If you want a little extra security against thieves stealing your bicycle, designer Dennis Siegel has designed a solution. The RFID Bikealarm is attached to the seat on a bicycle and gives off an alarm when it senses movement.“The RFID Bikealarm is meant to be a useful add-on to mechanical bicycle locks because it greatly extends the range of protection with only a few components, ” Siegel explains on his website. “It is low-cost, durable and easy to use. ”The Bikealarm was de signed as part of Siegel’s Bachelor’s degree thesis at the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany. The device will scare off any would-be thief the moment he begins to steal the bicycle to which it is attached. It is able to continuously sense the environment to distinguish between specific events, for instance a passing tram/car and a serious theft.Siegel created a working model of an alarm that would sound when it sensed movement, but wasn’t initially sure how it would be best attached to a bicycle. “I decided to mount it to the rails of the seat because it allows for comfortable interaction and the position is less obvious as it looks like a small repair kit, ” he says.Siegel chose to use RFID technology rather than Bluetooth to keep the costs down. Siegel explains that the most difficult aspect of creating the alarm was to get the electronic circuit down to a small enough size. The device runs off a kind of battery that can be charged by USB within 2 hours and lasts for a few days with normal use. As the Bikealarm is only at development stage, Siegel hasn’t signed any agreements to put it on the market.【文章大意】文章介绍了一种新型的防止自行车被盗的报警装置。

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We use the Internet to connect with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on.As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. That expression means there is no going back. If you prefer boating, you can say that ship has sailed. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers.Study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure.High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. It is also closely linked to some forms of dementia, a brain disease. Dementia is marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and a reduced ability to reason.Let’s introduce something about the study of it.The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use and high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. In a statement shes aid, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life but it shouldn’t consume us. ”For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on “average 25 hours a week. ”Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take “regular breaks from their computers or smartphones” and to do some “kind of physical activity. ”She also suggests that parents limit their children’s use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.【文章大意】互联网如此有用并且融入我们的生活, 但过度使用它, 会导致多种健康问题。

Unit 2 Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解AEnjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes, at haircutting shops, at airports... even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol. People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O' Hair Salon, Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and makeup tables.“T his is our first show at a hair salon,” Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week's performance. Frank said she and band members, Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time “interacting” with the audience.Concerts in people's homes, or small businesses such as O' Hair's, are becoming more popular, musicians say. “There is a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Domenic Cicala, a musician who opened up his O' Hair Salon to concerts. “People really get to know the artists.”At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers. Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.“People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,” said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Stran gers, a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones. Yet, every word of their songs can be heard.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了现代音乐会在举办场地的选择上更加多样化。

Unit 2 CloningⅠ阅读理解ASeven years ago, back in 2010,some reports covered a story that the world’s longest railway tunnel was under construction in Switzerland. At that point it had already been under construction for over a decade. It had been voted to be built nearly a quarter of a century ago!The idea to build it could date back to nearly 70 years ago—about as old as some of your grandparents!Yesterday,it was finally ready! It’s about 35 miles long and runs 7,500 feet beneath the Swiss Alps,a famous mountain range in Switzerland. It even runs under an old tunnel that was there before. It took a total of 17 years to build at a cost of$12 billion!28 million tons of rock were dug.Two million truckloads of earth were removed! The tunnel connects northern and southern Europe. The opening of this tunnel was such a big deal that the Germany’s leader,Chancellor Angela Merkel,France’s president,Francois Hollande, and Italy’s prime minister,Matteo Renzi, were all there to celebrate,as was Austria’s chancellor Christian Kern. It’s called the Gotthard Base Tunnel.Eventually,325 freight and passenger trains will go through the tunnel, relieving a lot of traffic on the roadways there and making it a more environmentally friendly option. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a wonder of engineering and makes us want to visit it!【解题导语】本文介绍了戈特哈德隧道的建成及其相关情况和由此带来的意义。

