Given Australia's size and the fact that early settlements were far part, Australian society is remarkably homogeneous (同种类的), Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents.
However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city dwellers (居住者) and the country people. Almost 90 percent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve pockets of colonial (殖民的) heritage, but the overall impression is modern, with new buildings reflecting the country's youth In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have “ridden on the sheep's back”, a reference to woo l being the country's main money earner. However, the wool industry is no longer dominant. Much of Australia's relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a self-deprecating (自嘲式的) sense of humor. On the whole, Australia is a society without hierarchies (等级制度),
an attitude generally held to stem from (源于) its prisoner beginnings.
Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner, origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in, three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia's liberal postwar immigration policies led to an influx (涌入) of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans.
The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a “blend of nations” and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is justifiably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.
66. What does the writer mean by saying “It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents.” in the
first paragraph?
A. Australians speak standard English with no local accents whatsoever.
B. You have to practice a lot to learn to understand the different accents.
C. The Australian regional accents are very difficult to understand indeed.
D. There is not much difference between the accents in different areas of Australia.
67. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Most Australians have ancestors who were prisoners.
B. The Australian-economy is dependent on sheep exports.
C. Almost all the people living in Australia come from Europe.
D. The pace of life is different in the city and in the country.
68. The underlined pronoun “it” in the last paragraph refers to “”.
A. community
B. racism
C. blend of nations B. Southeast Asia
69. We can infer from the passage that .
A. there are no signs of Australia's colonial past in its modem cities
B. Australia's recent immigration policy encourages immigrants from Southeast Asia
C. immigrants from Southeast Asia have brought racial problems
D. “riding on sheep's back” resulted in slow development in rural communi ties 70. This
passage mainly focuses on Australia's .
A. society
B. economy
C. racial problems
D. history

①When should people be made to retire? 55? 65? Should there be a compulsory (强迫的) age limit?
②Many old people work well into their 70s and 80s, running families, countries or corporations. Other people, however, despite being fit and highly talented, are forced to retire in their fifties or even earlier because of the regulations of a company or the nation. This essay will examine whether people should be allowed to continue working as long as they want or whether they should be encouraged to retire at a particular stage.
③Some people think there are several arguments for allowing older people to continue working as long as they are able. First of all, older employees have an immense amount of knowledge and experience which can be lost to a business or organization if they are made to retire. A second point is that older employees are often extremely loyal employees and are more willing to carry out company policies than younger less committed staff. However, a more important point is regarding the attitudes in society to old people. To force someone to resign or retire at 60 indicates that the society does not value the input of these people and that their useful life is over. Age is irrelevant to a working life, surely if older employees, are told they cannot work after 60, this is age discrimination. That they become old does not necessarily mean they are going to be sick. Old people could be more aware, experienced and committed than some youngsters.
④Others, however, think that allowing older people to work indefinitely (无限期的) is not a good policy. Age alone is no guarantee of ability. Old people are only ambitious workaholics who are, too selfish and self-centered to believe that a younger person could do better. Actually, many younger employees have more experience or skills than older staff, who may have been stuck in one area or unit for most of their working lives. Having compulsory retirement allows new ideas in an organization. In addition, without age limits, however, many people would continue to work purely because they did not have any other plans or roles. A third point of view is that older people should be rewarded by society for their life's labor by being given generous pensions and the
freedom to enjoy their leisure. We now have youngsters who can't find jobs because old people are choosing not to retire. Old people are not retiring because this new generation of “old people” think they will never die due to modern advances in medicine.
⑤With many young people unemployed or frustrated in low-level positions, there are often calls to compulsorily retire older workers. However, this can affect the older individual's freedom and right to work and can deprive (剥夺) society of valuable experience and insights. I feel that giving workers more flexibility and choice over their retirement age will benefit society and the individual.
71. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the compulsory age limit.
B. To discuss the retirement age.
C. To examine people's working life.
D. To introduce a particular stage.
72. Which of the following is NOT a reason for allowing old people to continue working
according to the passage?
A. Their contribution should be valued.
B. Their experience should be made use of.
C. They can help the youngsters.
D. They are loyal employees.
73. It can be inferred in the fourth paragraph that .
A. the young people have more creative spirits
B. Modern advances in medicine make old people never die
C. Pensions and freedom are not given to the old now
D. old people believe that a younger person could do better
74. The passage is arranged as follows:
A. B. C. D.
75. What is the author's opinion on the retirement age?
A. When to retire should be decided by the employees themselves.
B. The author is against lengthening the retirement age.
C. The retirement age is different from country to country.
D. The author is in favor of allowing old people to continue working.

Chinese colleges have come up with an unusual way to help freshmen settle in. They turn their gyms into campsites for moms and dads, some of whom have traveled thousands of miles across the country, to say goodbye.
For the past five years, Tianjin University in northern China has provided free accommodation for parents in what it calls “tents of love”. Other schools let parents sleep on mats in school gymnasiums.
“Going to college is a life moment and my parents didn't want to miss that,” said Zhang Jinqi, a freshman at Tianjin University majoring in applied chemistry. His parents traveled with him on the 19-hour train journey from Jiangxi province in southern China.
Images of schools gyms packed with parents have been widely shared on: Chinese social media causing a debate on whether China's only children are too coddled.
Some have voiced criticism of Tianjin University, saying that they think both the parents and the children should be more independent.
Xiong Bingqi, the deputy director of think-tank 21st Century Education Research Institute, thinks the problem is overstated. “It has always been a pro blem in China that at the start of every school year, colleges are packed with parents who come along to drop off their children and stay
with them,” he said. “For some families, it's their way to celebrate the first-ever family member who's able to go to college,” Xiong added. “There's nothing wrong with sharing the happiness.”
Zhang's father said the decision to escort their son was a no-brainer. He and his wife are among the many “campers” who sleep in the 550 temporary tents set up in the Tianjin Univer sity gym. “My child has lots of luggage and we also want to go travel,” said his father Zhang Yonghui. “The hotels nearby are fully booked so I had to sleep in the tents.”
Their son also thought nothing of the criticism although he said he was looking forward to living on his own for the first time. “Being accompanied by my parents doesn't mean I'm spoiled,”

(No more than 10 words)
