雅思英语作文 应该强制教学一门外语吗 Learning a foreign language

雅思英语作文 应该强制教学一门外语吗 Learning a foreign language

Learning a foreign language offers an insight into how people from other cultures think and see the world. The teaching of a foreign language should be compulsory at all primary schools. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.Model Answer 1:To be very honest, being a bilingual has an enormous positive impact on individual personality & confidence. As it gives you moreand more global view of different cultures, at the same time one can relate things better in various geographies. On contrary to this, learning multiple languages, may not provide the relevant cultural aspect of the nation. For instance, I had learned English as a language subject in my school, apart from my native language "Hindi". In a broader aspect, it doesn't help me understand British culture at all and their mindset for others. However, to gain the cultural aspect, one should study their history & given a chance, live in the country to undergo their society thoughtprocess & thinking for others. To support this view, one may assume that, if you learn any language different from your native one, you knowingly/unknowingly go through the history and society needs of that country to make your learning of language easy to remember. At the same time, the thought of making is mandatory for everyone to learn one additional language is certainly a curriculum based need. It will definitely boost the analytical skills of students, as they think & learn in both languages. The best part is learning any other language, which is being widely used globally by people, will help you to work & live in the most part of the world. Like, I had learned English in my school & I can work & live in the most part of the world. To conclude, knowing multiple languages is an addition to your personality & work profile, but it does not give much insight of others society and viewpoint unless one study their history or live there for some time.Model Answer 2:I believe learning of a foreign language for all students should be compulsory at all primaryschools. I would like to highlight the advantages it will have and the potential benefits it will offer if the teaching is made mandatory. In primary school students actually get the chance to learn new and variety of subjects. Primary school is the best place for a student to learn any new skill or language because their mind can be moulded easily at that time. This new language will eventually become their second natural language like other natural activities like brushing their teeth or riding a bicycle.I believe learning a foreign language offers an insight into how people from that culture think and see the world from different perspective. In India, there are around 29 states and around 42 languages are spoken by people from diversified culture and religion. English was a foreign language to Indians once but this is very commonly used nowadays. A common language could help people of India to understand the insights from different culture/ religions and express and share their own views. They later emphasised to include English in the curriculum in the primary itself. Sooner it became the most commonly spoken language in India which allcould understand and comprehend. This has immensely helped in development in India as a nation. Speaking and understanding a foreign language not only helps in exchanging thoughts and ideas without any hassle but also helps in solving problems and fight global issues with ease. Let's say China has a global problem of high population and major unemployment. The USA is facing the problem of high manufacturing cost. They need people who can work for less money in manufacturing their goods like iPhone at low rates so that the US can earn more profit. To solve this issue if people of china can negotiate and comprehend in English they havebigger chance to solve their problem of unemployment and Secure the deal compared to people who don't speak & understand English. This Thing will not only help the US to earn more profits but will also help china to increase their GDP once the US invests in China. Studying and learning something a foreign language at an earlier age is the best time to learn and retain information for a longer period of Time. Skill in a foreign language not only helps people securing better job opportunities, global exposure and getting a perspective from people across the world but also help them bridge gaps inunderstanding their problems and providing solutions and vice versa.I agree and highly recommend studying and learning a foreign language at the primary level should be mandatory for better and bright future of Children, Families, Nations and The World.。

Foreign languages should be a mandatory course in schools. In today's increasingly globalized world, the ability to communicate in multiple languages has become an essential skill. Learning a foreign language not only broadens one's cultural understanding but also provides numerous cognitive and career benefits. Therefore, schools should make foreign language instruction a mandatory part of the curriculum. One of the primary reasons why foreign languages should be mandatory is the cognitive advantages it provides. Studies have shown that learning a second language can enhance an individual's problem-solving skills, memory, and mental flexibility. When individuals learn a new language, they are essentially training their brains to think in different ways, which can lead to improved cognitive function. This enhanced cognitive ability can then be applied to other areas of learning, leading to better academic performance overall.Furthermore, learning a foreign language has been linked toimproved memory and the ability to multitask. As individuals navigate between different languages, they must constantly switch between different sets of rules and vocabulary. This mental exercise strengthens the brain's executive function, which is responsible for tasks such as planning, decision-making, and attention control. These cognitive benefits can have a significant impact on a student's academic and professional success, as they are essential skills for success in today's fast-paced and complex world. In addition to the cognitive benefits, learning a foreign language also provides cultural enrichment and understanding. