Why would humans evolve(进化) a21 that puts us at a social disadvantage by 22 us to reveal that we have cheated or lied?Charles Darwin pointed out that 23 all people of all races blush, animals do not. When it came to explaining the reason, he was 24 a loss. That has not stopped others from trying. One 25 is that blushing started out as a way to show we obey authoritative members of the group. Later, as our social interactions became 26 complex, it became involved with higher, self-conscious 27 such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. This would seem to put individuals ata disadvantage, but blushing might actually make a person more 28 or socially desirable.29 that women blush more than men,one university researcher suggests that blushing might have evolved as a way for women to 30 their honesty to men so as to win their support in raising children. Some zoologists also think blushing could have emerged as a way to foster trust. " If you were to go hunting 31 a stone-faced partner, you could never 32 what he wants. “he says.Once blushing became 33 with embarrassment, anyone who did not blush might have been at a disadvantage because we are 34 likely to trust someone who appears never to feel 35 about anything.21. On Midsummer's Eve, which was a Saturday, Mr. Jones went into Willington and got so drunk at the Red Lion that he did not come back until midday on Sunday. His men had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out chatting without bothering to feed the animals. When Mr. Jones got back, he immediately went to sleep on the living-room sofa with the "News of the World" over his face. When evening came, the animals were still not fed. At last, they could stand no longer. One of the cows broke into the door of the storehouse with her horns and all the animals began to help themselves to the grains. It was just then that Mr. Jones woke up. The next moment he and his four men were in the storehouse with whips in their hands, whipping in all directions. This was more than the hungry animals would bear. Together, though nothing of the kind had been planned beforehand, they jumped upon their masters. Mr. Jones and his men suddenly found themselves being struck with the horns and kicked from all sides. The situation was quite out of their control. They had never seen these animals act like this before. This sudden rebellion of the creatures, which they were used to beating and whipping just as they chose, frightened them. After only a moment or two, they gave up trying to defend themselves. We can learn from the passage that______.A. the cows often ran out to look for foodB. the cows often had fights with their mastersC. Mr. Jones and his men often beat the cowsD. Mr. Jones and his men often forgot to feed the cowsPassage TwoIt was sunrise on an August morning when the captain and his crew cast their nets some 50 miles south of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. As the net was pulled over, the contents poured out followed by excited cries of "Coins! Coins!" The fishermen quickly realized they had realized a fisherman's dream: sunken treasure! And not just any treasure, but early American silver dollars thathad gone down 210 years earlier. In 1784, at the end of the American Revolutionary War, a heavily armed ship was bound for the port of New Orleans. On board was a fortune in Spanish Silver Dollars. Hundreds of thousands of them were loaded for the trip to New Orleans, yet not a single one arrived. With no survivors from the ill-fated voyage, historians can only guess at what happened. Some say powerful storms took her down while others speculate it was treasure-hungry pirates(海盗). Whatever happened, the secret-along with a treasure valued near $100,000,000 in today' s dollars-was sent to a watery grave some 300 feet below the ocean's surface.Spanish Silver Dollars were the favorite coins of colonial Americans. Widely used and accepted as payment in the thirteen colonies, the United States government gave them the status of official legal tender. Unfortunately, even though they were struck in large quantities, not many of them survive today. After the Civil War, the government withdrew them from circulation and they were melted down.Due to the historic discovery of this treasure, GovMint . com is releasing these coins to the public for an amazingly low price. For a limited time, those authentic silver dollars are priced at $49 plus shipping and handling—a dramatic reduction from the market price of this coin anywhere else worldwide.40. They found some pieces of a sunken ship in the net.D. Their net suddenly got caught by something deep in the water.41. What happened to the ship heading for New Orleans in 1784?A. In which section of a magazine would you probably find this article?A. Sports.B. Housing.C. History.D. Fashion.Passage ThreeThe environment affects the way people interact. To examine this conclusion, two researchers "decorated" three rooms: One room was refurnished to look ugly. The second room was intended to look average. The third room was designed to be beautiful. Individuals were then asked to sit in one of the three rooms and rate several pictures of people's faces. The results indicated that the environment has a significant effect on the way people rated the faces. Subjects in the beautiful room gave the pictures higher rates than did subjects in the ugly room. In addition, subjects in the ugly room found the task more unpleasant and boring than did subjects in the beautiful room. Subjects assigned to the ugly room attempted to leave sooner than did subjects assigned to the beautiful room.Color is one environmental factor that can affect your mood and even your ability to concentrate. One researcher concluded that the most pleasant colors, listed in order of preference, were blue, green, purple, red and yellow. The colors listed from most to least arousing were red, orange, yellow, violet, blue, and green.Lighting also affects behavior. Elegant restaurants with dim lighting create a mood of intimacy(亲密)that encourages