My students often tell me that they do not have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My reply is often a brief “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to justify (证明......有理) myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That's irrelevant(和……不相关的). What's important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have had time to reflect on the “hard worker” dodge (妙计),and I have come to some conclusions, all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.
If you look at the matter analytically, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”,which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the issue of “work” during that time, which can vary in intensity. But, as my professor suggested, it's not the diligence(勤奋) of the work but the quality of the product that's important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone's office: “Don't work harder. Work smarter.” There's a lot of sense in that idea.
If you can't get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means devising(想出) ways of getting more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”,the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off across the board in all your studies.

Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service in the USA, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of October.
Who takes part in Make A Difference Day?
Anyone! Young and old, individuals and groups, anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. How do I get started?
Look around your community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? No matter where you live, there's a need nearby. And on Make A Difference Day, millions of Americans are expected to roll up their sleeves to help others. Y ou can act alone or enlist your friends, family and co-workers.
You can also call the Make A Difference Day Hot Line, 1-800-416-3824, for information. Or use the ideas on this website for inspiration.
What do I do after I've selected a project?
Tell others what you're doing and enlist help. Several weeks before the day, tell us about your plans in the Make A Difference DAY, a national listing of local projects that will be viewed by interested volunteers, other people looking for good project ideas and news media looking for good stories to tell. It will only take a few minutes to post your plans in the DAY hosted by Hands On Network.

You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing(压抑的)tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!
Communicating with negative(消极的;负面的)people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首) of a negative person is put in you, you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker, or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive
and avoid negativity as much as possible.
28.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.
A.make a comparison B.offer an evidence
C.introduce a topic D.describe a daily scene
29.How can negative people have effect on us?
A.By influencing our emotion.
B.By telling us the nature of life.
C.By changing our ways of thinking.
D.By comparing their attitudes to life with others.
30.Some negative people base their happiness on ______.
A.other people's pity for them
B.making other people unhappy
C.building up a positive attitude
D.other people's respect for them
31. According to the passage, to reduce negative people's influence on us, we are
advised to ______.
A.change negative people's attitudes to life
B.show our dissatisfaction to negative people
C.make negative people feel ashamed of themselves
D.communicate with negative people as little as possible
D
In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like.
We share experience (经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor (幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!
32. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?
A. understanding.
B. honesty.
C. reliability.
D. a sense of humor.
33. If you have fair weather friends, ______ .
A. they will give you all that they have when you need help
B. you will be refused when you get into trouble
C. you will become rich
D. you can be sure that you get real friends
34. Good friends need to ______.

A. the qualities of a friend