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds has become increasingly important. By learning a foreign language, students gain a deeper understanding of the customs, traditions, and perspectives of other cultures. This cultural awareness can foster greater empathy, tolerance, and respect for diversity, which are essential qualities for success in the global marketplace. Moreover, the ability to speak a foreign language can also provide significant career advantages. Many employers highly value individuals who possess multilingual skills, as they can effectively communicate with a broader range of clients, customers, and colleagues. In some industries, such as international business, diplomacy, and tourism, fluency in a foreign language is often aprerequisite for employment. By making foreign language instruction mandatory, schools can better prepare students for the demands of the 21st-century job market, increasing their chances of securing fulfilling and well-paying careers. It is important to note that learning a foreign language is not just about acquiring a new set of vocabulary and grammar rules. It is a holistic process that involves understanding the cultural context, developing communication skills, and cultivating a global mindset. By making foreign language instruction mandatory, schools can ensure that all students have the opportunity to develop these essential skills, regardless of their academic or socioeconomic background.Furthermore, the benefits of learning a foreign language extend beyond the individual. When a larger portion of the population is proficient in multiple languages, it can lead to improved cross-cultural communication, enhanced international cooperation, and a more inclusive and equitable society. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to bridge linguistic and cultural divides is crucial for addressing global challenges and fostering a more peaceful and prosperous future. In conclusion, there are compelling reasons why foreign languages should be a mandatory course in schools. The cognitive benefits, cultural enrichment, and career advantages associated with multilingualism make it an essential skill for success in the 21st century. By making foreign language instruction mandatory, schools can ensure that all students have the opportunity to develop these invaluable skills, preparing them for the demands of the global marketplace and fostering a more interconnected and understanding world.。

Passage 1It is predicted that by the year 2095, half the world’s languages will no longer exist. In fact, some Americans are actually welcoming the day when English will no longer be spoken in the United States. The reasons why these people wish to see the demise (消亡) of English are many and varied. In requirements, policy or law, which restrict the rights and privileges of any non-English speaker, are unfair and degrading. Its existence forces, cultures older than America itself to be thrown aside. Many countries use a second language; they are able to train all children to have a solid grounding in that second language. In America, there is no effort to teach a second language except in a few school systems(系统) where Spanish is offered. A second language for as many children as possible should be required. The fanatical(狂热的)English purists(纯粹主义者),those who are quick to point an accusing finger at those who don’t speak what they consider “correct” English, are unbearable. The poor grammar of those with a native tongue different from English is obvious. However, the fanatical English purists can often be understood no better than someone who speaks a language only from a textbook.1. According to the passage, some Americans welcome the day when English will no longer be spoken because _______.[A] they consider it unfair for non-English speakers to learn it[B] they feel policy and law should respect the rights of all languages[C] it will mean the end of American culture[D] they think the existence of English causes conflicts(冲突)2. What can we learn from the passage about other countries?[A] They require children to learn a second language.[B] They have more languages than America does.[C] They have different policies on language learning.[D] They make efforts to preserve their own languages.3. Those criticizers of others’ English ability _______.[A] speak only textbook English[B] are too strict with themselves[C] have different native tongues[D] are less tolerant than they thinkPassage 2Bilingual education programs for non-English speakers have existed in the United States since the 19th century. The high influx of immigrants fromworldwide during the 1900s further increased the demand for programs to teach children English in American schools. The most common bilingual education program is ESL (English as a Second Language), which serves the needs of non-native English speakers in public schools. The other type, developmental bilingual education, involves the use of students’ native language to teach content subjects in addition to language skills. In the 1960s and 1970s, with the nation’s enthusiasms for total bilingualism(双语能力) and multiculturalism, the concept of equal access to education for language minority students was emphasized. Federal regulations required that students be placed into a program that was appropriate to their needs. However, in the 1980s, political attitudes towards bilingual education began to change. There was a strong belief among Americans that bilingual education programs were promoting the overuse of native languages while preventing the necessary use of English. As a result, English-only policies were adopted in many states. In 2018, bilingual education programs were revived in California and Arizona. California voters overturned an old law requiring English-only instruction. Arizona voters included a provision(规定)allowing state money to pay for students learning English and other languages. These developments indicate a more inclusive attitude towards bilingual education.4. Which is the most common type of bilingual education in US public schools?