conversation. The bright lights of an office or classroom, on the other hand, arouse and stimulate thinking.Room decoration, color, lighting, and even music and temperature all influence communication with others; but there is no all-purpose environment. The ideal environment depends on the task that will be performed as well as on the needs and expectations of those present. The same environmental factors that encourage lively conversation and dancing at a New Year's Eve party cannot be expected to create a serene climate in which to study for final exams.44. The underlined word "serene" in the last sentence is closest in meaning to______.A. serious and graveB. calm and peacefulC. pleasant and friendlyD. cold and indifferentPassage FourThere is nothing more possible than a new hip or knee that can put the spring back in your step. Patients receiving joint implants(移植)often are able to resume many of the physical activities they love, even those as vigorous as tennis and hiking. No wonder, then, that joint replacement is growing in popularity. In the United States in 2007, surgeons performed about 806, 000 hip and knee implants (the joints most commonly replaced), double the number performed a decade earlier. Though these procedures have become routine, they are not failure free.Implants must sometimes be replaced, said Dr. Henrik Malchau , an orthopaedic surgeon (矫形外科医生) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A study published in 2007 found that 7 percent of hips implanted in Medicare patients had to be replaced within seven and a half years. The percentage may sound low, but the finding suggests that thousands of hip patients eventually require a second operation, said Dr. Malchau. Those patients must endure additional recoveries, often painful, and increased medical expenses. The failure rate should be lower, many experts-agree. Sweden, for instance, has a failure rate estimated to be a third of that in the United States. Sweden also has a national joint replacement registry, a database of information from which surgeons can learn how and why certain procedures go wrong. A registry also helps surgeons learn quickly whether a specific type of implant is particularly problematic. "Every country that has developed a registry has been able to reduce failure ratesSignificantly," said Dr. Daniel Berry, chief of orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.A newly formed American Joint Replacement Registry will begin gathering data from hospitals in the next 12 to 18 months. It's good news for those who are considering replacing a knee or hip.48. What is the problem with hip or knee replacements in the U. S. ?A. A lot of patients need a second operation.B. Doctors are not well trained to ensure successful operations.C. Demands for hip replacement exceed the number of surgeons.D. Replacement operation is becoming too expensive in U. S. hospitals.49. People who need a new knee or hip would possibly feel_____. about data gathering in the U. S.A. indifferentB. assuredC. puzzledD. hopefulPassage FiveThe Saturday Evening Post "became symbolic of the reading fare of middle-class America". In 1897 Curtis began to revive (重振) the Post on the proposition that a man's chief interest in life is the fight for .livelihood-business. Fiction and articles about romantic business and successful businessmen filled its pages, and products backed by .its advertisements directed at the needs and desires of the business world. The general interest weekly reached new audiences. Its conservative viewpoint and strong admiration for material success appealed to the tastes of the millions who settled in an easy chair with it each Thursday evening. As a more commercial, mass-circulation magazine than The New Yorker, the widely readable Post set out to interpret America to itself. As a national and international institution, The Saturday Evening Post made its mark in the lives of massive numbers of men and women, and served society as a stabilizing influence. Its editorial matter addressed the problems and interests of the readers as never before. Neither highbrow nor lowbrow, the Post set out to interpret average middle-class America, for that was its audience. However, this magazine lost touch with the mood of the American people in the 1930s. The Post's editor Lorimer, opposed Roosevelt and the New Deal and changed his magazine from an organ of entertainment and enlightenment into a weapon of political warfare. He believed that in opposing the New Deal he had spoken for the majority of voters, but the 1936 election proved him wrong. His conservatism extended beyond politics, it dominated the m agazine’s content and style causing a decline in reputation and authority. The Post met its greatest success when it went beyond the tastes of the masses, challenging its readers to acknowledge the genius of contributors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and William Faulkner. It was later reformed in an effort to fulfill its responsibility to awaken lethargic(昏昏欲睡的)America, however, The Saturday Evening Post seemed to play toconventions while The New Yorker took off to redefine the character of American Humor.52. According to Paragraph 1, who are primarily the readers of the Post?A. Businessmen.B. College students.C. Housewives.D. Politicians.53. What is the earliest time that readers can read the Post every week?A. Monday.B. Thursday.C. Saturday.D. Sunday.54. Why did the Post lose much of its audience in the 1930's?A. It changed its original style and was heavily involved in politics.B. Readers couldn't afford a newspaper because of the Depression.C. The new editor was not interested in Roosevelt's politics.D. It failed to absorb sufficient advertisements.55. What makes the Post so commercially successful?A. Presenting American style humor.B. Sticking to the tastes of the middle class.C. Carrying articles and novels by local writers.D. Staying in close contact with the business world.V. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:I was born in the city of York, in England, in the year 1632. My father was a man of some wealth, able to give me a good home and send me to school. It was his wish that I should be a lawyer but my head began to be filled very early with thoughts of travel, and I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea. My father gave me strong advice against it, but with little effect. One day, being at Hull, I met a school-fellow who was about to sail for London in his father's ship, and he invited me to go with him, and without telling my father, I went on board. On the way to London, a storm arose, the ship was wrecked (失事), and we barely escaped with our lives. I went on foot to London, where I met with the master of a vessel which did business with countries on the coast of Africa. He took a fancy to me, and offered me a chance to go with him on his voyages, which I gladly accepted.A great storm came up, and the ship was tossed (被颠簸) about for many days, until we did not know where we were. Suddenly we struck a bank of sand, and the sea broke over the ship in such a way that we could not hope to have her hold many moments without breaking into pieces. So we launched (使…下水)a boat. After we had been driven four or five miles,a mountainous wave struck us so hard that it overturned the boat at once.Though I swam well but the waves were so strong that I was dashed (被猛撞) against a rock with such force that it left me senseless. But I recovered a little before the waves returned, and, running forward, got to the mainland safely.1. What did the author want to do most when he was young ? A) To visit Africa. When the author finally arrived on land, he most probably ______ A) knew he was in Africa B) did not know where he wasC) was not aware he was back in EnglandD) got in touch with his family and asked for helpPassage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Although Thomas Jefferson did not begin the effort of designing the系 专业 准考证号 姓名 考场University of Virginia until late in his life, the education of the common man had occupied his thoughts for decades. He believed ignorance (无知) to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weaknesses of educational institutions (机构) modeled on European settings. He imagined that an "academical village" around a tree-lined lawn would provide an ideal setting in which to pursue higher education, the center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818, the retired U.S. President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin buliding his 'academical village," the University of Virginia. in Charlottesville, V A, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students. The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church. Jefferson revo-lutionized American university architecture.Jefferson's aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his ,daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors' houses and students' classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students' whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students' dining, living, and exercise facilities (设施).6. Jefferson devoted much of his thought to the education of the common man because he believed _______.A) everyone who loved freedom hated ignoranceB) a country could not be strong without educationC) an uneducated man could not gain full freedomD) European educational institutions did not suit America7. According to Jefferson, the center of a university should be ______.A) the churchB) the libraryC) the lawnD) the classrooms8. Jefferson chose to locate the University of Virginia far away from the citycenter because_______.A) land in the city center could not be foundB) there was a tree-lined lawn thereC) this was a European traditionD) there was no distraction for the students9. In Jefferson's view, an ideal educational system should_______.A) be one under which every citizen enjoys equal opportunityB) give everyone the information he needs for conducting his businessC) ensure that everyone has a chance to enter an institution of higher learningD) provide students with a natural and unspoiled setting for learning10. What was made easy by the revolutionized American campus?A) Students' learning.B) Intellectual exchange.C) Professors' teaching.D) Both students' and professors' lifePassage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 ore based on the following passage:The good news we get from TV and radio makes us feel more kindly toward other people, but bad news—especially news of cruelty and violence —stirs upsuspicion and a sense of competition toward others. These are the findings of 10 years of experiments by research psychologists (心理学家) at Columbia University, who conclude that broadcasters encouragehostile (敌对的) behavior by stressing bad news."We found that the news people are exposed to either encourages them to concentrate on the differences between themselves and others, or on the common第2 页共5 页problems that make them feel, 'We're all in this together,'" explained Dr. Harvey Hornstein."News about one human being helping another ... brings our feelings of trust and cooperation. But news about one person actually doing harm to another changes our estimate of other people for the worse."In an early experiment in 1968, Dr. Hornstein and his associates, who had been dropping wallets (钱包) for two years to test the honesty of people, discovered that on June 4, 1968, not one wallet was returned."That was the night Robert F. Kennedy was shot," he recalled. "Strangers suddenly seemed dangerous, and nobody wanted to return a lost wallet to a stranger."But good news on the other hand, lifts us up," he stressed, citing the date of July 4, 1976, America's Bicentennial (两百年的) celebration. "On that day, we all felt safe and good. Being American was the thing. We all felt as if we all belonged together."Recent tests surport these conclusions, in one experiment, 60 subjects were exposed to good news, bad news or music. Then they were told to play a game with a non-existent person supposedly in another room. it was a game of choice