Unit 2 Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解。

If you're making determination for a healthier new year, consider a gut makeover(肠道清理).Changing your microbe community(微生物群),however, may not be easy, and nobody knows how long it might take. That's because the ecosystem already established in your gut determines how it absorbs and processes nutrients. So if the microbe community in your gut has been shaped by a daily diet of hamburgers and pizza, for example,it won't respond as quickly to a healthy diet as a gut shaped by vegetables and fruits that has a more varied microbe community.“The nutritional value of food is influenced in part by the microbe community that encounters that food,” said Dr Jeffrey Gordon, the senior author of the new paper and director of the Center for Genome Science and Systems Biology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis.“Nutritional components of a healthy diet have to be viewed from the inside out,” he said,“not just the outside in.”One of the questions the study set out to answer was how individuals with different diets respond when they try to improve their eating habits. The scientists harvested gut bacteria from humans, transplanted them into mice bred under germfree conditions, and then fed the mice either Americanstyle or plantbased diets. The scientists then analyzed changes in the mice's microbe communities.Of interest, the scientists harvested the gut bacteria from people who followed sharply different diets. One group ate a fairly typical American diet, consuming about 3 000 calories a day, high in animal proteins with few fruits and vegetables. Some of their favorite foods were processed cheese and lunch meat. The other group consisted of people who were calorierestricted. They ate less than 1 800 calories a day and had carefully tracked what they ate for at least two years, sticking to a mostly plantbased diet and consuming far less animal protein than the other group,a third fewer carbohydrates(碳水化合物)and only half the fat.Thiscalorierestricted group, the researchers found, had a far richer and more diverse microbe community in the gut than those eating a typical American diet. They also carried several kinds of“good” bacteria, known to promote health, that are unique to their plantbased diet.“Perhaps the best way to shape a healthi er microbe community is to eat morefiber by consuming more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts or seeds,” said Meghan Jardine,a dietitian who was not involved in the current study but has published articles on promoting healthy microbe communities. She urges people to aim for 40 to 50 grams of fiber daily, well above levels recommended by most dietary guidelines.1.What can we know from the first two paragraphs?A.Changing microbiome is fairly easy.B.Ecosystem in gut is shaped by carbohydrates.C.Nutritional components are determined by food intake.D.As to healthy diets, microbe community shaped by vegetables and fruit respond more quickly than that shaped by junk food.2.What can we learn about Meghan Jardine?A.She suggests eating as little as possible.B.She attaches great importance to fiber.C.She is one of the researchers of the current study.D.She advocates consuming more meat in daily life.3.What's the author's attitude toward gut makeover?A.Concerned. B.Opposed.C.Indifferent. D.Nervous.4.Which is the best title for the text?A.Microbe community in our gutB.A gut makeover for the new yearC.Dietary guidelines for daily dietsD.The best way towards a healthier microbe community【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Unit 2 Cloning词句猜测题之句意猜测题(阅读理解)方法指导在阅读理解中,解答猜测句意类题目时要仔细阅读文章,对原句进行语法和句意上的准确分析,做出合理的推理和判断。

典例引领 (2017江苏,D)Old Problem, New ApproachesWhile clean energy is increasingly used in our daily life, global warming will continue for some decades after CO2emissions(排放) peak. So even if emissions were to begin to decrease today, we would still face the challenge of adapting to climate change. Here I will stress some smarter and more creative examples of climate adaptation. When it comes to adaptation, it is important to understand that climate change is a process. We are therefore not talking about adapting to a new standard, but to a constantly shifting set of conditions. This is why, in part at least, the US National Climate Assessment says that: “There is no ‘one-size fits all’ adaptation.”Nevertheless, there are some actions that offer much and carry little risk or cost.Around the world, people are adapting in surprising ways, especially in some poor countries. Floods have become more damaging in Bangladesh in recent decades. Mohammed Rezwan saw opportunity where others saw only disaster. His not-for-profit organization runs 100 river boats that serve as floating libraries, schools, and health clinics, and are equipped with solar panels and other communicating facilities. Rezwan is creating floating connectivity(连接) to replace flooded roads and highways. But he is also working at a far more fundamental level: his staff show people how to make floating gardens and fish ponds to prevent starvation during the wet season.Elsewhere in Asia even more astonishing actions are being taken. Chewang Norphel lives in a mountainous region in India, where he is known as the Ice Man. The loss of glaciers(冰川) there due to global warming represents an enormous threat to agriculture. Without the glaciers, water will arrive in the rivers at times when it can damage crops. Norphel’s inspiration came from seeing the waste of water over winter, when it was not needed. He directedthe wasted water into shallow basins where it froze, and was stored until the spring. His fields of ice supply perfectly timed irrigation(灌溉) water. Having created nine such ice reserves, Norphel calculates that he has stored about 200,000m3of water. Climate change is a continuing process, so Norphel’s ic e reserves will not last forever. Warming will overtake them. But he is providing a few years during which the farmers will, perhaps, be able to find other means of adapting.Increasing Earth’s reflectiveness can cool the planet. In southern Spain the sudd en increase of greenhouses(which reflect light back to space) has changed the warming trend locally, and actually cooled the region. While Spain as a whole is heating up quickly, temperatures near the greenhouses have decreased. This example should act as an inspiration for all cities. By painting buildings white, cities may slow down the warming process. In Peru, local farmers around a mountain with a glacier that has already fallen victim to climate change have begun painting the entire mountain peak white in the hope that the added reflectiveness will restore the life-giving ice. The outcome is still far from clear. But the World Bank has included the project on its list of “100 ideas to save the planet”.More ordinary forms of adaptation are happening everywhere. A friend of mine owns an area of land in western Victoria. Over five generations the land has been too wet for cropping. But during the past decade declining rainfall has allowed him to plant highly profitable crops. Farmers in many countries are also adapting like this—either by growing new produce, or by growing the same things differently. This is common sense. But some suggestions for adapting are not. When the polluting industries argue that we’ve lost the battle to control carbon pollution a nd have no choice but to adapt, it’s a nonsense designed to make the case for business as usual.Human beings will continue to adapt to the changing climate in both ordinary and astonishing ways. But the most sensible form of adaptation is surely to adapt our energy systems to emit less carbon pollution. After all, if we adapt in that way, we may avoid the need to change in so many others.1.The underlined part in Paragraph 2 implies .A.adaptation is an ever-changing processB.the cost of adaptation varies with timeC.global warming affects adaptation formsD.adaptation to climate change is challenging2.What is special with regard to Rezwan’s project?A.The project receives government support.B.Different organizations work with each other.C.His organization makes the best of a bad situation.D.The project connects flooded roads and highways.3.What did the Ice Man do to reduce the effect of global warming?A.Storing ice for future use.B.Protecting the glaciers from melting.C.Changing the irrigation time.D.Postponing the melting of the glaciers.4.What do we learn from the Peru example?A.White paint is usually safe for buildings.B.The global warming trend cannot be stopped.C.This country is heating up too quickly.D.Sunlight reflection may relieve global warming.5.According to the author, polluting industries should .A.adapt to carbon pollutionB.plant highly profitable cropsC.leave carbon emission aloneD.fight against carbon pollution6.What’s the author’s preferred solution to global war ming?A.Setting up a new standard.B.Reducing carbon emission.C.Adapting to climate change.D.Monitoring polluting industries.方法运用[语篇解读] 本文为议论文,题材为环境问题类。

