My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words. Throughout my life, he offered advice rarely. But the words were always appropriate to the situation I was facing.
As a teen when I struggled with making se nse of the world around me, he said, “All things are relative.” He taught me the right view of the world. When I was offered the opportunity to be a manager of an organization as an undergraduate student, I asked him for advice because he was a senior mana ger of a large company. His advice was simple, “Only when you become the manager can you have a vision for how you can make the organization better; management isn't about power and it's about leadership.” I learned what I needed was not only to be respons ible for my team but also to have leading ability. When I was feeling down, he explained, “Think that you make the wrong choices in life, sometimes.”
My dad is 86 now, living on his own and enjoying life while struggling with the challenges that aging brings. He keeps a positive attitude despite long pain and the losses that come in life. Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the joys of my young family. As I tell him how we're heading off cycling or on a trip or out to play tennis, now his typical response is, “Do it while you can.” This is very important. We can't be sure of the future. My father's advice is like the ancient dictum(格言)of “ carpe diem”— seize the day and enjoy it to the fullest.
M y dad rarely “lectured me”. He trusted me, and helped me when I needed help. His patience and wisdom have been true gifts in my life. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. It's enough to “just get me started”.
(1)Why did the author's dad tell him “All things are relative.”? (No more than 10 words) (2)What qualities should a manager have according to the author? (No more than 5 words) (3)What is the purpose of the author's father talking with him on the phone every day? (No more than 10 words)
(4)How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (No more than 10 words)
(5)How do you feel about the ancient dictum of “carpe diem”? (No more than 20 words) 【答案】(1)To teach the author the right view of the world.
(2)Both responsibility and leading ability.
(3)Learning (To learn) more about the pleasure of the author's family.
(4)His father's words make him take action.
(5)(One possible version:) I totally agree with it, because I think one should seize the day to enjoy his life without regret.

As a teen when I struggled with making sense of the world around me, he said, ‘All things are relative.’ He taught me the right view of the world.”

To teach the author the right view of the world.

根据第二段中的“I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my team but also to have leading ability.”

Both responsibility and leading ability.

根据第三段中的“Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the joys of my young family.

Learning (To learn) more about the pleasure of the author's family.

根据最后一段中的“As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”.

His father's words make him take action.

I totally agree with it, because I think one should seize the day to enjoy his life without regret.(我完全同意,因为我认为一个人应该抓住这一天,享受他的生活没有遗憾)

Do you know the look of wonder and joy that children get on their face when they listen to someone reading them a story?Schools across the nation are bringing in volunteers to guide children in this very way. If you simply enjoy spending time with children, being a reading volunteer can be a great way to help support the upcoming generation of readers.
Reading volunteers work with elementary school age children to promote reading. They may read books to children, listen to children read aloud, or distribute books to school children. Reading volunteers promote the activity of reading, rather than focusing on teaching reading skills. They may read to a whole class of children, to a small group, or be assigned a child to read to one-on-one. During the time they spend with new readers, reading volunteers encourage them to learn to read.
Almost anyone who knows how to read can be a reading volunteer. High school students, college students, parents, grandparents, and police officers are just an example of the kinds of people who become reading volunteers. Being able to read and wanting to spend time inspiring children to read are the only skills needed to be a successful reading volunteer.
Several educational research studies show that children who are involved in programs with adult reading volunteers improve their school performance levels. For example, in 1998,
researcher Sara Rimm-Kaufmann found that first graders involved in a program with an adult reading volunteer three times a week had better letter recognition and reading skills than similar first graders who hadn't been involved in such groups. In 2000, the Eugene Research Institute found that fifth graders who had been in "SMART", an adult volunteer literacy program, were 60% more likely to have grade-level scores in standardized reading tests. Moreover, a 2006 study by Brian Volkmann showed that children who were read to by adult volunteers had improved school attendance, which is a major predictor of high school graduation rates.
In addition, reading volunteers themselves can gain a lot of benefits that range from expanding their personal networks to adding valuable skills to their resumes. They also enjoy the special time they get to spend with young children. Many volunteers have heart-warming stories to share with the children they read to. The volunteers know that they are inspiring young children with a proved educational strategy. So, if you have time, energy, and skill to support children's literacy, it is a good idea to sign up to be a reading volunteer.