that emphasized cooperation or competition. After hearing good news, the overwhelming majority, 91 percent, played cooperatively. But after hearing bad news competitive responses were over three times as high — up to 28 percent, from 9 percent."if we watch television and see a lot of blood," said Dr. Hornstein, "we're probably assuming that the world is a dirtier place than we assumed before we saw that TV violence. And we'll deal with the next individual we come upon as if he is part of that grim (冷酷的) picture of humanity. After the good news, it's the reverse."11. According to the findings of researchers at Columbia University, when people hear good news, they feel_______.A) happierB) more kindly toward othersC) safer than they really areD) more competitive12. Dr. Harvey Hornstein found that when people hear news about one personactually doing harm to another, they tend to _______.A) regard other people as worse than they really areB) treat total strangers as suspects of cruel crimesC) become hostile towards neighbors and friendsD) think about the common problems facing mankind13. What did Dr. Harvey Hornstein and his associates discover on the night ofJune 4, 1968?A) Robert F. Kennedy was shot.B) Their wallets were lost.C) People in America suddenly became dishonest.D) Nobody returned the wallets they dropped.14. We can infer from the passage that on July 4, 1976, most probably _______.A) people drank and sang and dancedB) lost wallets were returned to their ownersC) everybody wanted to be AmericanD) even criminals were friendly to others15. We can conclude from the passage that .A) violence on TV leads to more violence on the streetsB) broadcasters should emphasize good news rather than bad newsC) the world is a dirtier place than we assume it to beD) people are more competitive when they are faced with challengesPassage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on following passage:A study suggests that dirty air can reduce lung development. Researchers atthe University of Southern California in Los Angeles published their work in theNew England Journal of Medicine.About one thousand seven hundred children from different communities in Southern California took part in the study. The scientists tested the children everyyear for eight years, starting at age ten They say this is the longest study everdone on air pollution and the health of children. The scientists found that children who lived in areas with the dirtiest air wire five times more likely to grow up with weak lungs. Many were using less thaneighty percent of normal lung strength, to breathe.第3 页共5 页The damage from dirty air was as bad as that found in children with parents who smoke. Children with reduced lung power may suffer more severe effects from a common cold, for example. But the researchers express greater concerns about long-time effects. They say adults normally begin to lose one percent of their lung power each year after age twenty. The doctors note that weak lung activity is the second leading cause of early deaths among adults. The first is smoking.By the time people are eighteen, their lungs are fully developed, or close to it. The doctors say it is impossible to recover from any damage.Researchers say they are still not sure how air pollution affects lung development. They believe that pollution affects the tiny air spaces where oxygen and carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)are exchanged.Arden Pope is an economics professor at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Professor Pope wrote a commentary about the study. He noted that air quality in Southern California has improved since the study began in the early nineteen-nineties. Clean-air laws have reduced pollution from vehicles, industry and other causes. But dirty air is still a problem in areas of California and other places. Professor Pope says continued efforts to improve air quality are likely to provide additional improvements in health.16. A study done by researchers at the University of Southern California indicates that _______.A) 1,700 children from Southern California have weak lung activitiesB) children in Southern California use less lung strength to breatheC) air pollution may affect the growth of children's lungsD) 80 percent of children in Southern California suffer from air pollution17. According to the article, children living in dirty airA) may lose eighty percent of their normal lung strengthB) may suffer more severe effects from a common coldC) were five times more likely to catch a common coldD) were unlikely to recover from any lung damage18. Why do the researchers express greater concern about the long-term effects of air pollution on children?A) They begin to lose 1% of their lung power each year after 20.B) They do not show any signs of lung damage when they are young.C) They may suffer early death when they grow up.D) They cannot expect to have their lungs fully developed at 18.19. What do we learn from the passage about the air in Southern California?A) It is unlikely to improve in the near future.B) It is free of pollution from vehicles and industry.C) It is as dirty as it was before.D) It is cleaner than it was in the early 1990s.20. Professor Pope believes thatA) improvement in air quality will provide further health benefitsB) clean-air laws should be passed to reduce air pollution in CaliforniaC) further studies should be done to find out how dirty air affects lung developmentD) air pollution does even greater harm to children's health than their parents' smoking二、Vocabulary and Structure (20 Points)Directions: There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part. This type of sleep generally occurs four or five times during one night of sleep, lasting five minutes to forty minutes for each occurrence. The deeper a person's sleep becomes, the longer the periods of rapid eye movement. There are physical changes in the body to show that a person has changed fromNREM(non-rapid eye movement) to REM sleep. Breathing becomes faster, the heart rate increases, and, as the name implies, the eyes begin to move quickly.Accompanying these physical changes in the body is a very important characteristic of REM sleep. It is during REM sleep that a person dreams.61. According to the passage, how often does REM sleep occur in one night?A. OnceB. TwiceC. Four or five timesD. Forty times62. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keeptheir numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突) between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.66. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes _____.A. for recreationB. to limit the fox populationC. in the interests of the farmersD. to show off their wealth67. Should a woman who works at home, doing the housework and caring for children, be paid for her services? In a 1986 study at Cornell University, it was found that the value of the services of a housewife averaged $11.600 a year. This rate was based on a famimy composed of a husband, wife, and three young children. The $11.600 is what the husband would have to pay if he hired others to take over his wife’s household work. The researchers concluded that it would be fair for husband to pay wives according to government guidelines for the least amount of wages.Another plan for rewarding women who work at home has been suggested by Dr.Johnson, a former secretary of Health and Human Services. He says that full-time housewives should be allowed to pay social security taxes, with their employer ( that is their husbands) offeri ng part of the payment. He feels the present system is unfair. Non-smokers often breathe in the smoke from other people’s cigarettes. This i s second-hand smoke. The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency reports that about fifty-three thousand people die in the United States each year as a result of exposure to second-hand smoke. It is harder for children to avoid second-hand smoke. In the United States, nine million children under the age of five live in homes with at least one smoker. Research shows thatthese children are sick more often than children who live in homes where no one smokers. The damaging effects of second-hand smoke on children also continue as they grow up. The children of smokers are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer when they are adults as children of non-smokers. The risk is even higher for children who live in homes where both parents smoke.People are becoming very aware of the danger of second-hand smoke. As a result, they have passed laws that prohibit people from smoking in many public places. Currently, 45 states in the United States have laws that restrict, or limit smoking. Reading Comprehension (38 points)Passage 1Clearly if we are to participle in the society in which we live we must communicate with other people. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech. If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become of one of the dominating factors of contemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programme that is being channeled into millions of homes. Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining.Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.1. In the first paragraph the writer emphasizes the _________ of face-to-face contact in social settings.A natureB limitationC usefulnessD creativity2. It is implied in the passage that_______A local news used to be the only source of informationB local news still takes a significant placeC national news is becoming more popularD international news is the fastest transmitted news3. which of the following statement is INCORRECT?A To possess information used to be a privilegeB Public libraries have replaced private librariesC Communication means more than transmissionD Information influences ways of life and thinking4.From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is________.A indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaPassage 2I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream? Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window issky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous—cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitantsof small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the existing and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on and expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two; they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind — they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they pass by? I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby, I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass, I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.5. We get the impression from the first paragraph that the authorA used to live in the countryB used to work in the cityC works in the cityD lives in the country6. In the author’s opinion, the following may cause city people to be unhappy EXCEPTA a strong sense of fearB lack of communicationC housing conditionsD a sense of isolation7. Do you think the author will move to the country?A Yes, he will do soB No, he will not do soC It is difficult to tellD He is in two mindsPassage 3Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education todayis not just a high school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.10. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successfully. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before. We should be able to clone the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia. This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer.Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.15.Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by___________.A removing the damaged part of the heartB replacing the old heart with a cloned oneC repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy onesD giving the patients injections of various medicines16. