The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt:“The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view? ”I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really terrible. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me at once. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.
“If you come by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.”
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so easy to agree to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.
“Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the a ssistant said.
“The artwork?” I was puzzled.
The chair went back, suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
What a relief!

Cell phones, tablets, and computers are keeping children and teenagers awake at night.
Researchers made many studies of children and teens aged 6 to 19. They found a “strong connection” between the use of technology at bedtime and poor sleeping. The reason is not just that kids are staying up too late with devices. Using a computer can stimulate the mind and feelings. The light from a smartphone or tablet affects the body’s natural functions and thus leads to poor quality sleep. And many kids could be at risk. According to the study, 72% of all children have at least one device in their sleep environment. Most of these devices are used near bedtime.
Many children get less sleep on school nights than they should. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids aged 6 to 13 should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep per night. Getting quality sleep is very important for learning difficult subjects like math or foreign languages.
The American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) advises kids to stop looking at screens at least half an hour before bedtime. This helps your brain slow down and gets your body ready for sleep. The AAP says bedrooms should be “screen-free zones”
If you want to pick up an electronic device at bedtime, try the following activities instead:
·Keep a journal: Thoughts and worries can make you anxious at night. Writing thoughts on paper can clear the mind.
·Try a mind exercise: Close your eyes and count backward from 100.
·Just relax: Inhale(吸气) slowly and deeply, and then exhale. Sweet dreams!
38. Researchers found that the reasons for children’s poor quality sleep include the following
except___.

C. being affected by the light from devices
D. having devices in the sleep environment

B. Children who get quality sleep do well in math learning.
C. Keeping diaries is a good way to clear your mind before bedtime.
D. Breathing heavily can lead to children’s good quality s leep.
41. The best title for this passage is ________.
A. Sweet dreams
B. technology and sleep

They tell us when to get up or when we’re running late for work and whether we are in danger of missing our favorite TV program. But while our daily activities rely on clocks that tell us the time, science is discovering that our well-being is influenced by a very different kind of timepiece. Circadian rhythms---the human body’s own internal(体内的) clock---have a powerful influence on our health and behavior. They are programmed from birth and control functions ranging from temperature and blood pressure to sleep patterns.
In recent years researchers have also discovered that this built-in mechanism(内在机制)can influence everything from the way we react to medicines to how well we learn music.
The latest example, from experts at Harvard University in the US, shows that the human body clock can even influence whether or not we are likely to tell the truth. Researchers found it was easier for people to tell lies in the afternoon because, as they were tired, the self control that would normally prevent them from lying started to break down. Tiredness made it easier for them to tell lies---especially if it meant they got a financial reward at the end.
“The body clock has a great effect on us all,” says Professor Jim Horne from the Sleep
Research Centre at Loughborough University. “Most people tend to feel good around late morning and then decline in the early afternoon. But the time most of us will feel our sharpest is between 6 pm and 8 pm. That’s because sleepiness tends to build up throughout the day. By early evening our body clock kicks in to wake us up. One reason may be to ensure we get home safely. When our ancestors(祖先) were coming home after hunting all day their internal clocks kicked in to get them home in one piece.”
So what effects do circadian rhythms have and what’s the best time of day to take advantage of them?
42. The underlined word “They” in the first para graph refers to .
A. our health and behaviour
B. scientists and experts
C. our daily routines
D. circadian rhythms
43. The research referred to in Paragraph 3 found that people tend to .
A. tell lies when they are tired
B. tell lies if they are rewarded
C. get angry as they become tired
D. break down because they are tired
44. According to the passage, when are people most quick-thinking?
A. In the morning.
B. Around midday.
C. In the late afternoon.
D. In the early evening.
45. What information will the writer probably present following the last paragraph?
A. Some practical suggestions to prevent people from lying.
B. Examples of how the human body clocks control the body.
C. Examples of the most suitable time to do different activities.
D. An explanation of how the human body clock controls the body.

七、阅读与回答问题。
(本题5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Once again, I argued with my son, which I never really wanted to do. When I told my friend about my problems with Paul, he showed me a short article that he had read. It was titled “Disagreeing, with Good Results”.
The article said that understanding another person is never easy, but it is most difficult when we do not agree with the other person. If we want to have good relationships with other people, we must learn to disagree fairly, so that we can solve our problems.
The article went on to say the first rule for a good disagreement is: we must want to solve the problem. Sometimes when people argue, they do not really want to end the disagreement. Therefore, they usually shout at each other, and one person walks away just to end the disagreement. Nothing is changed. The problem is still there.
The second rule is: we should make the problem clear in the simplest way possible. What exactly are we arguing about?
The third rule is: we need to listen actively. In active listening, we listen to understand what the other person says rather than thinking only about what we want to say next. Before we react to the other person’s ideas, we should be sure that we understand them. While we are listening, we should look for similarities in our ideas, not difference. We should look for a way to compromise—to find a solution that both of us can be happy with.
76. What’s the name of the writer’s son?
