Besides, to become a Master Gardener volunteer, each applicant needs to complete an application, prepare background screening paperwork and schedule an interview with Extension staff.
What Does the Training Involve?
Training sessions are offered one day a week over a threemonth period and are led by expert educators in the region. Approximately 60 hours of classroom instruction and field study and 60 hours of volunteer internship (实习) work are required to complete the program and become certified.
When the sun comes up over the castle of Rocca Calascio, a small mountain village high up in the Italian Apennines, it's like a silent, magic wonderland. One such sunrise struck Franco Cagnoli with a spiritual calling that led him to go on a mission that affected both the village and him deeply.
Rocca Calascio has seen no resident since 1957. Depopulation of rural or mountain villages in Italy began with the resettlement of villagers in the early 20th century, accelerating after World War Two when people were attracted to urban jobs.
However, like many places, the area is enjoying a revival (复苏) and now home
to some families. “To put it in romantic terms, there is a love story between me and the ancient building,” Cagnoli said as he showed visitors round the castle of Rocca Calascio. The castle, with foundations dating back about 1,000 years, is one of the highest in Europe. It began as a tower in a line of connected structures to control and protect the land that stretched inland from the Adriatic Sea.
Cagnoli, now 39, first saw Rocca Calascio when he was 16. He was on a road trip to find himself. “I arrived here as the morning sun lit up the castle. I was blinded by the light and since that day something inside me has changed,” he said. “I thought it was the most beautiful place. I felt special energies, deciding to help its rebirth.” He's now the castle's caretaker and head of a cooperative whose members guide visitors.
“Besides temporary visitors, the complete revival has much to do with permanent residents. People of the previous generation didn't appreciate the land they lived on,” Valeria Befani, a resident in the village, said. “Today's teenagers, like my children, are proud of their land and are happy if they can stay here.”
4.What inspired Cagnoli to help revive Rocca Calascio?
A.His trip to find himself.
B.The impressive scene of the village.
C.His love for ancient buildings.
D.The historical importance of the castle.
5.How was Rocca Calascio affected by World War Two?
A.Its population loss speeded up.
B.It got left behind in economy.
C.Its buildings were damaged.
D.It was known by more people.
6.Why was the castle built?
A.To attract people to visit.
B.To reduce attack from waves.
C.To strengthen coastal defense.
D.To protect the connected structures.
7.What might Befani agree with?
A.Views of different generations vary greatly.
B.Reviving Rocca Calascio has a long way to go.
C.Teenagers are proud of their hometown.
D.The future of Rocca Calascio is full of promise.
C
Mindfulness practice has exploded in popularity recently. Experimenters of a series of trials revealed mindfulnessbased interventions had some benefits for a number of health outcomes. They said, the effects were smaller and less consistent when compared with those of other therapies, and some effects faded soon. Taken together, mindfulnessbased interventions are better than nothing but more research is needed to compare them with other therapies.
All mindfulnessbased interventions attempt to focus on the present moment. Though “to be present” has psychological benefits, in some circumstances it's important to be mindless. That is, as you develop skill in new tasks, you can perform them with increasing facility until attention seems to be unnecessary. Everyday examples range from riding a bike to brushing your teeth.
Underlying this state of “automaticity” are mental processes that can be accomplished without paying attention to them. Research revealed paying much attention to what you're doing can have damaging effects, particularly when you perform tasks that are not intricate at all for you.
In a study, scientist Sian Beilock and her colleagues had skilled golfers play golf under different experimental conditions. In one case, the golfers were simply asked to follow the swing of their club and say “stop” as a sign when they finished their swing. In the second condition, they were instructed to listen for a specific sound while ignoring other noises and say the word “tone” when they heard the target sound. The result showed the skilled golfers performed substantially worse when they zeroed in on their swing than when they concentrated on irrelevant sounds and even when they warmed up.
The important message from this research is that focusing too carefully on
wellpracticed things can cause mistakes. Of course, you should not resign yourself to going through life on automatic pilot. But there are situations where you should let automaticity take over. The next time you ride a bike, don't overthink it.
8.What is the experimenters' attitude to mindfulness?
A.Enthusiastic. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Confused.
9.What does the underlined word “intricate” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Important. B.Familiar.
C.Interesting. D.Complicated.
10.In which aspect are the two conditions of Beilock's study different?
A.Words golfers should listen for.
B.Interventions golfers faced when playing.
C.Things golfers paid attention to.
D.Signals golfers gave after finishing swings.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Sometimes Mindlessness Is Better
B.Mindfulness Is a Doubleedged Weapon
C.Automaticity Plays a Big Role Quietly
D.Relaxation Matters More than Attention

