Starting out
In general counseling with students who suffer from acne or weight problems, I often ask about _d_ri_n_k__co_n_s_u_m__p_ti_o_n__. A number of even bright students do not realize that soft drinks are more or less __li_q_u_id__s_u_g_ar__. These students are often less than fully aware that many popular (and hefty) "tea" or "coffee" drinks may be laced with _u_n_h_e_a_lt_h_y_a_g_e_n_ts to promote flavor. We need to remember too that not all fruit juices are created equal. Some purported juices are filled with additives that offer __c_o_lo_r_a_n_d__c_al_o_r_ie_s__, but nothing of health value. Any piece of fresh fruit is a wiser health choice than a fruit drink that comes in a paper or _p_l_a_s_ti_c_c_o_n_t_ai_n_e_r___, and drinking plain tea or water is a much healthier way to quench one's thirst.

Text A Learn By Touch

Overview
Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication. Humans acquire language through social interaction in early childhood. But some people may suffer from speech impairment; despite the success of the disability rights movement and the recognition that signing is no less a linguistic system than spoken language, “dumb” is still used as a term of abuse.

Overview
Text A is excerpted from The Story of My Life, Helen Keller’s autobiography. It portrays the wild child who is locked in the dark and silent prison of her own body. Keller reveals her frustration and rage, and takes the reader on the unforgettable journey of her education and breakthroughs into the world of communication. From the moment Keller recognizes the word “water” when her teacher finger spells the letters, we share her triumph as “that living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free!” She learned to “hear” people’s speech by reading their lips with her hands; her sense of touch had become extremely supple. She became proficient at using Braille and reading sign language with her hands as well.

Dear John,
I used to live a life just like yours. I can see myself in you when I finished my college and started my first job. I found a job as junior reporter for Chicago Daily so I moved from Houston to Chicago. I was working 18 hours a day in a place where I knew few people. My health finally broke down from too much work and poor diet. I stayed in hospital for two weeks. My parents came to Chicago and took care of me. After I was out of hospital, I quitted my job and moved back to Houston, where I found a job in a local newspaper. I visited my parents often and I had time to hang around with my friends whom I had known for years as well as those I newly made. I felt happy finally.