When was the last time you sat on a park bench(凳子)? Did you stay for long? A new kind of park benches will limit the amount of time you can sit there. If you don't get up in time, it could be very painful: there are many sharp spikes (钉子) on the part that you sit on!
Visitors who want a rest on the bench need to put a coin in a machine next to it. Once the money was accepted, the spikes disappear into the bench. Then visitors can sit down comfortably, but only for half an hour. When the time's up, the spikes slowly start moving up again. It doesn't hurt at first, but after a minute, they start coming up even more quickly. They aren't long enough to cause serious hurt, but they do cause pain, as tests have shown. But why have they been installed (安装)?
"Our public park is very popular in summer," a spokesperson for the park explained. "But with all the thousands of people who visit the park, there aren't enough benches for everyone. We want to make sure that the benches are shared by more visitors, and to stop people taking a bench and staying there all day. Installing spikes seems to be the fairest way of stopping people doing this."
(1)How is the new kind of park bench different from other benches?
(2)What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
(3)Why are the new benches installed?
(4)The passage says, "Installing spikes seems to be the fairest way of stopping people doing this." Do you agree with this? Please state your reasons.
(1)It can limit the amount of time people sit on it (with sharp spikes). / If you don't get up from it in limited time, it could make you painful./ There are many sharp spikes on it to limit the amount of time people sit on it.
(2)It's mainly about how the new kind of benches work.
(3)They're installed to solve the problem that some people take a bench too long and others can't share it.
(4)Yes. If people are asked to pay for benches, they will not take it too long when they don't really need it. Thus, every visitor will have the chance to share it. / No. Benches in parks should be free to visitors. The park can build more benches to solve its problem instead of limiting the time when visitors have a rest on benches.

根据第一段中的“If you don’t get up in time, it could be very painful: there are many sharp spikes on the part that you sit on!”

It can limit the amount of time people sit on it (with sharp spikes). / If you don’t get u p from it in limited time, it could make you painful./There are many sharp spikes on it to limit the amount of time people sit on it.。

Visitors who want a rest on the bench need to put a
coin in a machine next to it. Once the money was accepted, the spikes disappear into the bench. Then visitors can sit down comfortably, but only for half an hour. When the time’s up, the spikes slowly start moving up again.”

It’s mainly about how the new kind of benches work.。

根据第三段中的“We want to make sure that the benches are shared by more visitors, and to stop people taking a bench and staying there all day.”

They’re installed to solve the problem that some people take a bench too long and others can’t share it.。

Yes. If people are asked to pay for benches, they will not take it too lo ng when they don’t really need it. Thus, every visitor will have the chance to share it. /No. Benches in parks should be free to visitors. The park can build more benches to solve its problem instead of limiting the time when visitors have a rest on benches.。

At the age of forty-five, my usually well-ordered life became full of changes. After twenty-two years of working in a bank, a plan to use less staff led to the unemployment of over one hundred people. Unluckily, I was one of them.
My once secure future became uncertain. However, I was not a single parent, so the family did not depend only on my income and my husband can support the family. My motto has always been, "Change is good; change is progress", but when it affected my livelihood, I had to change it. "Accept change and make the most of it." From the beginning, I chose to look at this matter not as bad luck, but as a welcome chance. I refused to become sorry; instead, I actively planned to do something new and different.
Having a positive attitude made all the difference in the way I pursued the future. First, I decided to return to college and graduate many years later than I should have. Doing this at my age took more than a little courage. Not being a graduate had never held me back in my career in the bank, but now it's a personal goal I longed to achieve. With a lot of determination, I went to evening classes and became an adult student. In the class, I became more and more confident. During this time, I realized that no matter what life throws in our way, nothing can hinder our personal growth.
The second thing I did to improve my inner self was to reevaluate my past life. It used to be filled with endless, and sometimes meaningless events. But now, my heart and life are completely around people I care for.
The loss of my job led to some positive changes in my life. Revisiting the past made room for the future. I realize that I have accepted the change, and am making the most of it.
(1)What made the author lose her job? (no more than 10 words)

