论《唐诗三百首》中的颜色词翻译

摘要:以许渊冲等英译的《唐诗三百首》为蓝本,从汉语颜色词起源、构成及文化意义的角度对颜色词翻译的一般规律和翻译中要注意的一些问题作了尝试性的探讨。

引言
中国是一个诗的国度。

诗歌发展到唐代,进入了它的鼎盛时期,这个时期不仅作品与作家众多,而且风格多样,流派纷呈,诗歌艺术达到了炉火纯青、精美绝伦的境地。

在《唐诗三百首》中,五彩缤纷的颜色词的大量运用,使各首诗篇绚丽夺目。

据笔者统计,颜色词在作品中共出现近350次。

本文拟从汉语颜色词的起源、构成及文化意义的角度对颜色词翻译的一般规律和翻译中要注意的一些问题作尝试性的探讨。

一、按音节划分(一)单音节颜色词
人们常说,给我一滴水珠,就可以折射出七色阳光———赤、橙、黄、绿、青、蓝、紫,以上七色为一些基本颜色词。

因为英语中也有所谓的原色词(primary colors ),如red ,pink ,yellow ,orange ,blue ,violet ,purple ,green and brown ,所以这类颜色词的翻译比较简单,一般都有固定对应词。

另一部分是非基本颜色词,如:翠、朱等等。

对于这一部分颜色词的翻译,弄清楚它们所表示的具体含义是关键。

如“皂”原指栎树的果实,其壳煮出的汁可作黑色染料,后用来表黑色black ;“朱”本指一种红心的树木,后用来表示正红色vermilion ,vermeil ;“赭”本为赤铁矿石,一般呈暗棕色或赤褐色,赭粉可以用作红褐色颜料,所以“赭”后用于表示红褐色reddish brown ,burnt ochre ;“翠”原本是翠鸟,因其羽毛颜色为翠绿色,后作颜色词专表翠绿色emerald green ,green ;“素”本为白色
生绢名,后来用作生绢所具有的颜色〔1〕
(6-8)white ,如:
此皆骑战一敌万,缟素漠漠开风沙。

Each of them could match myriads ,these tw o were battle steeds ;On the white silk they stir up clouds of dust as they run at
speed.〔

(173)又如:丹:依成方制成的颗粒状或粉末状的中药(从前道家炼
药多用朱砂,所以称为“丹”),古代用作染色的颜料〔red pigment 〕
凡画者丹质。

———《仪礼・乡射礼记》,后常用来表示红色vermil 2lion ,如:
联步趋丹陛,分曹限紫微。

T ogether we go up the vermillion steps ,
Separated by my office in the right ;〔

这里的“丹陛”实为“vermillion step ”。

)又如:绛,大赤也。

———《说文》,后常用来表示大红crims on ,如:绛帻鸡人报晓筹,尚衣方进翠云裘。

The crimson -capped watchman herald the m orntide ;
The wardrobe -keepers send in the king fisher -cloud gown.〔2〕
(84)(绛帻鸡人:戴红色头巾的负责伺更报时的官员。

《汉
官仪》:宫中夜漏未明,三刻鸡鸣,卫士立于朱雀门外,著绛帻(红布包头像鸡冠)鸡唱。

这里的“绛帻鸡人”实为“crimson -capped
watchman ”。

)有些颜色词所表示的不是单一的色彩,如“青”可以指蓝色
blue ,也可以指翠绿的verdant ,也可以指绿色green ,或者指常绿的evergreen ,还可以指灰白色grey ,甚至还可以指黑色black ,在翻译中要视具体语境及其搭配而定:
蓬莱此去无多路,青鸟殷勤为探看。

T o the three fairy hills it is not a long way.
W ould the blue -bird oft fly to see her on their height ?〔2〕
(347)十年一觉扬州梦,赢得青楼薄悻名。

Having dreamed ten years in Y angzhou ,I w oke a rover
Who earned in mansions green the name of fickle lover.〔2〕
(321)一去紫台连朔漠,独留青冢向黄昏。

