21.(6分)Christmas at the mountain cline would have to wait. The banks beside Mary Breckinridge’s Wendover, Kentucky, clinic were ru ined after a heavy rain. She had to find a way to get her five patients to the hospital in Lexington.
With a neighbor’s help, Mary and the nurses built a boat. They named it Ambulance, and on the morning of December 30,1926. Mary another nurse, and the patients set off down the river. After sixteen wild miles on the dangerous river, they arrived at the train station in Krypton. As she watched the train pull away with her patients safely on board. Mary smiled and waved.
Mary had not planned to be a nurse. She was the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky politician. As a child, Mary was influenced by her family who had always been concerned about the poorer people of the state. When she grew up, Mary was inspired to become a nurse. So in 1925 Mary hired a few British-trained nurses and, with some money from her family, started the Frontier Nursing Service in Wendover, Kentucky.
Before Mary and her nurses came, the mountain people lived a hard life. Families made so little money that they could not afford doctors or medicine. Many children had diseases and nearly every person was malnourished for lack of food.
Mary and the nurses built clinics and a small hospital deep in the forests of Leslie County. There were no paved roads, electricity, or telephones. Each day the nurses rode on horseback to outlying farms, often in bad wenther, to answer calls for help. They worked hard to keep an eye on their patients.
To the grateful mountain people, Mary and the nurses seemed to be everywhere. They treated everything from cut fingers to pneumonia(肺炎), gave shots, and delivered babies. The proud countrymen liked the nurses because they treated everyone with respect.
The Frontier Nursing Service grew. Today their Nursing Service reaches far beyond the Kentucky mountains. Medical professionals from all over the world come to Wendover to study rural health care in action. When these men and women go back to

22.(8分) A biologist once criticized for stealing eggs from the nests of the rarest bird in the world has been awarded the “Nobel Prize” of conservation after his methods saved nine species from extinction.
Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize --- the highest accolade in the field of animal conservation --- for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel from becoming the next Great Auk.
When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s, he was told to close down a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest bird on Earth. However, he stayed, using the techniques of captive breeding (人工繁殖), which involved snatching eggs from the birds’ nests and hatching(孵化)them under incubators, prompting the mothers to lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared to over 300 and today there are around 400 in the wild. The biologist has also been necessary in efforts to bring other rare species back from the edge of extinction, including the pink pigeon, echo
parakeet and Rodrigues warbler.
Prof Jones was awarded the $250,000 (£172,000) prize at a ceremony in London.
“As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn’t enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I received,” reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Maurutius kestrel project had been seen as a “dead loss” at the time. In the 1970s there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics arguing that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
Prof Jones has devoted his whole life to his work, only becoming a father for the first time eight years ago, at 53. He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him, because it proved that his work to save birds was right.

24.(8分)A 12-year-old with end stage cancer, the child’s parents had recently
moved her from the hospital to her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Some days later the girl’s breath quickened, and her father phoned the family’s hospice nurse. Please come, he said.
The nurse knew the visit would require more than four hours of her time: a
two-hour drive in each direction, plus her time with the girl. Why don’t we connect over FaceTime, she asked. The father agreed, and they connected.
The nurse asked the father to move his daughter gently to her side, then to her back, to lift the child’s shirt. The nurse would ask: What d o you see, what concerns you, and the father would explain. In this fashion the pair examined the girl --- the nurse on her computer, the father his iPad. Together they decided that the nurse’s presence was not necessary, that the child had more time.
Later, the father reported feeling comforted by the nurse. He appreciated her availability, the fact that she could see what he saw, and their ability to discuss it in real time.
Telemedicine has become a trend in America. Some hospitals have gone so far as to specially design telemedicine clinics. The room is staged like an office but with better lighting. There’s a nice desk for the clinician to sit behind, a computer situated stage left, and books in the background. A physician taking a video call from home might wear a pair of headphones, equipped with a mic --- to ensure whatever the patient says isn’t broadcast to anyone off-camera.
However, there is something more than the technology bit. According to David, the head of the telemedicine pilot the girl’s f amily had been part of, there are some people who are great in person and you put them on camera they’re a dead fish. “Some physicians are camera shy. For others, the physical isolation can actually help them be more empathetic.” He adds.

4、What challenges may clinicians face in telemedicine?
A.They are afraid of being isolated from patients.

25.(10分)For as long as we’ve known about it, humans have searched for a cure for cancer. Across the world, countless amounts of time and money have been spent on researching a way to stop this terrible disease. But now, it seems like the answer could have been inside our own bodies the whole time.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in the US, a government agency that’s responsible for healthcare, approved a new form of gene therapy(疗法) that could mean the end of a certain type of cancer.
The therapy allows scientists to “train” the immune(有免疫力的) cells of sick patients to fight leukemia(白血病) — a form of blood cancer that mostly affects young people.
The exciting new treatment works by removing healthy immune cells from the patient, known as T-cells, which are then changed to be able to “hunt down” cancer cells.
The cells are then put back into the patient before they begin to get rid of the patient’s leukemia over time, similar to how th e body fights off other illnesses.
“This is truly an exciting new day for cancer patients,” Louis J. DeGennaro,
president of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said in a news release.
Up until now, a long and painful marrow transplant(骨髓移植) was the only option for many leukemia patients.
In this procedure, healthy blood cells are taken from a donator and placed into the sick patient, who also has to go through chemotherapy (化疗) to allow their body to adjust to the new cells.
But with a recovery rate of around 3% — according to a news release published by the FDA —it’s hoped that the days of painful trips to the hospital, or even death, are over for leukemia sufferers.
“We’re entering a new frontier in medical innovation(创新) with the ability to reprogram a p atient’s own cells to attack a deadly cancer,” FDA representative Scott Gottlieb said in the release. “New technologies such as gene and cell therapies hold the potential to transform medicine and our ability to treat and even cure many incurable illnesses.”
1、What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To compare different ways of curing leukemia.
B.To report on a breakthrough in cancer treatment.
C.To explore the potential of gene and cell therapies.
D.To show scientists’ efforts in search of a cure for cancer.
2、How does the new treatment to fight leukemia work?
A.By using changed T-cells to destroy cancer cells.
B.By replacing sick blood cells with healthy ones.
C.By removing sick blood cells during marrow transplant.
D.By using chemother apy to improve the patient’s immune system.
3、What can be inferred about the new therapy for leukemia sufferers?
A.It can save them many more trips to the hospital.
B.It can improve their ability to fight off all kinds of cancer.
C.It can give them a better chance of survival and recovery.
D.It can reduce their pain in the process of marrow transplant.
4、What is Scott Gottlieb’s attitude toward gene and cell therapies?
A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic. C.Worried. D.Casual.

29、Although my name is written next to the ugly picture on the blackboard, I will not be angry. I will keep calm and use humorous language to solve the embarrassment. I will say, "who drew me? Am I so ugly? Remember to draw me better next time " , and then, I will quietly wipe the picture off the blackboard, so as not to affect the normal class. After class, I will have a chat with the student who drew me and ask him about the reasons for the picture. If he is dissatisfied with me in a certain aspect, I will listen patiently. After self-reflection, if it is my reason, I will correct it in time and try to get his approval. If he did it just for fun, I will patiently tell him that such behavior is not correct and I hope that he should respect me and shouldn’t play such an excessive joke on me.
In a word, in such a situation, I will not be angry or denounce him. I will keep calm and use humorous language to resolve the embarrassment.。