[A] ESL.[B] English language study.[C] Multicultural programs.[D] Developmental bilingual programs.5. What does the underlined phrase “this provision” refer to?[A] The concept of total bilingualism.[B] The 2018 bilingual education development.[C] The attitude towards total bilingualism.[D] The use of native languages in bilingual education.6. What can we infer from the passage about bilingual education?[A] Native languages will be used less in bilingual programs.[B] The development of multiculturalism affects it greatly.[C] There has been a controversial history behind it.[D] It will be the main focus of future education reform.Passage 3The Navajo Nation is a Native American region in the southwest part of the United States. Spanning parts of three states, including Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, it is the largest Native American reservation in the country. The Navajo language, also known as Diné Bizaad, is spoken by about 150,000 people worldwide, most of whom reside(居住)on the Navajo Nation. As the native language of the Diné people, it holds an important place in the preservation of their rich cultural heritage. In recent years, the Navajo language has faced the challenge of a gradual decline. Many young Navajos are growing up speaking English as their first language and therefore have limited exposure to Navajo. The decline in the number of fluent speakers is a concern for the Navajo Nation as it strives to keep its language from fading away.In 2009, the Navajo Nation Council announced the Navajo Language Renaissance(复兴)Act. The act aims to revitalize the Navajo language and promote its use through various programs. The Diné Bizaad Advisory Committee, for example, offers community language training and supports the development of curriculum materials. Thanks to these efforts, the Navajo language is gradually making a comeback. More Navajo children are beginning to learn it and attend bilingual schools where Navajo is the main language of instruction. The Navajo Language Renaissance Act has helped lay the foundation for the preservation of the Navajo language and culture.7. Why is the Navajo language important to the Diné people?[A] It connects them to their ancestors.[B] It represents their multicultural background.[C] It has official language status in the US.[D] It helps them communicate with other tribes.8. What do we learn about the Navajo Language Renaissance Act?[A] It aims to teach Navajo language in schools.[B] It has confronted strong opposition.[C] It was announced by the US government.[D] It has had a positive impact on the language.Passage 4The endangered language crisis is by no means limited to the United States. Around the world, there are numerous languages that are facing extinction due to various reasons. In response to this, efforts are being made to document and preserve these languages before it is too late. The Endangered Languages Project is one such effort. Launched in 2012, the project is a collaboration between Google and various linguistic organizations. Its aim is to create a database of endangered languages from around the world, offering resources and tools for researchers, students, and communities.Through the Endangered Languages Project, people can access audio recordings, texts, and other materials in endangered languages, providing a valuable resource for language preservation. Additionally, the projectencourages people to contribute their own recordings and knowledge, further enriching the database.Another initiative is the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Language Preservation(LELP). Founded in 2005, the LELP is dedicated to the documentation and revitalization of endangered languages. It works closely with native speakers, conducting fieldwork to record, describe, and analyze these languages. In New Zealand, the Māori Language Commission, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, has made si gnificant efforts in language revitalization. Various programs and campaigns have been launched to encourage the use of theMāori language in daily life, including in education, media, and government.10. What is the purpose of the Endangered Languages Project?[A] To draw attention to the crisis facing endangered languages.[B] To provide linguistic training to researchers and students.[C] To create a database of endangered languages and resources.