Scientists have reason to believe that treesdo communicate (交际) with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in wor ds. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?11. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no limits. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or in a theatre. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a respected grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy(婴儿期)on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong(一生的)process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral(基本的)part of one's entire life.Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned(指定的)seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are words or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subjectbeing taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.16. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. School is the place where people get informal educationB. Education means schoolingC. Education can be both formal and informalD. Going to school is the only way to receive education17. Education is different from schooling in that ______.A. the former is predictable while the latter is notB. the former is specific while the latter is notC. the former is a formalized process while the latter is notD. the former is more open-ended and all-inclusive than the latter18. When does education begin?A. Before one enters schoolB. After one enters schoolC. After one graduates from collegeD. After one retires from work19. The fact that children arrive at school at about the same time shows that ______.A. schooling imposes a lot of strain on the studentsB. schooling has a clear boundaryC. schooling follows more or less the same pattern.D. schooling includes different aspects of learning20. What is the author's attitude toward schooling?A. PositiveB. NegativeC. Neutral(中立的)D. Supportive四.Translation—English to Chinese英译汉(5*3’)1.If producers can substitute a cheaper foreign source of labor relative to thedomestic wage rate, many will choose to move their production overseas, creating increased unemployment.如果生产者可以用廉价的外国劳动力来替代国内资源,很多生产者将会选择把他们的生产转移至海外,从而造成失业率的上升。

Choose the correct title for each paragraph from the box below. For each paragraph (2-4) mark one letter (A-D) on your Answer Sheet. Do not mark any letter twice. The New LookWhen Sir John Quinton, then chairman of Barclays Bank, was given his marching orders last April, Britain's biggest bank thought it had found the scapegoat (替罪羊) for its sudden fall from grace and profits. Andrew Buxton, the bank's managing director and an offspring of its founding families, was a pointed chairman and chief executive, with effect from January 1st of next year. It seemed a glorious victory for good business management. Is the problem solve do certainly not.No sooner had Mr. Buxton been appointed chairman and chief executive than big shareholders and quite a few board members began quietly to question his ability to do both jobs at once. Now, weeks before he is due to move up, the questions are louder. Many wish the bank had seized the opportunity last April to separate the two top posts. And privately, some wonder whether Mr. Buxton is the right man for either one. What started as a thoroughly British Whispering Campaign has assumed much bigger dimensions.1. Mr. Buxton has suffered it all, but in truth he has no way out. After weeks of talking to shareholders and discussing with his non-executive directors, he has accepted that Barclays will separate the top jobs sometimes in the future. How? He says that there has been no formal discussion of it in the boardroom.2. Formally or informally, it has been agreed that Mr. Buxton will not be moved from his chairmanship, and that Barclays must find a strong chief executive. Opinions differ as to whether this person should be chosen from inside or outside the bank. Several board members believe that there is no ideal candidate inside Barclays.3. Neither shareholders nor non-executive directors want to wait long. If the right candidate can be found, the bank could combine the announcement of a new appointment with its annual results at the end of March. Mr. Buxton stressed the importance of getting this next step right, particularly since any appointment will mean overturning a management reorganization that was announced only eight months ago.18. Paragraph 1_____________19. Paragraph 2______________20. Paragraph 3______________A. Anxieties about choosing the right candidatesB. Proposals for candidates of the chief executiveC. Lack of ideal candidate inside BarclaysD. Buxton's agreement to give up one of his two top jobs Questions 21-25The expression benchmarking has become one of the fashionable words in current management discussion. The term first appeared in the United States in the 1970s but has now gained world wide recognition. But what exactly does it mean and should yourcompany be practicing it?One straightforward definition of benchmarking comes from Chris Tether managing director of a New Zealand-based consultancy firm specializing in this area. “Benchmarking involves learning about your own practices, learning about the best practices of others, and then making changes for improvement that will enable you to meet or beat the best in the world.” The essential element is not simply imitating what other companies do but being able to adapt the best of other firms’ practices to your own situation.Instead of aiming to improve only against previous performance and scores, companies can use benchmarking to inject an element of imagination and common sense into their search for progress. It is a process which forces companies to look closely at those activities which they may have been taking for granted and comparing them with the actives of other world-beating companies. Self-criticism is at the heart of the process although in some cases this may upset managers who are reluctant to question long established practices. The process of identifying best practice in other companiesdoes not just mean looking closely at your competitors. It might also include studying companies which use similar processes to your own, even though they are producing different goods. The point is to look at the process rather than the product. For