13. Many people wrongly think that cities don’t have farms and that fruits and vegetables are only grown in the country. Believe it or not, there are more and more urban farms popping up in cities all over the world.
Alexandra Sullivan, a food system researcher in New Y ork City, studies urban agriculture. Urban agriculture is another name for farming and gardening in a city environment. Ms. Sullivan studies everything from tiny gardens in empty lots between buildings to bigger fields that have been planted and grown. According to Ms. Sullivan, “Urban agriculture has existed since cities have, across the world.”
The number of humans living in urban areas, or cities, is increasing. The amount of people who want to garden in urban areas is also rising, Ms.Sullivan says, “In small gardens, on rooftops and indoors, they grow fruits, vegetables, grains, and herbs, and raise animals to produce milk, eggs, honey, and meat. They use these foods as supplements to food produced by rural agriculture.” Even though some people who live in urban areas grow crops, urban residents still need to rely on food grown in rural areas. This is because a city doesn’t have enough space to grow enough food for everyone living in it.
In New Y ork City, urban farmers have come up with many different ways to grow their own produce, even though there isn’t a lot of room. For example, Brooklyn Grange is a farming operation that has two rooftop vegetable farms in New Y ork City. All together, the farms are made up of 2.5acres of rooftop space. This makes Brooklyn Grange one of the largest rooftop farming operations in the world.
Brooklyn Grange grows all kinds of things. The farming company sells its vegetables to local residents and restaurants. And because the farms are on rooftops, they are specially adapted to their urban location. They use available space that is not needed for anything else. As more urban farmers find ways to grow food in cities, urban residents will be better able to get fresher materials for their meals.1. Which of the following is Ms. Sullivan’s opinion according to the text?
A .The number of people living in cities is increasing slowly.
B .Urban residents still rely on food grown in rural areas completely.
C .Urban agriculture has a history as long as cities.
D .Urban agriculture can provide huge income.
2. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A .Farmers.
B .City residents.
C.Rurai residents.D.Companies.
3. What can we learn about Brooklyn Grange in New York City from the text?
A.It has large farming areas.B.It can only grow single products.
C.It produces enough food for citizens.D.It makes use of rooftop space to grow vegetables.
4. What may be the best title for the text?
A.Farms in Cities B.Future Food System
C.Food Grown in Cities D.Agriculture of New York City

15. Most painters discover a style of painting that is fit for them and stick to that, especially if people admire their pictures. But Picasso, the great Spanish painter, was like a man who had not yet found his own particular style of painting. He kept on struggling to find the perfect expression till his death in 1973.
Some of Picasso’s painting are rich, soft colored and beautiful. Others are ugly and cruel and strange. But such paintings allow us to imagine things for ourselves. They force us to say to ourselves,“What does he see that makes him paint like that?” And we begin to look under the surface of the things we see.
Picasso painted thousands of pictures in different styles. Sometimes he painted the natural look of things. Sometimes he seemed to break them apart and throw the pieces in our faces. He showed us what the mind knows as well as what the eyes see. At the age of 90,he remained as curious about the world as he had been when he was young. That is why people have called him “the youngest painter in the world.”
1. The ugly cruel and strange paintings by Picasso.
A.make us try to notice something latent(隐藏) in the things
B.allow us to ask questions about them
C.force us to question anything we see
D.cause us to think what Picasso saw was different from what we see

B.Because he looked young when he was old.
C.Because he never stopped painting he was old.
D.Because he never gave up looking for something new.
16. Solar energy systems/power plants do not produce air pollution, water pollution, or greenhouse gases. Using solar energy can have a positive,
indirect effect on the environment, when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment.
However, some poisonous materials and chemicals are used to make the photovoltaic (光电池的) cells that convert sunlight into electricity. Some solar thermal (保热的) systems use potentially hazardous liquids to transfer heat. Leaks of these materials could be harmful to the environment. U. S.
environmental laws regulate the use and settlement of these types of materials.
As with any type of power plant, large solar power plants can affect the environment near their locations. The placement of the power plant may have long-term effects on the habitats of native plants and animals. Some solar power plant-s may require water for cleaning solar collectors and concentrators or for cooling turbine generators. Using large volumes of ground water or surface water in some dry locations may affect the ecosystems that depend on these water resources. In addition, the beam of concentrated sunlight a solar power tower creates can kill birds and insects that fly into the beam.
The amount of solar energy that the earth receives each day is many times greater than the total amount of all energy that people consume each day. However, on the sur~ace of the earth, solar energy is a variable and irregular energy source. The amount of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight varies by time of day and location. Weather and climate conditions affect the availability of sunlight daily and on a seasonal basis. The type and size of
a soIar energy collection and conversion system determines how much of the available solar energy we can convert into useful energy.
1. Which of the following best explains "hazardous" underlined in paragraph 2?
A.inexpensive B.dangerous
C.ineffective D.abnormal
2. What influence can large solar power plants have on the locations?
A.Polluting the ground water.
B.Protecting the habitats of plants and animals.
C.Damaging the local natural balance.
D.Attracting birds and insects to the area.
3. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Different areas receive different amount of solar energy.
B.How to convert solar energy into useful energy.
C.The relationship between solar energy collection and the sunlight.
D.Some factors that influence the amount of solar energy collection.
4. What does the author think of the solar energy systems?
A.They are totally environment-friendly.
B.They have both advantages and disadvantages.
C.They should be forbidden in the future.
D.They should be encouraged in quantities.

文章主要介绍了一些消费者也可以帮助应对气候变化的措施。

17. When talking to people about climate change, you might always get asked the question: What can you do to help as a consumer? Here are
some specific steps you can take:
Sign up for a green pricing program with your electric utility. Some utility companies allow homes and businesses to pay extra for power from clean sources. When you participate in these programs, you’re telling your utility company that you’re willing to pay more to address climate. 1 Without that demand signal, the innovations that governments and businesses invest in will stay in the shelf.
2 Depending on how much money and time you can spare, you can replace your incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, install a smart
thermostat, insulate your windows, buy efficient appliances, or replace your heating and cooling system with a heat pump.
Buy an electric vehicle (EV). EVs have come a long way in terms of cost and performance. Although they might not be right for everyone, they’re becoming more affordable for many consumers. 3 People buy lots of them, companies will make lots of them.

(know) now as New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood and began making what he called “toaster crumpets (小圆烤饼)”.