[D] To develop new technologies for language preservation.11. Researchers have found that areas with high biodiversity are often home to diverse linguistic communities, and the loss of a language is closely related to habitat loss and decreased population sizes of local species. The study shows that languages play a vital role in the transfer of traditional knowledge about nature, including local species, habitats, and conservation practices. When a language disappears, so does the knowledge associated with it, leading to a gap in valuable ecological information. The loss of traditional knowledge can have serious consequences for biodiversity conservation efforts. Many indigenous communities have developed sustainable practices over centuries and have a deep understanding of their local ecosystems. By safeguarding indigenous languages, we can better protect and manage biodiversity. To address the issue, efforts are being made to integrate language preservation and conservation initiatives. For example, NGOs are collaborating with indigenous communities to document their languages and promote their use among younger generations. In doing so, these initiatives not only contribute to language revitalization, but also support biodiversity conservation.13. What does the study in PLOS ONE suggest about language decline?[A] It leads to a loss of cultural traditions.[B] It affects global linguistic diversity.[C] It results in habitat and species loss.[D] It is closely related to local populations.14. Why is traditional knowledge about nature important for biodiversity conservation?[A] It helps increase cultural diversity.[B] It provides ecological information.[C] It supports indigenous languages.[D] It influences conservation practices.15. How are language preservation and conservation initiatives being integrated?[A] By organizing joint conferences on the two issues.[B] By developing sustainable practices with local communities.[C] By promoting the use of indigenous languages in schools.[D] By documenting languages and supporting biodiversity conservation.第二部分:阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Linguistic Diversity: Its Importance andPreservationLanguage is the essence of human communication, a vital tool that connects us, expressing our thoughts, emotions, and culture. However, with the globalization of the world and the rise of dominant languages, many languages are面临消亡的危机, especially those spoken by minority communities. Preserving linguistic diversity is crucial for maintaining cultural richness and promoting mutual understanding among people.Firstly, linguistic diversity is a反映人类文化多样性的镜子. Each language carries unique historical, cultural, and social values that contribute to the rich tapestry of human civilization. Losing a language often means losing a significant part of a community's identity and heritage. Therefore, preserving languages is preserving the knowledge, wisdom, and stories passed down through generations.Secondly, linguistic diversity is essential forcognitive development. Children who are exposed to multiple languages often demonstrate higher cognitive flexibilityand better problem-solving skills. Multilingualism improvesbrain function, enhancing cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and executive functions. Preserving languages, therefore, plays a pivotal role in fostering cognitive growth and intellectual development. Moreover, linguistic diversity promotes cross-cultural understanding and harmonious coexistence. In a world where cultural differences often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts, knowing and respecting other languages canfoster greater tolerance and empathy. Language preservation not only preserves the cultural identity of communities but also contributes to global peace and unity. To preserve linguistic diversity, several strategies can be employed. Firstly, education systems should incorporate multilingualism, encouraging students to learn and appreciate different languages. This will foster a generation that is linguistically diverse and culturally sensitive. Secondly, communities should be encouraged to maintain and pass down their languages to younger generations. This can be achieved through language immersion programs, cultural festivals, and other community-based initiatives.Additionally, technological advancements can be leveraged to preserve languages. Digital archiving and recording techniques can be used to document languages and make them accessible to future generations. Language learning apps and online courses can also facilitate the learning and spread of languages, making them more accessible and inclusive. In conclusion, linguistic diversity is a crucial aspect of human civilization, reflecting our rich cultural heritage and promoting cognitive growth and cross-cultural understanding. Preserving languages is preserving the essence of human communication and the stories that bind us together. By fostering multilingualism, encouraging community engagement, and harnessing technological advancements, we can ensure that linguistic diversity thrives and continues to contribute to our shared human experience.**语言多样性:其重要性与保护**语言是人类交流的本质,是一种将我们联系起来的重要工具,它表达着我们的思想、情感和文化。

The Importance of Bilingual Education。

In today's globalized world, the ability to communicate effectively in more than one language has become increasingly valuable. Bilingual education, therefore, holds significant importance in preparing individuals for success in both their personal and professional lives.First and foremost, bilingual education fosterscultural appreciation and understanding. By learning a second language, individuals gain insight into the customs, traditions, and perspectives of other cultures. This not only promotes tolerance and respect but also enables individuals to engage more meaningfully with people from diverse backgrounds. In a world that is becoming moreinterconnected by the day, this cultural competence is invaluable.Furthermore, bilingual education enhances cognitive abilities. Research has shown that bilingual individuals often exhibit greater cognitive flexibility, problem-solving skills, and creativity compared to their monolingual counterparts. The constant toggling between languages strengthens the brain's executive function, leading to improved multitasking and decision-making abilities. These cognitive benefits extend beyond