A few months ago, a friend of mine told me something about a woman named Virginia Feigles. Virginia Feigles had always planned to go to college. She couldn't make her dream come true when she was young because her parents were poor. She got married early, and soon became a mother. Year after year, time passed quickly. But Feigles never forgot her dream. After working as a hairdresser (理发师) for twenty years, she finally decided to change her life, when she was already forty-four.
Feigles first went to a night school to learn high school lessons. After a few months, she applied (申请) to Bucknell University. It was hard for her to study in the university. She couldn't understand what the teacher taught in class. She also had to work at night. After work, she kept learning until very late. She thought about giving up many times, but she never really did that. After a lot of such hard days, Feigles graduated (毕业) successfully and soon became an engineer!
I heard this story when I was at the bottom of my life. I was no longer young and I lost my job. Feigles' story inspired (激励) me a lot! "If Virginia can do it, I can too!" I decided to make some change to my life, too!
(1)How old was Virginia Feigles when she started working as a hairdresser?
A. 20.
B. 24.
C. 30.
D. 44.
(2)The underlined part "did that" can be replaced by "_______".
A. stopped studying in the university
B. gave up her job
C. stopped teaching in the school
D. worked as an engineer
(3)It can be inferred(推断) that __________________________.
A. Feigles' family was rich when she was young.
B. Feigles didn't have children.
C. It was easy for Feigles to study in the university.
D. Feigles' story made a difference to the writer's life.
(4)From the passage we can learn that___________________.
A. it's expensive to go to college
B. it's never too late to learn
C. anyone can be an engineer
D. parents are the best teachers
【答案】(1)B
(2)A
(3)D
(4)B

After working as a hairdresser (理发师) for twenty years, she finally decided to change
her life, when she was already forty-four.

She couldn't make her dream come true when she was young because her parents were poor.

She got married early, and soon became a mother.

根据第三段she applied (申请) to Bucknell University. It was hard for her to study in the university.

根据末段Feigles' story inspired (激励) me a lot!和I decided to make some change to my life, too!

“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.

The pig was owned by a British man who lived on a small island. The island was just off the western part of North America. Both England and the US said the island was theirs. Across the island from the British man lived some American farmers. Everyone on the island got along peacefully. But the peace ended the day the British man's pig decided to eat some of an American farmer's potatoes.
One of the American farmers shot and killed the pig. Then the pig's owner wanted $100 from the man who shot the animal. That was a lot of money, so the farmer refused to pay it. The British and Americans began to argue, and the situation got worse. The farmers asked the governor over the island at that time for help. He sent a group of soldiers to protect the farmers. The British answered by sending 2, 000 soldiers. The British were on one side of the island, and the Americans were on the other. Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟).
Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达) yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are
unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree(有分歧) on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a car. They argued over it, but finally they came to a compromise. Michael bought the car, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try.

One day, when I arrived at school, an ice cream truck was parked in the schoolyard. Ice cream men usually drove their trucks to primary schools. He is not the worst boy in the entire shire, but the cleverest and most creative boy. Only he doesn't find a place to show himself."
His stepmother's words warmed his heart, his eyes full of tears. With this, he started building friendship with his stepmother. And this became the drive of his life, making him create 28 successful golden rules, which helped tens of thousands of ordinary people walk on the road to
success.
Before his stepmother came, no one praised him smart, and his father and neighbours considered him as a bad boy. However, his stepmother's words changed his life.
When Hill was 14 years old, his stepmother bought him a used typewriter and said to him, "I believe you will become a writer." Hill accepted his stepmother's gift and expectation, and started writing things to a local newspaper. He understood his stepmother's strong feeling of interest in his family while he saw with his own eyes she had changed his family. Therefore, he would do as well as she expected him to.
The strength from his stepmother made him a rich man and famous writer in the United States and one of the most important persons in the 20th century.
Praise will never be unnecessary, especially for children. A sincere(真诚的)praise may be better than 10, 000 bad words.