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and DYour should make the correct choice and write the corresponding letter on the AnswerSheetTask 1Though it is merely 1 to 3 percent of the population, the upper class possesses at least 25 percent of the nation’s wealth. This has two segments: upper-upper and lower-upper. Basically, the upper-upper class is the “old rich”-families that have been wealthy for several generations-an aristocracy of birth and wealth. “There names are in the Social Register, a listing of acceptable members of high society. A few are known across the nation, such as the Roosevelts, and Vanderbilts. Most are not visible to the general public. They live in grand life, drawing their income from the investment of their inherited wealth. In contrast, the lower-upper class is the “ new rich”. Although they may be wealthier than some of the old rich, the new rich have hustled (努力) to make their money like everybody else beneath their class. Thus their prestige is generally lower than that of the old rich, who have not found it necessary to lift a finger to make their money, and who tend to look down upon the new rich. However its wealth is acquired, the upper class is very rich. They have enough money and leisure time to cultivate an interest in the arts and to collect rare books, painting , and sculpture. They generally live in exclusive areas, belong to exclusive social clubs, communicate with each other, and marry their own kind-all of which keeps them so distant from the masses that they have been called the out-of-sight class. More than any other class, they tend to be conscious of being members of a class. They also command an enormous amount of power and influence here and abroad, as they hold many top government positions, run the Council on Foreign Relations and control multinational corporations. Their actions affect the lives of millions.46. All the following statements are true except that _____________.A. the upper class owns at least a quarter of the country’s wealthB. the “old rich” enjoy higher prestige than the “new rich”C. the “old rich” isolate themselves and lead a lonely lifeD. the upper-upper class is of aristocratic origin47. The “old rich” get richer_________________.A. through the Social RegisterB. by investing their inherited wealthC. through their reputationD. by collecting painting and sculptures48. The reason why the “old rich” look down upon the “new rich” is that_____.A. the former are wealthier than the latterB. the latter sweat themselves to make moneyC. the “old rich” are conscious of being members of the upper classD. the “new rich” have no interest in arts49. The upper class is also called the out-of-sight class because________.A. they don’t communicate with any peopleB. they spend most of their time abroadC. they move frequently from the general publicD. they keep away from the general public50. We can learn from the passage that ________________.A. the upper class is powerful and influentialB. the upper class collects rare books to make moneyC. the “old rich” make much more money than the “new rich”D. the upper class holds all top government positionsTask 2We all know that DNA has the ability to identify individuals but, because it is inherited, there are also regions of the DNA strand which can relate an individual to his or her family ( immediate and extended), tribal group and even an entire population. Molecular Genealogy(宗谱学)can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees. Pedigrees(家谱)based on such genetic markers can mean a breakthrough for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. There are many communities and populations which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place. The main objective of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000DNA samples from individuals all over the world. There individuals will have provided a pedigree chart of at lest four generations and a small blood sample. Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make-up, it will eventually help in solving many issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records. Theoretically, any individual will someday be able to trace his or her family origins through this database. In the meantime, as the database is being created, molecular genealogy can already verify possible or suspected relationships between individuals. “For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but no written record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarily at the Y chromosome(染色体),”explains Ugo Perego, a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team.51. People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread because_____________.A. DNA is characteristic of a regionB. they are beyond doubt of common ancestryC. DNA strand has the ability to identify individualsD. their unique identification can be provided via DNA52. The possible research of family trees is based on the fact that______.A. genetics has achieved a breakthroughB. genetic information contained in DNA can be revealed nowC. each individual carries a unique record of who he is and how he is related to othersD. We can use DNA to prove how distant an individual is to a family , a group or a population53. The Molecular Genealogy Research Group is building a database for the purpose of _______________.A. offering assistance in working out genealogy-related problemsB. solving many issues without relying on traditional written recordsC. providing a pedigree chart of at least four generations in the worldD. confirming the assumption that all individuals are of the same origin54. If two men suspected for some reason they have a common ancestor,____.A. we can decide according to their family treeB. we can find the truth from their genetic markersC. we can compare the differences in their Y chromosomeD. we can look for written records to prove their relationship55. