阅读以下四篇短文,从每题后所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最正确选项,写在答题纸上。

England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only about three hundred miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising range of climate. People who have never visited England or who have visited only one part of it often make the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true of the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people retire from the job in the north, they often prefer to move down to the south.
Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the southwest, which consists of the counties of Devon and Cornwall, where palm trees, bamboo and many semitropical(亚热带)plants grow well. Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than those elsewhere. Farmers in the area gain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the southwest is one of England's most popular holiday areas.
England is a country __________.
A. with a cold and wet climate
B. with a pleasant climate
C. with a surprising climate
D. with climate of various kinds
In the north of England and the Midlands, ___________.
A.it is cold and wet all the year round
B. the climate is pleasant as a whole
C. it is warm most of the time in a year.
D. only the summer is not cold and wet.
In winter, people in Devon and Cornwall, __________.
A. never see any snow
B. seldom see any snow
C. often see snow
D. may have several feet of snow

A list of Benjamin Franklin's inventions reveals a man of many talents and interests. His natural curiosity about things and the way they work made him try to find ways to make them work better.
Ben had poor vision and needed glasses to read. He got tired of constantly taking them off and putting them back on, so he decided to figure out how his glasses let him see both near and far. He had two pairs of glasses cut in half and put half of each hens(镜片)in a single frame. Today, we call them bifocals(双光眼镜). Everyone knows the story of Ben's famous kite flight. Although he made important discoveries and advancements, Ben did not "invent" the electricity. He did, however, invent the lighting rod which protects buildings and ships from lighting.
In colonial America, most people warmed their homes by building a fire in a fireplace even though it was dangerous and used a lot of wood. Ben figured that there had to be a better way. His invention of an iron furnace stove allowed people to warm their homes less dangerously and with less wood. The furnace stove that he invented is called the Franklin Stove. Interestingly enough, Ben also established the first fire company and the first fire insurance company in order to help people live more safely.
As a postmaster, Ben had to figure out routes for delivering the mail. He went out riding in his carriage to measure the routes and needed a way to keep track of the distance. He invented a simple odometer and attached it to his carriage.
Later, other famous inventors, like Tomas A. Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, followed in Ben's footsteps by trying to find ways to help people live better. How many things invented by Benjamin Franklin are mentioned in the passage?
A. 3
B. 4
C.5
D.6
What do we know about the Franklin Stove?
A. It is made of iron and easy to carry.
B. It is much safer and can save wood.
C. It is much smaller than the traditional stove.
D. It reaches the requirements of the fire company.
Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Franklin invented the bifocals because of his poor vision.
B. Franklin invented the odometer to make his riding easier.
C. Franklin first invented the electricity and then the lighting rod.
D. Franklin invented the odometer when he worked in a post office.
What characteristic did Franklin, Edison and Bell have in common?
A. They had a strong desire to make life better.
B. They were excellent students at school.
C. They were born in the same age.
D. They made people's life simple
What would be the best title for this passage?
A. The life of Benjamin Franklin
B. Benjamin Franklin, a great inventor
C. A man of many talents and interests
D. How to help people live better
C.
In 2001, British Prime Minister, Tony Blair said, "We celebrate the diversity(多样性) in our country, get strength from the cultures and the races that go to make up Britain today."
People from all cultures and races can be found in every corner of Britain and each person in his or her own way has contributed to making Britain the place it is today. If you walk down a street in Britain, especially in the bigger cities, you will usually see people with different hair, skin and eye colours. They may have white, brown or black skin and blonde, brown, black or red hair, with blue, black, brown or green eyes. Many of the people you will see will be British people but they all look different because the people of Britain are a mixed race.
Britain is and has always been a mixed race society. Early in the British history they were invaded by Romans, Saxons, Vikings and Normans armies and later Africans were brought to Britain by force in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as slaves or servants. Over the years, thousands of people have been forced by persecution(迫害) or hunger to leave France, Ireland, Russia, and other countries, and have settled in Britain.
About 8% of the population of Britain today are people from other cultures and races. That is 4.6 million people. According to a BBC report in September 2005, immigration(移民) made up more than half of Britain's population growth from 1991 to 2001. The Guardian newspaper reported in 2007 that the number of immigrants to the UK was 145,000 a year.
People moving to Britain have brought their own cultures with them and try to keep them alive. An excellent example of this is the Notting Hill Carnival which celebrates the Caribbean culture and is now a very big part of British life today.
From Tony Blair's words, we learn that he was _________ for the diversity in Britain.
A. sorry
B. thankful
C.pity
D. anxious
What does the fourth paragraph mainly talked about?
A. Where people get the strength to come to Britain.
B. How Britain became a mixed race society.
C. Where to find people with different hair, skin and eye colours.
D. How people from different cultures live peacefully in Britain.
Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The rate of immigration to Britain increased by more than 50% from 1991 to 2001.
B. In the 17 th century, about 8% of the British immigrants were Africans.
C. There are 4.6 million immigrants in British today.
D. 145,000 people moved out of the UK in 2007.
It can be inferred that __________.
A. England is the best place to live in.
B. people from Africa came to Britain for political reason
C. Britain's population grew sharply one hundred years ago.
D. people from other countries have had some effect on British culture.
D.
What is the most important day of your life? For many people the answer is your Wedding Day — the day when you marry another person and promise to live together as husband or wife for the rest of your lives.
Wedding celebrations differ from country to country — in China the bride wears red; in India the wedding can continue for three days. However, in Britain the bride wears white and the wedding usually only lasts for one day.
In the UK it is possible to get married in a religious or civil ceremony. A religious ceremony takes place in a church. A civil ceremony, on the other hand, can be held in a registry office, in a hotel, or even on a boat!
On the day of the wedding the bride and groom kept separate until the ceremony. It is said to be bad luck if the groom sees the bride in her dress before the wedding. The bride arrives at the ceremony accompanied by her father and bridesmaids. They
officially give her away to her new husband. During the ceremony the happy couple exchang vows(誓言) and give each other wedding rings which they will wear forever. At the end of ceremony they kiss.
Afterwards they go outside where friends and family throw rice or confetti(婚礼中抛撒的五彩纸屑) over them. Then they go on to the reception where there is a lot of food and drink. After the meal the father of the bride and the best man(男傧相) make speeches. Then the bride and groom take the first dance. It's a lot of fun. Finally, at the end of the party the newly-weds leave to go on honeymoon, usually to a very romantic destination.
What is the function of the first two paragraphs?
A. To tell us that we have the most important day in our life.
B. To correct some wrong ideas about wedding.
C. To attract readers' attention to the topic— weddings in Britain.
D. To tell us that people like celebrations.
What does the underlined word "newly-weds" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The bride
B. The bridegroom
C. The best man
D. The newly-married couple Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. People in Britain usually get married in a religious or civil ceremony.
B. On the wedding day, the bride can't see either of her parents.
C. The bride's father will give her away to the bridegroom.
D. The bide and the bridegroom will take the first dance.