example, Italian computer company Arita wanted to improve the quality of its technical manuals and handbooks. Instead of looking at manuals produced by other computer companies, Arita turned to a publisher of popular handbooks such as cookery books, railway timetables and car repair manuals. As Arita’s Technical Director Claudio Benclii says, “All of these handbooks are communicating complex information in a simple way - exactly what we are aiming to do. And in many cases they succeed far better than any computer company.”There is some disagreement between benchmarking specialists as to the best methods to follow when starting a benchmarking exercise in your firm. Everyone agrees that the process must have the full approval of senior management but that it is best carried out by a comparatively small team. Some consultants feel this should be as small as three people but most favor a team of between five and eight at least one of whomshould have some prior knowledge of the benchmarking process. In practice this often means bringing in an outside consultant at least at the beginning. Once the team is assembled there can be anything from three to five formal stages in the process different approaches but whatever the exact technique benchmarking can only work if everyone in the company from top to bottom is committed to change.21. According to the writer, benchmarking must always involve_____________.A. changing your activities on the basis of new informationB. copying exactly what your competitors doC. identifying the best company in your marketD. collaborating with other companies in the same field22. Some managers may resist benchmarking because____________.A. it takes their activities for grantedB. it makes them examine the way they workC. it makes others question their efficiencyD. it gives them a lot of extra work23. Anita found that a publishing company could__________.A. make more money than a computer firmB. producetechnical manuals for themC. show them how to improve their own manualsD. help them move into new markets24. Benchmarking specialists agree that in order to succeed there must be___________.A. a team of no more than three peopleB. total support from top managersC. a fixed timetable for the processD. an outside consultant it the team25. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this article?A. to recommend the process of benchmarkingB. to criticize firms that do not carry out benchmarkingC. to give tactual information about benchmarkingD. to explain why benchmarking does not suit every firm Questions 26–30The Negotiating TableYou can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes of negotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr. Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies tonegotiate on their behalf. He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial (对抗的). Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying “yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr. Cohen says that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relateto you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, for example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr. Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in; do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment andenergies have gone to waste. However, joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes, if this becomes too great, neither party may be prepared to see the deal through. More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.Dr. Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request, they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If all else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lessons to be learned from watching and listening to children.26. Dr. Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order to __________.A. put people at easeB. remain detached(超然的)C. be competitiveD. impress rivals27. Dr. Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you should_____________.A. adapt your style to the people you are talking toB. make the other side feel superior to youC. dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D. try to make the other side like you28. According to Dr. Cohen, understanding the other person will help you to___________.A. gain their friendshipB. speed up the negotiationsC. plan your next move.D. convince them of your point of view29. Deals sometimes fail because____________________.A. negotiations have gone on too longB. the companies operate in different waysC. one party risks more than the other.D. the lawyers work too slowly30. Dr. Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you should________.A. be prepared to try every routeB. try not to make people feel guiltyC. be careful not to exhaust yourselfD. control the decision-making process.Part III. This definition is simple, but the process is complex. Intercultural communication involves differing perceptions, attitudes, and interpretations. We know that even two people from the same culture can have communication problems. People can intentionally hurt each other by something they say or do. Isn’t it logical, then, that communication problems can be compounded among people who do not have the benefit of shared experiences (such as language and culture)?Cultures do not communicate; individuals do. Everyone has a unique style of communication, but cultures determine a general style of communication for their members. The relationship of the individual to his culture is analogous(类似的,相似的)to an actor and his director. The actor puts his own personality into his acting but is nevertheless influenced by the director. We are not always aware of the subtle influence of our culture. Likewise, we may not perceive that others are influenced by their cultures as well.Problems and misinterpretations do not result every time members from two cultures communicate. However, when cultural conflicts do arise, they may be perceived as personal rather than cultural. In the following example it is a cultural misunderstanding that create negative feelings and confusion:A young woman from one culture is looking out of the window and sees a male acquaintance from another culture. He signals to her by puckering(缩拢)his lips. She quickly looks