I was in the country, Vietnam, from 1970 to 1971. I was a nineteen-year-old soldier. Six months
after my arrival, I stepped on a land mine and lost my right foot. Although it was a painful experience, I also felt great relief and happiness. I knew it meant my plane ticket home. So I had mixed feelings after the accident.
Back in the US, I was fitted with an artificial leg and I threw away my uniform and my Purple Heart. They had no value to me. They reminded me of what I wasn't proud of and I had one constant reminder: one artificial leg.
Twenty-six years later, I participated in a bicycle race in Vietnam, which was designed for Americans and veterans (老兵) and civilians of Vietnam. In the race I formed a connection with Tran, a veteran of the former North Vietnam. Like me, Tran had also lost his leg due to a mine. But unlike me, he had also lost some family members in the Americans' bombing. He said he used to be filled with hate for Americans.
One day, I heard that he had slipped in the race by accident, and that his leg was hurting him. I offered him some medicine to ease his pain. He gave me a "thumbs up". He smiled his big smile. And that was enough. We had a special connection. Although language was an obstacle to our communication, it didn't hinder us from conveying our friendship. In the race, we found that we could relax and enjoy each other's company, even without words.
During the race, I found his prosthesis (假肢) was not good, so I considered arranging a new prosthesis for him after returning home. And I invited him to visit my country. Joyfully, he agreed. When I returned home, I talked with my friend Jim, who owned the company where my prosthesis was made. I told him about Tran and why he should have a new prosthesis. Jim agreed. Later, Tran travelled to my country. We got Tran a new prosthetic leg. I was happy to give something to him—and in a way, to his country. At my daughters' school, he talked about forgiveness. Despite their country's loss, he found the place in his heart to forgive.
He is my friend, and I am happy that now our friendship will continue for the rest of our life.(1)Why did the author have mixed feelings after the accident? (no more than 10 words) (2)What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? (only 1 word)
(3)What did the author's friend, Jim, agree to do? (no more than 10 words)
(4)What was the change of Tran's feelings to Americans? (no more than 10 words)
(5)Why does the author say he and Tran will be friends for the rest of their life? Please give reasons in your own words. (no more than 20 words)
(1)Because although he was injured, he could returned home.
(2)Prevent.
(3)To make a new prosthesis for Tran for free.
(4)He turned hate to forgiveness.
(5)Open.

Although it was a painful experience, I also felt great relief and happiness. I knew it meant my plane ticket home. So I had mixed feelings after the
accident.”

Because although he was injured, he could return home.

根据第四段中的“Although language was an obstacle to our communication, it didn't hinder us fr om conveying our friendship.”

根据第五段中的“so I considered arranging a new prosthesis for him after returning home…When I returned home, I talked with my friend Jim, who owned the company where my prosthesis was made. I told him about Tran and why he should have a new prosthesis.”

To make a new prosthesis for Tran for free.

根据第三段中的“He said he used to be filled with hate for Americans. At my daughters' school, he talked about forgiveness.”

He turned hate to forgiveness.

根据第四段中的“We had a special connection. Although language was an obstacle to our communication, it didn't hinder us from conveying our friendship. In the race, we found that we could relax and enjoy each other's company, even without words.”;以及倒数第二段中的“I was happy to give something to him—and in a way, to his country. At my daughters' school, he talked about forgiveness. Despite their country's loss, he found the place in his heart to forgive.”