language learning and can positively impact various aspects of life. Moreover, bilingual education opens doors to a wealth of opportunities. In many professional fields, proficiency in more than one language is not just an asset but a requirement. Whether in business, diplomacy, academia, or tourism, individuals who are proficient in multiple languages have a competitive edge. They can communicate with a broader range of people, access a wider array of resources, and navigate diverse environments with ease. As the global economy continues to evolve, multilingualismwill undoubtedly become even more essential.Critics of bilingual education may argue that itdetracts from the mastery of one's native language. However, research suggests otherwise. Studies have found that bilingual individuals often have a deeper understanding of language structures and grammar, as they must constantly compare and contrast two linguistic systems. Additionally, bilingualism has been linked to stronger literacy skills,as individuals transfer knowledge and strategies between languages. In conclusion, bilingual education is not just about learning another language; it's about opening doors to new cultures, enhancing cognitive abilities, and seizing opportunities in an increasingly interconnected world. By investing in bilingual education, individuals can gain a competitive edge, broaden their horizons, and contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society.--。

目前有人认为不应该把英语课视为必修课你的看法英语作文

目前有人认为不应该把英语课视为必修课你的看法英语作文案例一:Should English Classes Be Compulsory for StudentsMost universities in China have made English a compulsory course, which has aroused many complaints among students. Many students wish that English could be removed from the list of compulsory courses. However, I think it is of great significance for all university students to study English. To begin with, as an international language, English is widely used. Today, university students must master the language if they are to communicate with foreigners and to participate in the fierce competition in the future. In addition, studying English as a foreign language does not only provide students with a useful tool for communication, but also open a door to cultures different from our own. As is universally acknowledged, mutual understanding among different cultures is vital for keeping the world safe and peaceful. Therefore, I strongly recommend that all students take advantage of the compulsory course, and try to study English well.案例二:Learning a foreign language offers an insight into how people from other cultures think and see the world. The teaching of a foreign language should be compulsory at all primary schools. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?Model Answer:Language is linked to the identity of a nation, and speakers of a common language share many things, but does this give governments the right to restrict the way a language is used or taught? It can be argued that a nation maintains its culture through its language, and so there is a need to restrict the use of foreign words and changes in pronunciation. However, in reality this approach is fruitless, because language is a living thing and it is impossible to stop it from changing. This policy has been tried in some countries, but it never works. People, especially young people, will use the language that they hear around them, and which separates themfrom others; stopping the use of certain words will only make them appear more attractive. As for spelling, we all know that the English system is irregular and, I believe, it would benefit from simplification so that children and other learners do not waste time learning to read and write. On the other hand, some people may feel, perhaps rightly, that it is important to keep the original spelling of words as a link with the past and this view is also held by speakers of languages which do not use the Roman alphabet. While it is important for people who speak a minority language to be able to learn and use that language, it is practical for education to be in a common language. This creates national pride and links people within the society. Realistically, schools are the best place for this to start.Ultimately, there is a role for governments to play in the area of language planning, particularly in education, but at no time should governments impose regulations which restrict people's linguistic freedom.。

不用学外语辩论英语作文In the age of globalization, the ability to communicate across cultures is invaluable. English, often referred to as a "global language," has become a bridge connecting people from different linguistic backgrounds. However, the question arises: is it necessary to learn foreign languages when proficiency in English could suffice? The argument against the need to learn foreign languages is rooted in practicality. English is the predominant language of international business, science, technology, and aviation. It is also the language of the internet, with the majority of digital content produced in English. This ubiquity suggests that learning English alone could enable individuals to navigate most global interactions successfully. Moreover, the time and effort required to learn a new language are significant. For many, this investment may not yield proportional returns, especially if their professional and personal lives are conducted primarily in English. Instead, this time could be devoted to mastering other skills that might offer immediate benefits, such as coding, data analysis, or specialized training in one's field of work. However, this perspective overlooks the deeper value of language learning. Languages are more than just tools for communication; they are windows into cultures, ways of thinking, and histories. By learning a foreign language, individuals