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?A. We are a walking, living, breathing record of our ancestors.B. Many American slaves did not know who their ancestors were.C. An adopted child generally lacks enough information to prove his identity.D. Molecular genealogy can be used to prove a relationship between individuals.Task 3Over two hundred years ago, Adam Smith introduced some ideas which brought about a world revolution. If we enjoy a high standard of modern society, we owe much to this Scottish economist and philosopher. If we enjoy driving in beautiful cars, wearing fashionable shoes, or flying away to distant places for exciting holidays, we should perhaps pay thanks to the man who made it all possible. What was Adam Smith’s contribution? Like so many ideas which have surprising effects, his was a simple one. He watched workers practicing their craft of pin making. One man would heat the strip of metal, stretch it out , cut off an appropriate length, shape it, cool it and finally smooth and shine it. Smith drew attention to the advantage which could be gained if these various tasks were performed by different workers. Let one be responsible for preparing the metal, another for stretching and cutting, another for shaping, and another for finishing. He described the technique as the Division of Labor; in this way workers repeat the same actions again and again. Smith convinced the world that specialization could solve the problem of poverty and want. What was the result? The Industrial Revolution. Productivity was greatly increased. For Britain, where the revolution started, there was a prosperity which made it the richest country in the 19th century. British trains and railway lines spread out like a spider’s web across the world. British ships are used to carry the cargoes the new cargoes from one corner of the world to another. The revolution is not over. It is still with us, but now it is a worldwide phenomenon. Everywhere, factories are producing large numbers of similar products, and are in continuous production. What were called mass-production lines yesterday are called robotic productions today. The pace of change is increasing. And if these techniques have brought us prosperity, they have also brought us a little misery in overcrowded towns, boring jobs and, most of all, unemployment.56. We should be granted to Adam Smith because____________.A. his ideas made it possible for people to improve their livesB. he invented a more efficient way of pin makingC. he started the industrial revolutionD. he brought to people a high standard of living57. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. The Division of Labor makes work more interestingB. Specialization could solve the problem of unemploymentC. From the passage we know that the Industrial Revolution________.A. led to Adam Smith’s idea of specializationB. was finished in the 19th centuryC. also has its side-effects in societyD. put an end to poverty in the world59. According to the passage we know that the Industrial Revolution is responsible for the following results except_______.A. prosperityB. crimeC. unemploymentD. over-crowdedness60. What is the best title for this passage?A. The Theory of Division of Labor and Its SignificanceB. The Industrial Revolution and Its SignificanceC. The Causes of Industrial RevolutionD. If a group of researchers in India are successful, the next earthquake might not be as destructive. British and Indian engineers are developing earthquake-proof housing using a cheap, universal material in India: bamboo. They designed a model house built around waterproof of bamboo-sheet roofing and bamboo reinforced concrete walls. To test the structure, the engineers, sponsored by the U.K. Department of International Development, took it to the Earthquake Department and Vibration Research Center in Bangalore, which has an advanced earthquake simulator. The researchers shook the house with five successive 30-second pulses, being equal to 7.8 on the Richter scale. The simulation was more than 10 times as violent as the Barn earthquake, yet the house they designed was undamaged. “We didn’t even crack the paint,” says engineer Paul Follett, of Britan’s Timber Research and Development Association.By some estimates, more than a billion people already live in bamboo structures. The innova tion lies in develop ways to exploit bamboo’s spring. Easily pre-built, fire resistant, and far lighter than steel, bamboo based structure could be assembled in three weeks and last 50 years. At 5 dollars a square foot, they would last about half as much as brick-and-block constructions. Follett says the project will follow an “open source ” model:“Whatever is developed is freely available for the common good.”61. Why thousands of houses collapsed in the Barn earthquake? Those houses collapsed mainly because they were _________________________.62. What does the phrase “a universal material in India” refer to?It is a material that can be found ______________________________________.63. Each passage is followed by some questions of unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A B C D .you should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer sheet with asingle line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 21to 25 are based on the following passage.Who take cares of the elderly in the United States today? Many people wrongly believe that when people reach old age, their families place them in the hands of strangers for the rest of their lives, their grown children visit tem only occasionally, but more often, they do not have any regular visitors. The truth is that this idea is an unfortunate made-up story. In fact, family members provide over 80 percent of the care that the elderly people need.Because Americans are living longer than ever, more social workers have begun to study care-giving to improve care of the elderly. They have found that all caregivers share something in common: all caregivers believe that they are the best person for the job. One caregiver said that she had always been close to her mother. Another was the oldest child. In other words, they all felt that they could do the job better than anyone else. Social workers interviewed caregivers to find out why they took on the responsibility of caring for the elderly. They discovered three basic reasons.