6.Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
The art of academic writing is not easy to master. ________ Academic writing is the skilful exposition and explanation of an argument, which the writer has carefully researched and developed over a sustained period of time. ________ But the joy of reading and sharing with others, one's succinctly composed piece of argument, is incomparable.
Before beginning to write, the writer must ask himself a few questions – Why am I writing? What is it that I intend to share with others? What purpose will my writing serve? Have I read enough about the topic or theme about which I am going to write? ________ Because academic writing is a serious activity – it makes one part of a shared community of readers and writers who wish to disseminate and learn from well-argued pieces of writing.
The structure of an argumentative essay should take the form of – Introduction (which should be around ten percent of the entire essay), Body (it should constitute eighty percent of the piece)
and the Conclusion (again, ten per cent of the essay). ________ The body should include cogent and coherently linked paragraphs and the conclusion should re-state the argument and offer a substantial ending to the piece.

D. If one is hesitant to answer even one of the aforementioned questions, one had better not write at all!
E. It may take one a considerable period of time to know the skills of academic writing, even long after his/her college graduation.
F. It is a time-consuming activity and demands patience and perseverance.

根据空前“The art of academic writing is not easy to master.” C. It is a formal skill, which requires precision and accuracy, and is perfected by continuous and d edicated practice.

根据空前“which the writer has carefully researched and developed over a sustained period of time.” F. It is a time-consuming activity and demands patience and perseverance.

D. If one is hesitant to answer even one of the aforementioned questions, one had bet ter not write at all!

根据空前“The structure of an argumentative essay should take the form of – Introduction (which should be around ten percent of the entire essay), Body (it should constitute eighty percent of the piece) and the Conclusion (again, ten per cent of the essay).” B. The introduction should function as the hook which draws the reader in and holds his attention.

A fresh-faced batch of teenagers just began a new school year, but will they get the most out of it? In the mornings, many are forced to get to school much too early. And at night, screens are a temptation that's hard to resist. This double whammy (双重灾难) is a perfect lesson in sleep deprivation (剥夺).
Three out of every four students in grades 9 to 12 fail to sleep the minimum of eight hours that the American Academy of Medicine recommends for their age group. In most cases, insufficient sleep results in reduced attention, preventing students' progress and lowering grades. More alarmingly, sleep deprivation may lead to physical and emotional problems.
It is important to understand why teenagers have a particularly hard time getting enough sleep, and what adults need to do to help. First, a reminder of the basic biology: Adolescents are no longer the morning larks of their younger years. They become rewired as night owls, staying awake later and then sleeping in. This is mostly driven by changes in the way the brain responds to light.
New technology habits aren't helping. More teenagers now turn to activities involving screens at night. The growth in screen time is particularly problematic for sleep. The blue light emitted by LEDs, TVs, tablets and smartphones suppresses the body's secretion (分泌) of melatonin, the hormone that signals it's time to sleep. Overdosing on screens at night effectively tells the brain it's still daytime, delaying the body's cues to sleep even further.
Parents should inform their kids of the time that can be spent on screens, and praise children who show signs of regulating their own media consumption. In the hour before bedtime, there should be a suspension on bright lights in the home, avoiding devices and harsh LED bulbs in kitchens and bathrooms.
In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8: 30 a. m., a policy now backed by the American Medical Association and many other health organizations.
Parents also need to join forces with community leaders, sleep scientists, health professionals and educators to put school start times on the local, then state agendas.
Whenever schools have managed the transition to a later start time, students get more sleep, attendance goes up, grades improve and there is a significant reduction in car accidents.

In the mornings, many are forced to get to school much too early"以及第二段"Three out of every four students in grades 9 to 12 fail to sleep the minimum of eight hours that the American Academy of Medicine recommends for their age group"可知,在早晨,许多人被迫提前上学。

所以通过"many ,Three out of every four students"可知,大多数学生睡眠不足。

In most cases, insufficient sleep results in reduced attention"可知,在大多数情况下,睡眠不足会导致注意力下降。

More alarmingly, sleep deprivation may lead to physical and emotional problems."

They become rewired as night owls, staying awake later and then sleeping in."

The blue light emitted by LEDs, TVs, tablets and smartphones suppresses the body's secretion (分泌) of melatonin, the hormone that signals it's time to sleep."