gain insights into the nuances of another culture, which can foster empathy and understanding. This cultural competence is increasingly important in our interconnected world, where cross-cultural interactions are commonplace.Furthermore, learning a foreign language can have cognitive benefits. Studies have shown that bilingualism can improve memory, problem-solving skills, and even delay the onset of dementia. The mental exercise involved in learning and using a foreign language can enhance cognitive flexibility, allowing individuals to adapt to new situations more readily. In addition, the reliance on English alone may lead to missed opportunities. While many people around the world speak English, not everyone does, and even those who do may prefer to communicate in their native language. By learning another language, individuals can connect with a wider range of people, access literature and media in its original form, and participate in conversations that might otherwise be inaccessible. In conclusion, while English serves as a global lingua franca, the benefits of learning foreign languages extend beyond mere practicality. They enrich our understanding of the world, enhance cognitive abilities, and open doors to new experiences and opportunities. Therefore, while the mastery of English is undoubtedly valuable, it should not preclude the learning of other languages. Embracing multilingualism can lead to a more inclusive, empathetic, and intellectually stimulating life. 。

英语作文英语的滥用English is a great language, but it's often misused. People use "literally" when they really mean "figuratively," and "irregardless" when they should just say "regardless." It's frustrating to hear these mistakes over and over again.I can't stand it when people misuse "your" and"you're." It's not that hard to remember which one to use. "Your" shows possession, like "Is that your book?" and "you're" is a contraction for "you are," as in "You're going to love this movie." It's such a simple rule, but people still mess it up all the time.Another pet peeve of mine is when people say "could of" instead of "could have." It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. "Could have" is the correct way to say it, as in "I could have gone to the party if I hadn't been sick." Using "could of" just makes you sound uneducated. The misuse of "literally" drives me crazy. People useit to exaggerate all the time, saying things like "I literally died laughing." No, you didn't. If you were literally dead, you wouldn't be able to tell me about it. "Literally" means actually or exactly, so use it correctly, please.I also can't stand when people use "less" when they should use "fewer." "Less" is used for things that can't be counted, like water or sand. "Fewer" is for things that can be counted, like books or apples. It's not that difficult to remember, but people still get it wrong all the time.In conclusion, English is a wonderful language, butit's often misused. It's important to pay attention to the words we use and make sure we're using them correctly. Otherwise, we risk sounding uneducated and making embarrassing mistakes. Let's all make an effort to use English properly and preserve its beauty and precision.。

Should Bilingual Be Used In English Classroom Management【Abstract】The theme of this paper is to introduce bilingual for English classroom management, to argue its personal benefits, academic benefits, bicultural benefits, difficulties, problems from using bilingual(Chinese and English)in English classroom management, and to highlight the importance and necessity to use bilinguals in English classroom management.【Key words】bilingual Chinese English classroom management【中图分类号】G642 【文献标识码】A 【文章编号】1674-4810(2010)03-0040-02IntroductionWith the development of China, China is getting more and more opportunities for globalization and recognition of the importance in politics, economic, business and education. English language is becoming more and more necessary in our work and studying. In today’s China, many students hope they will be able to master English language as a foreign languageand become fluent bilinguals (Chinese and English)so that they have the advantages of the two languages and cultures. This gives teachers a good chance to reconsider if it is necessary for us to use bilinguals in managing the English classroom so as to meet the need of the society and help those who have beautiful dreams of bilingual to become true. The purpose of this paper is to introduce bilinguals, to discuss its personal benefits, academic benefits, bicultural benefits, difficulties, problems and using bilinguals in managing English classroom and to highlight the importance and necessity to use bilinguals in English classroom management. What is bilingual?“Bilingual is a person who knows and uses two languages”(Della, 1990: P72), and in Longman Active Study English ?C Chinese Dictionary, bilingual is defined as “in everyday use the word bilingual usually means a person who speaks, reads, or understands two languages equally well(a balanced bilingual), but a bilingual person usually has a better knowledge of one language than of the other”. “For example, he/she may:(1)Be able to read and write in only one language.(2)Use each language in different types of situation(One language at home and the other at work).