[2023·济南市针对性训练]Normally giving food to wild animals is considered off limits, but the situation in Florida with over 1,000 manatees (海牛) dying from starvation leads officials to consider a plan to feed them. “We've never done such a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered,” said Patrick Rose, Save the Manatee Club's Executive Director. “This is a necessary stopgap measure. But I believe the impact is lasting.”
The emerging plan would involve feeding manatees at a Florida Power & Light plant in Cape Canaveral where manatees stay in cold winter months because of the warm water discharge there. It would be an experiment involving greens delivered in a controlled manner such as by a conveyor belt. “People will not be authorized to simply start
throwing food. It's illegal, and remains so.”
Manatees have long struggled to survive with humans, whose activities bring many harmful effects. Hundreds of the slowmoving animals are struck by boats every year. The accidents have led to nowake manatee zones throughout Fl orida with violations (违反) punishable by significant fines. However, they are just responsible for a small part of the loss of manatees. The starvation threat has led to a record of 1,017 manatee deaths as of Nov. 19, 2021.
This has been caused mainly by runoff from farms, urban areas and waste that promotes algal blooms (藻华). Climate change worsening algal blooms is also a factor. And it's not just manatees. People's health can also be affected by the blooms along with the health of a range of sea creatures. Besides, there's an economic loss for boat captains and sightseeing tour organizers.
“Actually, saving manatees is part of saving the ecosystem. If we can take care, manatees will grow well. If we don't, they won't,” Rose said. “We're in the most cri tical position.” Manatees were listed as endangered when the government protected them in 1967. Increased protections helped manatee numbers increase from around 1,000 to 8,000 by 2017—enough to have their position to be downgraded from “endangered” to “threatened”.
12.What can be learned about the plan to feed manatees?
A.It is a longterm strategy.
B.It is carried out across Florida.
C.It is the first of its kind.
D.It is aimed at saving the ecosystem.
13.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.Human activities.
B. Boat accidents.
C.Nowake manatee zones.
D.Significant fines.
14.Why does the author mention the figures in the last paragraph?
A.To prove manatees' value in the ecosystem.
B.To explain challenges faced by manatees.
C.To encourage people to feed manatees actively.
D.To show the necessity of humans' protections.
15.What is the text mainly about?
A.Wideranging effects of manatees' deaths.
B.A special feeding plan for Florida manatees.
C.Growing food shortage faced by manatees.
D.Ecological crises caused by human activities.

[2023·广东七校高三第一次联考]There are many other kinds of intelligence in addition to intellect (才智), and one important type is emotional intelligence, called EQ for short. Some people have naturally good EQ skills. __1__ The good news is that EQ is a combination of several different skills and everyone can get better—if they know what to do.
Be aware of your emotions. People feel many different emotions throughout the day. Some feelings, like surprise, last just a few seconds. Others may stay longer, creating a mood like happiness or sadness. Noticing emotions helps you manage them. __2__ Labeling them in your mind (for example, by saying to yourself “I feel grateful”,“I'm upset” etc.) would be a useful way to do that.
Manage emotional reactions. People all get angry; everyone has disappointments. __3__ But managing your reaction means knowing when, where, and how to express yourself. When you're able to manage emotions, you can use selfcontrol to hold in your feelings if now is not the right time or place to express them. Someone who has good EQ knows it can damage relationships to react to emotions in a way that's disrespectful, too intense, or harmful.
__4__ People are naturally designed to try to perceive others. Part of EQ is about being able to imagine others' feelings in certain situations. It is also about
understanding why they feel the way they do. Being able to imagine what emotions a person is likely to be feeling is an important ability. __5__ You'll also know what to say and how to behave around someone who is feeling strong emotions with it.
A.It's definitely a thing worth learning.
B.Understand how others feel and why.
C.Often it's important to express how you feel.
D.Practice recognizing emotions as you feel them.
E.Meanwhile, many people need to work on them.
F.It helps you care about others and build good relationships.
G.Some people might go through the entire day in a bad mood.

Franco Cagnoli

结合文章第一段内容和倒数第二段中Franco Cagnoli的话可知,第一段中的“a mission that affected both the village and him deeply”指帮助复兴罗卡卡拉西奥。

根据第二段的“Depopulation of rural or mountain villages in Italy...accelerating after World War Two”可知,20世纪早期意大利的乡村和山村人口剧减,第二次世界大战后,许多人离开了农村地区前往城市,人口减少加剧。

根据第三段的“It began as a tower in a line of connected structures to control and protect the land that stretched inland from the Adriatic Sea”可知,这座城堡最初是一排相连的建筑中的一个塔,其目的是控制和保护从亚得里亚海延伸到内陆的土地。

根据最后一段Befani的话“the complete revival has much to do with permanent residents”“Today's teenagers, like my children, are proud of their land and are happy if they can stay here”可知,Befani认为,罗卡卡拉西奥的彻底复兴与长期居住的居民有很大联系,如今的青少年为罗卡卡拉西奥感到骄傲,如果他们能留在这里,他们会很高兴。

根据第一段的“Experimenters of a series of trials revealed mindfulnessbased interventions...more research is needed to compare them with other therapies”可知,实验者们认为基于正念的干预措施对健康有一些积极影响,与其他疗法相比,基于正念的效果较小且不太持续。

根据第二段中的“until attention seems to be unnecessary...your teeth”和第三段首句“Underlying this state of ‘automaticity’ are mental processes that can be accomplished without paying attention to them”和第四段描述的研究发现可知,人们在做从骑自行车到刷牙这类轻车熟路的事时会进入一种自动化(automaticity)状态。

根据第四段的“In one case, the golfers were simply asked to follow the swing of their club”“In the second condition, they were instructed to listen for a specific sound while ignoring other noises”可知,在第一种情况下,参与者要关注他们的挥杆过程;在第二种情况下,他们要留心听一个特定的声音。

根据第一段的“We've never done such a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered”可知,喂养海牛计划是同类计划中的第一个。
