Chapter 1
Preview questions
1. A friend is a person whom I like, and likes me too. A friend is someone to do things with.

and appliances like computers, and a car. If a poor person got very sick, expensive
medicine could help them get better.
3.I think it is a good idea for rich people to give some of their money or possessions to poor
people, because it would help the poor people to improve their situation. It would also
make the world a fairer place.

Level 1 The Happy Prince < Summaries >
[The Happy Prince]
Chapter 1
A swallow falls in love with a Reed but soon leaves her because he wants to join his friends in Egypt. On the way he rests on the statue of the Happy Prince who asks him to take the jewel from his sword to give to a poor woman and her sick son.
Chapter 2
The Swallow takes the jewel from the Prince’s sword and gives it to the mother of a sick boy. Then, as the prince tells him to, he takes one of the Prince’s eyes and gives it to a poor writer. He gives his other eye to a poor girl who sells matches.
Chapter 3
The swallow stays with the prince who asks him to take away his gold covering and give it to the poor. The swallow does this, but winter comes and the swallow dies of hunger and cold. The Mayor has the statue melted down, and only the statue’s broken heart remains.
God asks an angel to bring the most precious thing in the city, and the angel brings back the bird and the heart of the statue.

Chapter 1
A bird begins to tell a water rat the story of Little Hans and the Miller.
The miller says that he is a good friend to Hans. When the miller visits him, Hans always gives him fruit and flowers from his garden.
Chapter 2
When Hans tells the miller that he has had to sell his wheelbarrow to get money for food, the miller says he will give Hans his old, broken wheel-barrow. The miller then asks Hans to give him a piece of wood in return and use it to mend the roof of his house and to give him some of his flowers as well.
Chapter 3
The miller visits Hans again. This time he asks Hans to take a sack of flour to the market for him and sell it. Then one night he asks Hans to get the doctor for him during a bad storm, but the miller won’t lend Hans his lantern. Hans falls into the river and drowns. The water rat becomes angry with the bird because the story has a moral.
