Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma (文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma. Continuing education gives these adults the chance to increase their knowledge. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. If they know more or learn more, then t hey can get a better job or earn more money.
There are usually a large number of classes to choose from. Some adults learn new skills. Some take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Others take classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. And still others learn how to be good parents, or how to get along with other people.
There are many chances for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, buildings, or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive. Thousands of people take continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma and no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.

If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause great damage to him. According to several leading educational experts, this is one of the biggest mistakes that some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parents expect, and will fall. Unrealistic(不现实) expectations of the parents can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are hopeful in a sensible(明智) way, the child may succeed in doing very well -- especially if the parents are very supportive to their children.
Michael Li is very lucky. He is very fond of music and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and let him attend piano and violin lessons. Although Michael’s mother knows very little about music, his father is a good musician. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.
Michael’s friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was your age I used to win every competition
I enter.” Winston’s father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always quiet and unhappy.
25. The main idea of the passage is _____.
A. what differences there are between parents
B. what aim of a child can be easier to reach
C. how parents should make a child a musician
D. how parents should bring up their children

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider making a web(网). The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times. On the seventh time he made it and went on to make his web. Bruce is said to have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form yourself? What can you change so things will go right next time?
Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway. The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “live with yourself” even though you may have failed.
29. This passage deals with _____.
A. two sides of failure
B. failure and success
C. the “spider-story”
D. the invention of light bulb
30. In the first paragraph the writer tells mainly about _____.
A. how people fail
B. the value of failure
C. famous failures
D. how not to fail
31. The thing the writer does not tell you to do to deal with failure is _____.
A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you
B. think about failure as part of your life
C. keep away from things that are beyond you
D. think about failure to find out what went wrong
32. Even if we have failed, we should _____.
A. learn to forget it
B. learn to remember it
C. learn to enjoy it
D. learn to accept it
D
The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives (添加剂)caused cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装)of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar things are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.
33. Things that are used to keep colours in meats are .
A. harmful
B. useless
C.
helpless D. dangerous
34. People use additives .
A. to make food more unfit to eat
B. to improve the colour and taste of the food
C. to change colour of the food
D. to take off the diseases of the food
35. Which of the following is not true?
A. Some wrappings of food are harmful.
B. Farmers try to make more money on the market by fattening their animals.
C. “The practice continues” means “things are still going on like that”.
D. We needn’t take care of what we eat.

Scientists say progress in medical research could reduce the number and severity (严重性) of malaria (疟疾) cases
worldwide. 36 The events will call attention to the disease and international efforts against it.
This is the third year that World Malaria Day has been
observed. 37 The international malaria community has set the end of 2010 as its target for meeting the first in a series of goals.
One of the goals is to provide protection, medical diagnosis and treatment for every person at risk of malaria. A second goal is to reduce the number of malaria cases and deaths by 50 %or more in 10 years.
38 That represents more than half of the world’s population. America’s Centers for Disease Control and Preventi on says the disease will infect 300,000,000 to 500,000,000 people around the world this year. Each year, malaria kills about 900,000 people worldwide. Those surviving are often left brain damaged, blind or with hearing loss.
39 The WHO says the disease is responsible for one in five childhood deaths there. Malaria kills about 200,000 children in Africa every year, and average of one every thirty seconds.
Malaria is also a threat to people living in parts of Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and southeastern Europe. People from malaria-free countries who visit areas with malaria are also very much at risk. 40 A. Most cases of malaria are in African countries.
B. It is also an important year in the fight against malaria.
C. This is because their bodies have little or no resistance to the disease.
D. The world is expected to reach its goal of zero malaria deaths by 2015.
E. World Malaria Day activities are planned in many countries this Sunday.
F. Signs of the disease appear in victims ten to fifteen days after they are bitten.
G. The World Health Organizatio n estimates that more than three billion people live in areas where malaria is a threat.

I get on well with my deskmate. He admire my fluent English and I usually feel encouraging by his positive comments. One day, while learning the word “overweight” in class, we are asked to make a sentence with it.
I volunteered to do it by saying “my deskmate is overweight boy whose clothes never fit him.” Hearing of this, the whole class burst into laughters and my deskmate’s face turned red. He was very upset but wouldn’t talk to me after class. My mindless words must have hurt him deep. It was not until then that he realized words could be powerful, both positively and negatively. 二、作文
Dear Jack,
I am writing to tell you something about the activity Clear Y our Plate Campaign you referred to in your last letter.
Clear Your Plate Campaignis intended to reduce food waste and help students realize how important it is to save food. Before the campaign, many students, unaware of their wasting of food, bought much more than they could eat and even threw the leftovers without a second thought. But encouragingly, knowing the significance of saving food after the campaign, more and more students are beginning to buy a proper amount of food for their meals.
Personally, it is of great benefit to join in the campaign and form a good habit of clearing the plate. And it is essential to start with ourselves and start from now. Don’t you think so?
I’m looking forward to having your opinions of the campaign. Yours,
Li Hua。
