Module Aims and Outcomes Definitions: Clarification of the Terms
Aim: to give you a systematic understanding and critical awareness of contemporary ideas about how to teach and learn English as a foreign language.
Intended learning outcomes: an ability to comprehensively understand the theoretical and practical issues as they relate to English Language teaching and learning.
Definitions: Clarification of the Terms
Brown’s Definitions:
Curriculum/Syllabus: the focal concern of curriculum (commonly used in US system) and syllabus (commonly used in UK system) is linguistic and subject matter objectives, sequencing, and materials. The purpose is to meet the needs and fulfill the challenges to defined group/ class in particular context/ situation. Technique: any exercise, activities, and tasks in the classroom to meet the objective or goal of learning. (Brown 2001: 15-16)

Methodology- big concept, everything about ‘how to teach’

Approaches, Design, Procedure and Method Method- an umbrella term for interrelation of theory and practice. the specification and
Method- is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language material, no part of which contradicts, and all of which is based upon, the selected approach. A method is procedural, within one approach, there can be many methods.
Approaches, Design, Procedure and Method This reformulation is better because: Clear specified six important elements: Objectives, syllabus, the roles of learners, the roles of teacher, activities, and the roles of instruction material.

Approach-.theoretically well-informed positions assumptions, thoughts, notions, and beliefs concerning the nature of language, the nature of language learning, and the applicability of both in pedagogical setting, it does mean in classroom practice. Method-a generalized set of specification in the classroom for achieving linguistic objectives. Methods main concern is to teachers and learners roles and behaviour. Besides, the concern of method is to linguistic and subject matter objectives, sequencing, and materials.
Approach-.refers to the beliefs and theories about language, language learning and teaching that underlie a method. Design- Relates the theories of language and learning to the form and function of teaching materials and activities in the classroom. procedure-concerns the techniques and practices employed in the classroom as consequences of particular approaches and design.

Methodology- Pedagogical practices in general. All things that are engaging into ‘how to teach’ questions are methodological, whatever the considerations take into accounts.

Anthony’s ‘Approaches, Methods and Techniques’
Approach- is a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language teaching and learning. An approach is axiomatic. It describes the nature of the subject matter to be taught.
Syllabus is WHAT to teach
Approach is WHY Technique is exercise, activities and tasks in teaching

Techniques- is implementational, Байду номын сангаасhat which actually takes palace in a classroom. It is a particular trick, stratagem, or contrivance used to accomplish an immediate objective; technique must be consistent with a method and therefore in harmony with an approach as well.
