads.
On Friday, Shanghai’s concentration of ai rborne PM 2.5 –particulate matter small enough to stay deep within the lungs –rose to 214 micrograms per cubic meter, three times China’s national limit. The official Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center warned children and the elderly to stay indoors.
In its five-year action plan, China's State Council promised to reduce the level of airborne particulate matter by at least 10% in major cities by 2017.
Yet many smog-related government measures, such as controlling street-side barbecues, have drawn criticism for polishing over the problem. In October, one Beijing official blamed the smog on “the traditional way of cooking Chinese dishes.”
In response, many Chinese people have taken measures into their own hands. Face masks have become a fashion statement; air purifier sales have rapidly increased. An elementary school in north China’s Shijiazhuang, one of the country’s most polluted cities, has begun teaching its students a smog-defying aerobics (健美操) routine involving acupuncture points associated with respiratory(呼吸) health. Last week, a hospital in the southwestern Chinese city Chengdu opened a “smog clinic” to treat air pollution-related diseases such as coughs and asthma; it has been treating roughly a dozen patients a day. "We should not fear smog. It's preventable and curable," says a poster hung by its entrance.
62. What is the major cause of the heavy smog in China according to the article?
A. The investment in an anti-pollution "action plan" is not enough.
B. Environmental Planning has not been carried out for decades of years.
C. The economic development has not been carefully checked in the past years.
D. The traditional way of cooking Chinese dishes has produced too much smoke.
63. To avoid the harm on their health, people suffering from the smog in China are doing the following EXCEPT _______.
A. wearing face masks and use air purifiers
B. warning children and the elderly not to go outdoors
C. opening “smog clinics” to treat air pollution-related diseases
D. criticizing many smog-related government officials
64. After reading the article, most readers may feel ___________.
A. Concerned but positive
B. Tired and indifferent (漠不关心)
C. Angry but hopeless
D. Depressed and annoyed
D
Many of us have heard stories about teachers who can “see”into a student’s future. Even if a student is not performing well, they can predict success. We are convinced that this ability, this gift, is evidence that they were “called to teach.” If the gift of sight is evidence, how greater must be the gift of touch. I have a story.
I grew up in a poor African American neighborhood in Stockton, California, that had neither sidewalks nor an elementary school. Each day, always in groups at our parents’ insistence, my friends and I would leave home early enough to walk eight blocks to school and be in our seats when the bell rang. For four blocks, we walked on dusty roads. By the fifth block, we walked on sidewalks that led to lovely homes and to Fair Oaks Elementary School. It was at Fair Oaks, in a sixth grade English class, that I met Ms. Victoria Hunter, a teacher who had a huge influence on my life. During reading periods, she would walk around the room, stop at our desks, stand over us for a second or two, and then touch us. Without saying anything to us (nothing could break the silence of reading periods), she would place two fingers lightly on our throats and hold them there for seconds. I learned many years later when I was a student at Stanford University that teachers touch the throat of students to check for sub-vocalization (默读), which slows down the reading speed. I did not know at the time why Ms. Hunter was touching our throats, but I was a serious and respectful student and so, during silent reading period, I did what Ms. Hunter told us to do. I kept my eyes on the material I was reading and waited for her to place
her fingers lightly on my throat.
One day, out of curiosity, I raised my head from my book — though not high — so that I could see Ms. Hunter, a white woman from Canada, moving up and down the rows, stopping at the desks of my classmates. I wanted to see how they reacted when she touched their throats. She walked past them. I was confused. Did she pass them by because they were model students? What did we, the students who were touched, not do right? I sat up straighter in my chair, thinking that my way of sitting might be the problem. I was confused. Several days later, I watched again, this time raising my head a little higher. Nothing changed. Ms. Hunter touched the same students. Always, she touched me.
She touched me with her hands. She also touched me with her belief in my ability to achieve. She motivated me by demanding the best from me and by letting teachers I would meet in junior high school know that I should be challenged, that I would be serious about my work. I am convinced that she touched me because she could “see”me in the future. That was true of all of us at Fair Oaks who sat still and silent as Ms. Hunter placed her fingers lightly on our throats. We left Fair Oaks as “best students,” entered John Marshall Junior High School, finished at the top of our high school class, and went on to earn graduate degrees in various subjects. Ms. Hunter saw us achieving and she touched us to make certain that we would.
I was not surprised that she came to my graduation ceremony at Edison High School in Stockton or that she talked to me about finishing college and earning a Ph. D. She expected that of me. She gave me a beautifully wrapped box. Inside was a gift, the beauty of which multiplies even as it touches me: a necklace to which I can add charms for each stage of my life.
65. According to the writer, what is a special ability many good teachers possess?
A. The ability to make all students behave well.
B. The ability to treat different students in the same way.
C. The ability to predict the near future of a poor student.
D. The ability to discover a student’s potential to succeed.
66. When she saw Ms. Hunter walk past some students without touching their throats, the writer felt _________.
A. disturbed
B. ashamed
C. puzzled
D. annoyed
67. According to the passage, how did Ms. Hunter motivate the writer?
A. By having high expectations of her.
B. By correcting the way she sat.
C. By sending her a valuable necklace.
D. By communicating with her parents often.
68. What does the writer mean by “a necklace to which I can add charms for each stage of my life” (paragraph 6)?
A. A gift which becomes more and more valuable as time goes by.
B. A gift which encourages me to do well on the journey of my life.
C. A necklace which I wear on all important occasions in my life.
D. A necklace which suits me and adds to my charm.
69. The writer’s attitude towards Ms. Hunter might be described as _________.
A. disappointed
B. grateful
C. doubtful
D. sympathetic
70. Which of the following serves as the best title for the story?
A. Ms. Hunter’s Surprise
B. Ms. Hunter’s Challenge
C. A Teacher’s Memory
D. A Teacher’s Touch

Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter disappears. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss. More than just a pause from sadness and pain, laughter gives you the courage and strength to find new sources of meaning and hope. Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh —or even simply a smile —can go a long way toward making you feel better. And laughter really is contagious (有传染的)—just hearing laughter primes your brain and readies you to smile and join in the fun.
Laughter strengthens our relationships by bringing positive feelings and building emotional connections. When we laugh with one another, a positive bond is created. This bond can help fight stress, disagreements, and disappointment.
Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting. All emotional sharing builds strong and lasting relationship bonds. Laughter unites people during difficult times.
Having more humor and play into your daily interactions can improve the quality of your love relationships— as well as your connections with co-workers, family members, and friends.
Laughter is your birthright, a natural part of life that is inborn. Little babies begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born. Even if you did not grow up in a family where laughter was a common sound, you can learn to laugh at any stage of life.
One essential characteristic that helps us laugh is not taking ourselves too seriously. We’ve all known someone who takes everything with deathly seriousness and never laughs at anything. No fun there!
The ability to laugh, play, and have fun with others not only makes life more enjoyable but also helps you solve problems, connect with others, and be more creative. People who include humor and play into their daily lives find that it renews them and all of their relationships.
Life brings challenges that can either get the best of you or become playthings for your imagination. When you “become the problem” and take yourself t oo seriously, it can be hard to think outside the box and find new solutions. But when you play with the problem, you can often transform it into an opportunity for creative learning.
