(2021•江苏七市高三第三次调研)
Feeling overwhelmed?Maybe the parent of a preschooler in your family just called to say they need extra help with child care, and a sick neighbour wants to know if you can pick up some groceries for her.Meanwhile, your best friend keeps calling in need of someone to open up to.
In less stressful times, perhaps, you’d have jumped to help out and lend an ear.But after months of social isolation(孤立),coping with work demands, and caring for loved ones, the balance has started to tip.Suddenly your own need for emotional support is outweighing your capacity for kindness.
That’s understandable, and OK.If you’re feeling insensitive or overburdened these days in response to another’s pain or request for help, that doesn’t make you unkind. What you’re feeling could instead be what we mental health professionals call“compassion fatigue(同情疲劳)”.Anxiety, sadness, and low self-worth can also be symptoms of this sort of emotional tiredness, the American Institute of Stress notes.Often we associate this stress condition with health care workers, but the American Psychological Association warns that anyone who continually cares for others or who witnesses others’sufferings is also at risk.
Research shows compassion fatigue can be successfully treated—with stress-reduction techniques, such as meditation,as well as with specific treatment. The key is learning how to recognise the symptoms so that you can get help.
When the two of us—a psychologist and a social worker—feel like we have “nothing left to give,”supporting our own sad friends or caring for a sick relative can feel like running a marathon with aching muscles. But showing sympathy—and avoiding emotional burnout—doesn’t have to be painful for anyone. As Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki notes in his book The War for Kindness,“empathy(共情)is a skill we can all strengthen through effort.”
24.Which of the following is“compassion fatigue”?
A.The guilt after refusing to help your neighbours.
B.The loneliness without getting emotional support.
C.The anxiety from failing to be successfully treated.
D.The sadness from seeing people suffering from cancers.
25.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People are unable to offer help when they’re stressed.
B.Showing no sympathy for others’sufferings is unacceptable.
C.Whoever cares for others will suffer from emotional tiredness.
D.Those constantly attending to others may experience compassion fatigue.
26.What does this passage try to convey?
passion fatigue can be easily treated.
B.Avoiding emotions causes pain to everyone.
C.The skill of showing sympathy can be built up.
D.Experts can do nothing about compassion fatigue.
27.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Helping Hands Need A Break
B.Sympathy Is What We Can Acquire
C.Stress Symptoms Need Recognising
D.Psychologists and Social Workers In Danger

Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world.Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance,it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油)hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve
circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as“hot”,while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radish, are seen as“cold”.One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot”or“cold”food. However, how much“hot”or“cold”food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic foods for a healthier life also influences the catering industry.Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞),can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as over-worked office staff,in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So,whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup,or increase your mental powers with a serving of pig’s brain soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
28.What is the present situation of tonic food?
A.It is catching less attention.
B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
C.It is well-known worldwide.
D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
29.What is believed to benefit new mothers?

30.Which of the following best explains“catering”underlined in Paragraph3?

The blue denim pants(牛仔裤)were invented in1871and were initially made for miners and cowboys but became a popular fashion among youth in the 1950s and1960s.Denim soon became accepted by most people, making jean pants, jackets, skirts, and more a big part of western culture.
Now,Wrangler which has been making jeans since1947,is greening the industry by dyeing denim with indigo—the deep blue color used for jeans-foam(泡沫),instead of the traditional way of using vats of indigo liquid dye.
While indigo is a natural compound and has been used to dye cloth for centuries, most of the indigo dyes used today are manmade, and dyeing thread for the production of blue jeans is very wasteful. The thread has to be pulled through multiple dye boxes filled with around2,000liters of liquid dye and water, and the process has to be repeated several times for the dye to hold according to Fast Company.
The new eco-friendly foam dyeing method was developed at Texas Tech and uses over99percent less water than the traditional method. In 2017,Wrangler,the Walmart Foundation, and Lee,another blue jeans brand invested in new technology to make the industry more sustainable.
In the new“Indigo good”methods the process saves more than just water;it is expected to use60percent less energy and produces60percent less waste.
“While we have been able to reduce3billion liters of water in product finishing during the past10years,we know that more needs to be done across the entire supply chain.”Wrangler president Tom Waldron told Fashion Network.“Foam technology reduces water consumption and pollution further upstream.”
32.Whom were blue jeans first aimed at?
A.Miners.
B.Youth.
C.The old.
D.The majority.
33.What may be the difference between indigo used now and centuries ago?
A.Source of raw materials.
B.Amount of usages.

34.What’s the advantage of the new foam dyeing method?
A.Saving time.
B.Reducing water’s waste.

B.He is satisfied with the entire supply chain.