When she left the Purple Palace ,before her the deserts spread ;And now only an evergreen tomb crouches in the gloom

春风对青冢,白日落梁州。

S pring breezes have made the Princess’grave verdant and fair,
And the pale sun is sinking over the Northwest.〔2〕(369)
五陵北原上,万古青蒙蒙。

The Han tombs on the northern plain
Are shrouded in eternal grey.〔2〕(204)
君不见高堂明镜悲白发,朝如青丝暮成雪。

Do you not see the mirrors bright in chambers high
G rieve o’er your snow-white hair though once it was silk-black?〔2〕(112)
再如“黄”在不同的语境中也有不同的含义:
雨中黄叶树,灯下白头人。

All here are yellow-leaved trees in the rain,
And a white-haired man in the dim lamp-light.〔2〕(230)(指普通意义上的黄色)
出塞复入塞,处处黄芦草。

Where’er you turn,in and out of the Pass
Y ou see but withered reeds and grass.〔2〕(45)(此句中的“黄芦草”指枯黄的芦苇和草,所以将其意译成“withered reeds and grass”。

)再如“红”在不同的语境中也有不同的含义:
坐看红树不知远,行尽青溪不见人。

The flaming trees he watched,and entranced,
K new not how far he was from home,
Not met a single soul when to the end
O f the blue stream he soon was come.〔2〕(64)(指花红似火)
红豆生南国,春来发几枝?
Red berries grow in southern land,
In spring they overload the trees.〔2〕(81)(指普通意义上的红色)
感此伤妾心,坐愁红颜老。

This sight w ould break my heart,and I’m afraid,
Sitting alone,my rosy cheeks w ould fade.〔2〕(97)(指面若桃花色)
(二)多音节颜色词
这类颜色词由两个单音节颜色词构成,分两种情况:
1、由两个表示同一色调的单音颜色词构成联合式多音颜色词,如朱红vermillion,vermeil,bright red;青黛为emerald;苍苍为azure;green由于这类词中的两个单音节词表示同一种颜色,只需将该颜色译出即可。

如:
影落明湖青黛光,金阙前开二峰长。

Their shadows fall into the lake like emerald,
T w o peaks stand face to face above the G ate of G old.〔2〕(119)(青黛:青黑色。

)
2.、由两个表示不同色调的单音颜色词构成偏正式多音颜色词,用来指介于两者之间的颜色,如红青dark purple,苍黄green2 ish yellow等等。

一般来说,这类颜色词以后一个颜色词为主,前一个颜色词起修饰作用。

翻译时,可以采用“基本颜色词+基本颜色词”的形式,如:红绿色(绿中带红)red-green,黄绿色(绿中带黄)yellow-green等等〔3〕(59)如:
粉墙丹柱动光彩,鬼物图画填青红。

The rosy cassia w ood shimmered
Against the whitewashed walls,
And the spiritual figures filled out
The frescoes in blue and red.〔2〕(271)
二、文化指示颜色词
语言作为文化的一个有机组成部分和文化的一种载体,自然在其形成和发展变化的过程中离不开文化的发展和变化。

广义的文化可以划分为三个层次,即表层文化,中层文化和深层文化。

表层文化体现在器物方面,包括一切有形的物质和精神文化,比如饮食、服饰、艺术等;中层文化体现在制度方面,包括礼仪习俗、行为方式和体制规范等;深层文化体现在价值观念方面,包括思维方式、价值观念、风土人情和审美情趣等。

〔4〕(180)因此,在颜色词的翻译中,应注意其文化内涵。

如:
黄门飞倥不动尘,御厨络绎送八珍。

The eunuchs then come trotting so light as to raise no dust;
One by one they bring them the dainties for imperial gust.〔2〕(145) (黄门:宦官,太监因宦官在涂有黄色的宫门内服役,故代称之。

)紫泉宫殿锁烟霞,欲取芜城作帝家。

In clouds and mists was locked his palace bleak;
The Tyrant fancied a new home to seek.〔2〕(358)(紫泉:即紫渊(唐避高祖讳,改作泉),水名,在长安北。