Every night, for about 90 minutes, we drift into a strange, shadowy, magical world of our own creation. Poets, writers, artists and even scientists have found inspiration in their “dreamland〞. Dreams are a message from the sub-conscious, a way of tapping your inner self. Keep a note pad and pen by your bedside, and as soon as you wake, note down whatever snatches of dreams you can recall. Dreams can solve your problems, give you advice, reveal your true feelings, and be a source of inspiration.
62. ____________________________
What are you aware of right now? Look at a familiar object in the room as if seeing it for the first time---explore it with your eyes. Next, listen intently to any sounds you can hear. What can you smell and taste at this moment? Touch whatever is within
reach, run your hand over and around it---how does it feel? During the next few weeks activate all your natural power. Visit an art gallery, walk in a pine forest, luxuriate in a second bubble bath, go to a concert, swim, have a massage. Try to experience it all as if it were totally new to you.
63. ____________________________
If you’re right-handed, develop the skills of your left hand or vice versa---allow it to draw something, switch TV channels or drink a cup of tea. Try this exercise: write a list of ten adjectives which characterize your personality using the hand you usually write with. A few days later, repeat the exercise writing with the other hand. Then compare the two lists. You might be surprised at the secrets of your inner self! For example, on the first list you might have written that you’re “witty〞, but the second list might say “suspicious〞. Then try a similar exercise, making two lists of “What I would most like to do〞.
64. ____________________________
Have you ever longed to paint portraits or watercolors, write a novel, draw cartoons, compose a song, design your own clothes, set up a business or landscape your garden? If so, why not start now? Yes, you might discover that your fast efforts are laughable---but try, try again. With a few notable exceptions such as Mozart, most people haven’t developed their ability through sheer hard work. Don’t kid yourself that you haven’t any spare time. It’s a question of making time, of seeing your gifts as important enough to devote a few hours to each week. Who knows---you might be the next Laura Ashley or Agatha Christie?
65. ____________________________
Forget about being told off for daydreaming at school. Daydreaming is good for you! Whether it’s a purely fantasy, or a dream about how life might be in the future, only the right-brain has visions of this kind. Creative visualization, vividly imagining whatever you desire as if it has already happened---and really believing in it, is said to be a powerful way of getting what you want. Many top sports people imagine themselves playing and winning---and it seems to work.

写作文
Dear Editor,
I am a student from GuangmingSenior High School. I often find many people break the traffic rules. For example, some pedestrians cross the streets slowly and some jump over the guardrails in the streets. Some cyclists don't stop when the traffic lights turn red. What's worse, many drivers don't fasten their seat belts while driving. Smoking, speaking on mobile phones and exceeding the speed limit while driving can be seen everywhere.
In my opinion, these actions are very irresponsible and dangerous. It is our duty to obey the traffic rules. We must treasure our lives and protect the lives of others. So I suggest that those who break traffic rules should be fined or published. Only in this way will they think twice about breaking traffic rules again.
Yours,
Li Hua。
