If there was an app claiming to improve your memory, would you be willing to try it? It’s hard to resist the idea of having a better memory.
In response to this perceived need, the brain training industry has grown rapidly, offering a wide range of accessible and affordable mental exercises through smartphone and tablet apps. Many researchers have found evidence suggesting that well-designed exercises can improve mental abilities and lead to better scores on IQ tests. They compare the brain to muscles, suggesting that targeted repetition of memory exercises can strengthen and condition our memory processes, similar to how athletes engage in strength and conditioning by repeatedly exercising specific muscle groups.
In contrast to everyday activities like solving a complex puzzle, memory training apps are specifically designed to provide a more challenging workout for the brain. These apps typically involve tasks that require tracking a large number of objects while being distracted (使分心) by a secondary task, such as mental calculations or exploring a game’s landscape. If this brain training proves effective, it could be beneficial for individuals with brain-related disabilities or those recovering from conditions like cancer.
Critics, though, argue that while the concept is appealing, the overall evidence fails to demonstrate significant improvement in core brain processes. Additionally, despite the claims made by many apps and brain training companies, scientists have yet to identify the key factors that make an intervention truly effective or determine the best approaches to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking help.
While the question is still open to debate, there is evidence suggesting that short-term working memory training can benefit high-functioning individuals. However, it’s important to note that brain training, like diet and exercise, is unlikely to have identical effects on every individual.
28. In what way is the brain similar to muscles according to many researchers?
A.In testing results. B.In work processes.
C.In bodily functions. D.In training methods.
29. What is the main feature of the typical tasks in memory training apps?
A.Simple. B.Effective.
C.Demanding. D.Interesting.
30. What do critics think memory training apps lack?
A.Legal claims. B.Proven effects.
C.Tailored services. D.Appealing concepts
31. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Can Our Memory be Improved?
B.Does Brain Training Actually Work?
C.What have Scientists Found about Memory?
D.What does the Brain Training Industry Bring?
An adult African elephant consumes about 223 liters of water and 3,080 pounds of roots, grass and fruit daily. That’s like having 634 cans of soda and 1,200 hamburgers every day. This keeps them moving thousands of miles across Africa each year. Elephants usually migrate between March and May. Females live in groups with their children, and quickly run out of the food supply. They hit the road in search of food. Male elephants live alone, so they don’t use resources as quickly as the females. Instead, they migrate during their mating cycle. When the females pack their trunks, so do the males.
During migration, elephants face short water supplies and extremely high temperatures. But people are their number-one problem. Poachers (偷猎者) kill 35,000 elephants each year for ivory. Many African farmers build fences (栅栏) to protect crops and cattle, which might block regular migration paths. Traffic roads affect elephant migration, too. During one study of 28 elephants in Central Africa, only one female crossed an unprotected road.
Scientists, wildlife organizations and governments cooperate to find solutions for Africa’s elephants. “To unlock the secret of where elephants move and how they move, we place collars (项圈) with a satellite unit inside,” Dr. Michael Chase says. GPS collars help map which routes elephants use most so that countries can establish protected elephant passages.
Locals come in as well. James Isiche, East Africa Director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says, “We have got the community on our side by a project; they’ve agreed to partner with us to conserve elephants.” The local community run wildlife parks to attract tourists. “This project helps us take care of both the wildlife and our cows,” says Sikira, a tribal elder in Maasai, K enya. Protecting elephant migration routes allows these gentle giants to survive.
32. What can we learn about the elephants from paragraph 1?
A.They show an interest in hamburgers.
B.They move south to survive the cold.
C.They migrate for different reasons.
D.Females live shorter for food shortage.
33. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A.Results of poaching. B.Reasons for killing elephants.
C.Difficulties in migrating. D.Efforts to protect migration paths.
34. Why are collars applied by scientists?
A.To discover the secret of migration.
B.To track elephants with technology.
C.To identify the population of elephants.
D.To explore a new route for migration.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A.Say No to Ivory B.A Journey in Africa
C.Ready for the Move D.Technology in Migration
Food safety is a problem in all places around the world. Therefore, the WHO released five simple rules for preparing food in a safe way. 36 Key 1: Keep clean.
37 People should wash their hands often before touching food and while they are preparing food. People should wash all surfaces and equipment used for preparing food.Key 2: 38
People should use different equipment and tools for touching and preparing raw (生的) foods.Key 3: Cook completely.
People should cook eggs and meat especially carefully. These foods may carry more microorganisms (微生物) than other foods. Food like soup must be boiled for at least a minute to make it be cooked completely. 39 Key 4: Keep food at safe temperatures.
When people are finished with eating, they should keep the left food in a refrigerator below 5°C and shouldn't store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20°C, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. But temperatures above 60° C or below 5° C control the growth of microorganisms. 40 Key 5: Use safe water and raw materials.
People should use safe water and choose fresh foods. Damaged or old food may develop harmful chemicals as it gets older.

When we are little kids, birthday parties are big occasions. They are our time to shine, and we love everything about them: the balloons, the games, the cake, the gifts, and so on.
After reading cool stories about police officers (警察) solving cases, Allen Miller thought the police were great, hoping to become one of them! So, when he had to choose a theme for his seventh birthday party—he went with his favorite: the police! And all he wanted for his birthday party was a model police car. He excitedly invited some of his friends and anxiously awaited the day. Unfortunately, none of them could make it to the party due to various reasons. Allen’s mom Rachel wrestled (纠结) with the challenging decision: should she cancel (取消) the party?
Officer Frank Smith, who had already planned with Rachel and agreed to show up at the party, heard from Rachel that it might be canceled due to low attendance (出席率). That’s when he decided to save the day. After all, his duty is to serve and protect, and he decided to serve him the most amazing seventh birthday party! Officer Smith got the whole local police to join in.
On the day of Allen’s party, Officer Smith picked up Rachel and Allen in his police car. They stopped at Town Hall, and officer Smith led them into the meeting room where a group of policemen were waiting to wish Allen a happy birthday. There, a party was waiting for him. The room was filled with warmth and he was greeted by the smiling faces of officers who had stepped away from their duties to celebrate with him. A large cake stood at the center of the room, drawing Allen’s eyes. As they gathered around the cake, Allen felt a rush of joy. With each officer’s cheer,
he blew out the candles (蜡烛), making a wish that sparkled in his eyes as brightly as the candles had.
After they enjoyed the cake, Officer Smith took out a gift bag.