(3)Use each language for differentcommunicative purposes(One language for talking about school life and the other for talking about personal feeling”(Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics). However, using bilinguals in managing English classroom in this paper is that a teacher who uses both Chinese and English languages to organize and manage English class, and teach his/her students in class.Personal benefits from using bilinguals in classroomKnowing more than one language is having expended access to people and resources. A student with two languages can read and speak more than one language, have the ability to communicate with more people, read more literatures, and benefit more fully from traveling to other countries. They “regard the mind as a storage tank and languages as taps and all the information is that words represent stored in some central tank in the mind… The tanks would reflect a situation in which the rules for using a language are indelibly stamped on the information stored, so that bilingual person has access to different information when he uses the different taps, so that if a person is bilingual he has access to the same information even though he is using two different taps? If so, one could expect a variety of types: some could be large and some small: some could release the contents of the tank as spray and someas a stream…” citing from WHAT DOSE BILINGUALISM MEAN? (Barbara, 1987: 81). From the metaphor, being bilinguals, a student would be with self-confidence and he/she would often believe himself/herself, and his/her abilities to will do many things. As a result, he/she may have a wide choice of jobs. For instance, a company would prefer to employ a person with two languages rather than a person who can not speak English and it shows that two languages are more choices. It is no wonder that “Spanish is the language of doormen, dishwashers and fruit pickers. We should be teaching English, which is the language of doctors, dentists and lawyers”(Michelle, 1995).Educational benefits from using bilinguals in classroom Using bilinguals in English classroom management may simulate the students’interests and enthusiasms in English learning and educate students to analyze problems, and cultivate their problem solving ability with English thinking habit. By my experiences, a well-developed bilingual student may creative and better at taking part in classroom activities than those who do not. As the students who have two languages tend to do better in the curriculums and bilingual students have two or more words for each object and idea and different meanings, and sometimes attached to words by thetwo languages. “That means bilingual persons may develop the ability to think more flexibly not only about words but about everything” citing from BBC Educational in Welsh (24th August, 2004).Accessing two cultures from using bilinguals in classroomOn the one hand, a bilingual student may achieve two different cultures and the ways of thinking and behaving simultaneously through compound two languages because two separate linguistic signs are associated with a same meaning. The culture of the different race may exist some alike or dislike of place. This is not different for us to detect lots of similar expressions between Chinese and English. For example, Chinese is “三思而后行”but in English is “think twice before you act”, Chinese is“同舟共济”but in English is“in the same boat”, Chinese is“披着羊皮的狼”but in English is“a wolf in a sheep’s clothing”, Chinese is“眼见为实”but in English is “to see to believe”. These cultural coincidences can promote the students to move the positive transfer to their studying target language. Furthermore different cultures and races may have their own religion and faith. Such as: “He is a professional. It means he is perhaps a boxer. She is a professional. It means she is likely a prostitute.” The two sentences sometimes may puzzle theChinese students. Kramsch points out “second and foreign language learners necessarily become learners of the second culture because a language cannot be learned without an understanding of the second cultural context in which it is used(Kramsch, 2000).Thereby, teachers should remind students to accumulate more knowledge and information about English speaking countries’ political economy, social culture, and people’s customs and habits as much as possible.Difficulties and problems from using bilinguals in classroomOn the other hand, bilinguals however do not mean an additional iron rice bowls or meal tickets. Using bilinguals in managing English classroom may have some unavoidable weakness. Some students show that bilingual development is nothing just waste their study time and cause cognitive confuses. They may meet difficulty in pronouncing a certain sound, difficulty in understanding new vocabulary. Therefore, some of them are reluctant to speak English in the class because they are afraid of stuttering or stammering. Even some adult students may think that bilingual development for them seems less important. English language in their minds is just anexamination subject. Their task and goal of study in colleges and universities are successful examination, smooth graduation, finding g a promising job and having a bright future.ConclusionTherefore, the most important thing for us English language teachers do is that we should avoid the weaknesses and take strengths from using bilinguals in English classroom, and let the use of bilinguals in the classroom and the students s’ study their subjects do not contradict to each other but let them complement each other. They can learn two languages by comparing the native language and the English language. Besides, what the teachers need to do in language classroom is creating a harmonious and a relaxed atmosphere for studentsto study. More encouragements and less discouragement for students overcome the difficulties in their study. To conclude, every coin has its two sides just as using bilinguals in English classroom may have its positive sides and negative sides but its advantages will overweigh its disadvantages if it is operates properly and if our teachers and students realize its importance, the dream of using bilinguals in English classroom will become true.Reference[1]Kramsch, C.(2000).