away from the window. Later she ignores him. He is confused and she is angry. The misunderstanding was due to the woman’s failure to understand the man’s nonverbal signal. In her culture, his gesture conveys a sexual advance. According to his culture, he was only saying(nonverbally), “Oh, there you are. I’ve been looking for you.”The woman’s misinterpretation resulted in her angry reaction and his confusion. If the two had known more about each other’s nonverbal cues, they could have avoided the cultural conflict. Some misunderstandings are insignificant and can be easily ignored or remedied. Other conflicts are more serious in that they can cause misinterpretations and create persistent negative attitudes toward foreigners.Difficulties in intercultural communication arise when there is little or no awareness of divergent cultural values and beliefs. In cross-cultural interaction, speakers sometimes assume that what they believe is right, because they have grown up thinking their way is the best. This ethnocentric(种族中心主义的)assumption can result in negative judgments about other cultures. Another manifestation(表现)of ethnocentric attitudes is that people become critical of individuals from different cultures.Sometimes negative reactions do not result from actual interaction but rather from the fixed, preconceived beliefs we have about other people. These over generalized beliefs or “stereotypes”frequently shape people’s perceptions of each other.Stereotypes originate and develop from numerous sources such as jokes, textbooks, movies, and television. Movies about cowboys and Indians portray cowboys as “civilized” and Indians as wild and “primitive.” A child who knows about the American Indians only through watching these movies will have a distorted(扭曲的)and false image of this group of people. Stereotypes perpetuate inaccuracies about religious, racial and cultural groups.Stereotyped beliefs prevent us from seeing people as individual with unique characteristics. Negative stereotypes lead to prejudice: suspicion, intolerance, or hatred of other cultural groups.Cultural conflicts occur as a result of misinterpretations, ethnocentrism, stereotypes and prejudice. Preventing these conflicts is possible with increased awareness of our own attitudes as well as sensitivity to cross-cultural differences. Developing intercultural sensitivity does not mean that we need to lose our cultural identities—but rather that we recognize cultural influences within ourselves andwithin others.5. Which of the following is not involved in intercultural communication?A.Perceptions.B.Attitudes.C.Memories.D.Interpretations.6. The influence of a culture on the people is ______________.A.extremely obviousB.quite subtleC.most noticeableD.very little7.Sometimes a cultural conflict may be regarded as _____________.A.a difficult problemB. a confusing problemC. a group conflictD.a person-to-person conflict8. According to the passage, intercultural communication can be difficult because people from different cultures do not _________________.A.have the knowledge of foreign languagesB.have a foreign educational backgroundC.accept foreign ideasD.share similar cultural values and beliefs10. According to the passage, cultural conflicts can be prevented by ___________.A.losing one’s own cultural identityB.increasing people’s sensitivity to cross-cultural differencesC.learning something about foreign countriesD.removing traditional ideas from people’s mindsPart ⅢTranslate the following sentences into Chinese (5 points1.The T-shirt are duly packed and the packages are marked according to the buyer’sinstructions.2.Richer countries, for instance, tend to have preferential access to capital markets,to attract more FDI,and to be more resilient than poorer countries in according to shifts in global commodity markets.3.The realization that many overall markets are made up of significantly differentgroups of submarket has been one of the most important developments in the history of marketing.4.Deepening institutional reform and transforming the function of government.试卷A答案:Part ⅠPart ⅡPart Ⅲ1、t恤已按要求打包并且按照买方的说明在包裹上做了标注。

The word “touch" in paragraph5 could be best replaced by _____A. “deposit ”B. “lend ”C. “use”D. “cash”Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate (交际) with each other. Not long ago, researcherslearned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn'nteed to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn ' t trees have ways of sending message?11. The author believes that the incident described in the passage ____ .A. cannot be taken seriouslyB. should no longer be permittedC. must be checked more thoroughlyD. seems completely reasonableSchooling and EducationIt is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. People are engaged in educatio n from infancy (婴儿期)on. Educati on, the n, is a very broad, in elusive term.It is a lifelong (—生的)process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integra(l 基本的)part of one's entire life.Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned指定的)seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are words or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process ofschooling.16. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. School is the place where people get informal educationB. Education means schoolingC. Education can be both formal and informalD. Going to school is the only way to receive education17. Education is different from schooling in that ____ .A. the former is predictable while the latter is notB. the former is specific while the latter is notC. the former is a formalized process while the latter is notD. the former is more open-ended and all-inclusive than the latter18. When does education begin?A. Before one enters schoolB. After one enters schoolC. After one graduates from collegeD. After one retires from work19. The fact that children arrive at school at about the same time shows thatA. schooling imposes a lot of strain on the studentsB. schooling has a clear boundaryC. schooling follows more or less the same pattern.D. schooling includes different aspects of learning20. What is the author's attitude toward schooling?A. PositiveB. NegativeC. Neutral (中立的)D. Supportive四.Tran slation— En glish to Chi nese 英译汉(5*3 )1.
