Generally，out of politeness，people prefer an indirect way to make an order instead of using a direct way. Then why indirect orders are more polite than direct ones? This is because indirect orders has dual functionality。

Dual functionality means there are two functions at the same time in a sentence in communication. For example，the sentence "The cup is empty. ”is a narration and also an order. It is this dual functionality that provides the listener an excuse to refuse the order.If the listener are not willing to fo11ow the order, he can pretend to failed to under the speaker’s real intention by responding literally without hurting the order maker like this:
A: The cup is empty.
B: Yes, it is.
In this way，the speaker won’t feel too embarrassed. That’s to say，it’s a language strategy for the speaker，to take care of the face of both sides，to make orders in an indirect way. Politeness theory calls it
Face-saving Theory，which holds the idea that many speech . actions are in fact a face threatening that is against the face of both sides. The attention to politeness is to reduce the threatening brought about by some communicating actions and to spare no effort to protect the faces of both sides. In that way，the listener’S loss can be smaller. And that is why speaker “A”chose“The cup is empty. instead of the direct order“Fulfill my cup.。