此处代指长安。

)不堪玄鬓影,来对白头吟。

I cannot bear the sight of their dark wing,
Their hymn to innocence gives me no relief.〔2〕(1)(此句中的“白头”借指诗人本人,所以译成“me”。

)
白狼河北音书断,丹凤城南秋夜长。

F or years no news has come from the frontier.
Nights in the capital are long and drear.〔2〕(6)(此句中的‘白狼河’即今辽宁省大凌河,流经锦州入海,古称白狼水。

所以按意思译成‘the frontier’。

而此句中‘丹凤城’指唐京城长安。

所以按其意思译成‘the capital’。

)
谁为含愁独不见,更教明月照流黄。

H ow can she any m ore her sorrow hold?
On her silk bed-curtains the m oon gleams cold.〔2〕(6)(此句中的‘流黄’原指黄紫相间的丝织品,这里指帷帐。

所以按其意思译成‘silk bed-curtains’。

)
射杀山中白额虎,肯数邺下黄须儿。

In a sense,he is another Zhou Chu.
With a single shot,a tiger,he fells.
In muscular strength,he exceeds G ao Zhang;
”The brown whiskered lad”,whose every shot tells.〔2〕(60)(射杀

山中白额虎:汉代李广、晋代周处都射杀过猛虎。

邺下黄须儿:指
曹操次子曹彰,刚烈勇猛善于骑马射箭。

)自怜碧玉亲教舞,不惜珊瑚持与人。

He cherishes his darling love so much As himself to teach her dances ;
And gives away his coral in sheer spite
Since his emerald entrances.〔2〕
(68)(此句中的‘碧玉’原指南王
侍妾名,此指洛阳女儿,所以将其译成‘his darling love ’。

)一枝红艳露凝香,云雨巫山枉断肠。

She is a peony sweetened by dew impearled ,
Far fairer than the G oddess bringing showers in dreams.〔

(105)(此句以红艳的牡丹比作杨贵妃,所以将‘红艳’译成‘a peony ’。

)杨花雪落覆白苹,青鸟飞去衔红巾。

T o cover the white duckweeds the catkins fall like snow ;
Carried by the bluebirds the red handkerchiefs in the air flow.〔

(145)(杨花雪落覆白苹:杨树的花絮像雪花一样飘落并盖在浮萍上。

此处为隐语,暗喻杨国忠与虢夫人的暧昧私通关系。

青鸟:神话中西王母的使者,后常被用作男女之间的信使。

红巾:
妇女用的红手帕。

衔红巾,暗喻杨氏兄妹的不正当关系。

)丹青不知老将至,富贵于我如浮云!
Absorbed in painting ,you know not old age is coming ;
Indeed ,“T o me wealth and rank are like clouds scudding.”〔2〕
(169)(丹青:绘画用的颜料,借指绘画。

“丹青”句:说曹霸为绘画,倾尽毕生精力,毫不知自己已经老了。

《论语・述而》:“乐以忘忧,不知
老之将至云尔。

)途穷反遭俗眼白,世上未有如公贫!
W orldlings look down on you when you have come to the dead -end ;
And there ’s no one poorer than you throughout our native land !

(171)(俗眼白:世俗的白眼。

眼白,不以正眼看人,以示轻蔑。

事见《晋书・阮籍传》:“阮善青白眼,见礼俗之人则以白眼对
之。

”
)古来青史谁不见?今见功名胜古人。

All must have seen those bamboo tablets ,
Where the ancients had events engraved.We have by far beaten the ancients :
We ’ve seen merits w on for dangers braved.〔

)翠华摇摇行复止,西出都门百余里。

此指皇帝的车驾马队。

)结论
综上所述,在古典诗歌中进行颜色词的英译的时候,首先要弄清楚颜色词的构成方式,然后再采取相应的翻译策略。

为了真正做到“信、达、雅”,切忌望文生义,须对其文化内涵有必要进行深入研究,才能真正让世人了解中国的博大精深的古典文化。
