第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分30分)
第一节共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项。

A
The more people I meet, the more I love my dog. Every day I am reminded why I love him so much.
Three weeks before Christmas in 2008 at about 2:00 in the morning, my dog woke us up out of a sound sleep because someone was knocking at our door. He barked in front of me as if to protect me from the stranger who was knocking. My husband answered, and it was a local police officer telling us that my father-in-law had called the police because he forgot our number. My mother-in-law was suffering from a brain disease and was in the hospital. We thanked the officer and raced to the hospital. We would have taken him, but the hospital would consider him to be a dirty pet.
After visiting the hospital we drove home and hugg ed our dog once more. At this point it was unlikely that little dog remembered waking us up. What he did remember was that we left him alone for several hours and he missed us. He thought we missed him, too, so he greeted us at the door with his tail wagging (摇摆).
Someone tried to break in our house that summer, but, once again, our little dog saved the day. Our curtains were damaged, but no one got in. When I got home from work, I found parts of my curtains lying on the floor. We called the police and the officer said that he did a great job.
My dog is a loving sweet dog who just wants some attention. I worked with him for months and now he sits, dances, sings, shakes hands, and so much more. The best part is he looks out for me as much as I look out for him.
My husband says the dog is spoiled (宠坏的); I say he finally has a loving home.
41. The author’s dog woke her up to tell her that _____.
A. someone was knocking at the door
B. her father-in-law called her
C. her mother-in-law was ill
D. someone had broke into her house
42. Why did the police say the dog did a great job?
A. The dog saved the author.
B. The dog did well what people told it.
C. The dog stopped the thief.
D. The dog helped to find the thief.
43. The purpose of the text is to tell readers _____.
A. how to raise dogs
B. what the proper attitude towards dogs is
C. what dogs can bring us
D. why the author’s dog is her best friend
B
My family had always been close and lucky. No one died and no one was sick. We were all living a happy life until my grandfather had cancer. No matter how much I told myself he might not die, somehow I still felt as if it was a death sentence. He fought so hard but died at 63. I honestly didn’t know how I dealt with. I never cried alone. I had the support of my family and teachers. I just remembered my grandfather’s wish that we should celebrate his life.
That’s how we came up with the idea for Hives (蜂房) for Lives —a business my sister and I started where all the profits (赢利) go to the American Cancer Society (ACS). During
our first year we donated (捐赠) more than $2,000 to the ACS. The next year a man who belonged to my grandparents’ “bee club” gave his honey to us, and our little business grew. We sold at wine festivals, schools, and to anyone else who would buy! We had my uncle sell in California and my grandmother sell in Chicago. We have sold honey in 13 states —even in Puerto Rico! This year we donated more than $10,000 to the ACS and we’re hoping to do more next year. Hopefully our business will help research into the causes of cancer or just improve the life of someone with cancer.
I feel like Hives for Lives is a way to honor my grandfather. Honor his love, his life, and his strength. With Hives for Lives reminding me of my grandfather every day, I feel as if I can move on in life, that he will always be alive in my heart and memories. It made me deal with his death, because I felt like I had truly honored his wish of celebrating his life.
44. From the first paragraph, we can learn ____.
A. the author’s grandfather had been ill for years
B. the author showed little love towards his grandfather
C. the author hadn’t thought his grandfather would die
D. the author’s grandfather had tried to fight against his disease
45. The purpose of the author’s starting Hives for Lives is NOT for _____.
A. improving his life
B. honoring his grandfather
C. helping do research for cancer
D. supporting people with cancer
46. What would be the best title for the text?
A. To my grandfather
B. The meaning of life
C. Turning sadness into hope
D. Living with cancer

Have you seen a picture of George Washington lately? Take a look at a dollar or check out a book on Washington from the library. You probably won’t find any pictures of him smiling.
Did the painter forget to tell the President to say “cheese”? Actually, Washington began losing his teeth at age 22 and was entirely toothless by age 64. Most of his pictures
were painted while he wore dentures (假牙). His various sets of dentures were made from both animal and human teeth. These teeth were held together with springs(弹簧) so powerful that George’s jaws (颚) had to work hard to keep the upper and lower parts together. If he relaxed, his mouth would open! This may be the reason why Washington always looks so stern(严肃的)in his pictures.
Washington lived in the 1700s, a time when people didn’t take care of their teeth the way we do today. They didn’t have toothpaste with fluoride(氟化物)(a chemical that prevents teeth from becoming bad). Most people used powdered(粉末) chalk to clean their teeth. Some people had t oothbrushes(牙刷)made of animal hairs with wood or metal handles(金属把手).
Back then, people didn’t visit the dentist every six months for a checkup(检查)and cleaning. George’s dentist, John Greenwood, live d and worked in New York. Washington regularly mailed his dentures(假牙)to Greenwood so they could be repaired. Otherwise, he would see his dentist only to have teeth taken out because they caused him pain. During the American Revolutionary War, General Wash ington’s teeth bothered him so much that he sent for the Fr ench dentist La Mayeur.
Today we don’t have to suffer like George did. So the next time someone takes your picture, show off your teeth and say cheese!
47.There are few pictures of Washington smiling because when his picture was painted ___.
A. the painter fo rgot to tell him to smile
B. he had to try to keep his false teeth in
C. he was unhappy to be a painter’s model
D. the painter didn’t draw his teeth
48. The underlined word “stern” in Paragraph 2 probably means _____.
A. happy
B. serious
C. puzzled
D. confident
49. In Washington’s time, _____.
A. people were unwilling to clean their teeth
B. people used toothpaste to clean their teeth
C. there was no way to stop teeth becoming bad
D. there were toothbrushes made of animal hairs
50. What can we know about George Washington?
A. He said cheese when his picture was being taken.
B. He and his dentist lived in the same city.
C. He suffered a lot from losing teeth.
D. He got medical care only from Greenwood.
