Successful Job and Career Searches
Man: Searching for a new job is painful.
Woman: It seems you will need to have a system that works for you.
M: What are some main sources?
W: The main three sources to find a new job are online jobsites,
networking through friends, and family members and checking
the yellow pages.
M: What is the most common one?
W: Online Jobsites are the most common places to find jobs right
now. Y ou can search jobsites based on your location, industry
and salary requirements. Y ou can also limit your search to full
time, part time and so on.

M: So I should narrow down a little bit?
W: Y eah. Depending on your qualifications and what you are looking for, you can easily narrow your list to three. It is best to have at least one
local site close to home. The national job boards will attract more
attention and more competition.
M: How about the networking for job searches?
W: Networking is one of the best ways. When a position becomes
available the first people to know about it are the employees. I
accepted a position this way many years ago. A co-worker was
leaving the company and before she left, she told me. The process
required very little effort on my part. I contacted her friend who was
the president of the company, interviewed for the position and in a
matter of days accepted an offer.

M: Y ou also mentioned the yellow pages. They aren‟t usually the first
place anyone looks for a job.
W: Right. However, the yellow pages can be your best friend. I once got
on the phone and called every company in the yellow pages that fit
me. I politely asked if the company was hiring for the position I
wanted, requested email addresses and contact names. Before
returning to work after two days, I had been on four interviews and
accepted a new position.

Expanding Sentences (II): Subordination
Becoming better writers partly means that you should be able to write longer sentences. There are mainly two ways to make your sentences longer: coordination and subordination. In Unit 3, we have talked about “coordination”. In this unit, we will discuss about “subordination.”Task 7 Writing Focus
To write longer sentences, we can use one sentence to modify another sentence. This method is subordination(从属). The sentence modified is called a main clause(主句), and the sentence used to modify the other sentence is called a subordinate clause(从句). In the following examples, the italicized parts are subordinate clauses:
A. Meaning of Subordination
Basics
WordsFromNotePage
Page No.71
WordsFromSlide
B. Compound sentence
The dog that you sent me yesterday is very naughty.
When you see this sign, you have to slow down your car.
As you can see from the above examples, a complex sentence is made up of three items: main clause + subordinator + subordinate clause, with the subordinator indicating the relationship between the main and the subordinate clauses. Can you put the above two sentences in proper places in the table below?
WordsFromNotePage
Page No.72
WordsFromSlide
According to the functions in the main clause, subordinate clauses are generally divided into three broad categories: noun clause(名词性从句), adjective clauses(形容词性从句), and adverbial clauses(副词性从句). The following table provides information on some frequently used clauses. Can you work with your group members and supply a few examples for each of them?

Coordination gives equal emphasis to parallel ideas, but subordination places more emphasis on the main clause. To see this clearly, let‟s compare the following sentences:
1. The story is about friendship, and I like the story very much.
2. The story which I like is about friendship.
3. I like the story which is about friendship.
Sentence 1 gives equal attention to both ideas, which means that they are both important, but sentence 2 and 3 mainly focus on the italicized parts in them. With proper subordination, we will be able to avoid choppy sentences while keeping the emphasis on proper place.
Writing Tips

WordsFromSlide
A modifier should be placed close to the part it modifies; otherwise it will make the sentence awkward or even ambiguous. The italicized parts in the following two sentences are such examples.
1. The man was charged with murdering his colleague after the police arrested him.
2. The story she told at first sounded very interesting.
Can you work with your group members and correct the problems?
Error Reminder: Sentence Fragment