Cloning李仕才一、阅读理解Pollution’s great effects on the environment have become more obvious in recent years, leading to a movement to promote energy efficiency(效率),less reliance on fossil(化石) fuels, and a reduction in air and water pollution. Most scientists agree that such changes are necessary to protect our environment from further harm. The construction industry consumes a large quantity of energy and resources and creates a huge amount of pollution. In the United States, building and development account f or 39% of the country’s total energy use, 12% of total water consumption,68% of total electricity consumption and 38% of carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放), according to the Environment Protection Agency.Green buildings use less energy, water, create less waste, and are healthier to live, work, and go to school in than standard buildings. Builders of green buildings use techniques that use resources more efficiently during the entire building cycle—construction, restoration, operation, maintenance(维护)and demolition(拆毁)—than those who construct more regular buildings. The environmental benefits of building green include the protection of ecosystems (生态系统)and biodiversity, improved air and water quality, less waste flowing into streams, and the protection of natural resources. Green buildings can also result in lower operating costs because they typically use less energy and fewer materials and improve indoor air quality, improving the health of people who live in such buildings. The process of building green includes technical and artistic planning with nature protection in mind. Building designs often reflect the surrounding environment and natural resources and use renewable building materials such as bamboo and straw. In addition, recycled resources found locally are used for green buildings, reducing the cost and air pollution associated with transporting materials over long distances.Careful site selection is important to minimize(最小化)human impact on the surrounding environment. For example, placing a structure in an area that allows it to take advantage of cool breezes(微风)and sunlight can reduce energy use and expenses.More energy and expense are needed for larger buildings as well, so it is important to build small.Green roofs are another feature of green houses that reduce energy use and cost. These roofs are partly or completely covered with plants, which helps to keep heating and cooling costs, prevent water running off and deal with pollutants.Other features of green buildings often include energy and water conservation, recycling, and waste reduction. In addition, renewable energy sources such as solar power, hydropower(水能)and wind power are used for heat and electricity, which greatly reduces costs and decreases the impact on the environment.1.What is the text mainly about?A. The necessity of promoting energy efficiency.B. The process of building green buildings.C. The benefits and features of green buildings.D. Green buildings effects on the environment.2.According to the text, green buildings refer to the buildings that______.A. produce no wasteB. only use clean energyC. are made of recycled materialsD. use energy and resources more efficiently3.Which of the following statements is TRUE about green buildings?A. They rely on fossil fuels and solar power for heat and electricity.B. Small buildings are less efficient in energy use than larger ones.C. The ecosystem has to be considered when building a green building.D. They are difficult to maintain and thus need more operating costs.4.Why are green roofs used ?A. They fit the surrounding environment wellB. They are cheaper than other kinds of roofsC. They can keep natural water for use in everyday lifeD. They can help to control the temperature in the building well【文章大意】在本文中作者主要分析了green building的诸多好处和对环境的巨大的保护作用,呼吁人们多建设这样的绿色的建筑。
