Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain pow er by exercising your “explain power.”
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.
54.What would be the best title for the passage?
on How to Write
Your Brain Power Through Writing
Power Helps Improve Your Writing
to Start your Writing
55.According to the passage, writing can help you a lot EXCEPT ________.
increase your brain power
improve the ability to remember
develop your interest in study
strengthen the understanding of a topic
56.If a writer writes something, it means that he or she ______.

to remember it in his or her mind testing his or her new ideas
57.The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fourth paragraph means that
_______.
are already successful
’s a long way for you to go to reach your goal
are left wondering what to do
have been on the way to success
58.Which of the following statements is true?
can cure people of their brain disease.
who can keep all thoughts in mind are more likely to succeed.
a book about one topic is the only way to understand it.
more you write, the more logical you will be.
One of the most striking findings of a recent questionnaire in the UK is that of the people interviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a family with.
Why are many people finding it increasingly difficult to start and keep close relationships? Does modern life really make it harder to fall in love? Or are we making it harder for ourselves?
It is certainly the case today that contemporary couples benefit in different ways from relationships. Women no longer rely upon partners for economic security or status. A man doesn’t expect his wife to be in sole (唯一的) charge of running his household and raising his children.
But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it takes much more to persuade people to abandon their independence.
In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days. Only a few generations ago, your choice of soul mate was restricted by geography, social convention and family tradition. Although it was never clear, many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have been broken down. You can approach a builder or a brain surgeon in any bar in any city on any given evening. When the world is your oyster (牡蛎), you surely have a better chance of finding a pearl.
But it seems that the old conventions have been replaced by an even tighter restriction: the limitations of choice. The expectations of partners are made greater to an unmanageable degree: good looks, impressive salary, kind to grandmother, and so on. There is no room for error in the first impression.
We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn’t, it is intended to be thrown away. We work to protect ourselves against future heartache and don’t put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a strong relationship. Twelve-hour work at the office makes relaxed
after-hours dating difficult. The cost of housing and child-raising creates pressure to have a stable income and career before a life partnership.
59.In a contemporary family, .
share the burdens begin to depend on women
are responsible for housework can’t get along together
60.People don’t want to give up their independence because .
think they can live happily alone want to have more choices

61.People don’t bother to date because .

takes them too much energy at work
requires luck to build a strong relationship
causes mental problems to find a life partner
62.Which of the following can best describe the main idea of the passage?
is much more important than love.
should spend more money on marriage today.
expectations of partners and financial pressure may block a relationship.
a perfect marriage can be abandoned for the sake of independence.
I was raised on a farm in the Fraser Valley along with five sisters and one brother. When I was 15, I got addicted to drinking at weekends and then dropped out of school. By the time I was 17, I continued to drink heavily. I couldn't find a job to support myself. So, I had no other choice but to join the army. I retired and went back home three years later, still a heavy drinker. When I was 22, I met Sue whose father was also a heavy drinker, so my behavior didn't surprise her. We were soon married and later had two daughters.
I started my first business when I was in my mid-twenties. A few years later, I bought a large chicken farm. Even with this success, though, my drinking was always a problem. It affected my marriage and family so much that I knew I had to make up my mind to stop drinking. So I tried great efforts. But two years later, I began drinking again.
When I was in my mid-thirties, I sold both of my businesses, and bought the big house on the hill. I was not at all happy, although I had everything that was supposed to make me happy. I sold our big house on the hill and bought a large land, where I built a new house. Our marriage was in big trouble, and my finances would go down the drain. For the first time in many years, I had to go to work for someone as an employee. I took a job as a heavy equipment operator in a road building camp.
My marriage still came apart when I was 38, and my kids had to go through our divorce. I spent 6 months in giving up drinking on a school camp. Nearly a year later, I met my childhood neighbor girl, June. We were married not long afterwards. My kids learned to trust me and I have two stepchildren that also love me.
Happy life continued about ten years. Everything was going so well when I felt there was something wrong with my body. I went to see a doctor, and the medical examination came out that I had ALS(肌肉萎缩症). Record shows that people with ALS generally survive between two to five years after symptoms appear. I've probably had the symptoms for
one-and-a-half years already, so I don't know how much time I have left.…God knows…

finance was the first thing that led to the failure of his first marriage.
first wife didn’t know about his drinking before marriage.

67.What is true according to the last paragraph?

We all need physical exercise. Exercise uses up food we eat and keeps the body energetic. It works your muscles and makes your heart work hard so as to send blood to your muscles. So, exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Exercise also makes you feel refreshed. If you take regular exercises, you will stay happy and healthy.
Some Western countries, such as the United States, have problems with exercise. In the US, many people lack exercise because it is hard for them. People have to work from dawn till dusk, so they don't have time to take exercise. They work in office buildings sitting in chairs all day long in front of computers. They cannot get much exercise sitting at desk passively.
Some Westerners can get exercise walking from their homes to work. However, the majority of people cannot do this. It is too far from their homes to their offices. They have no choice but to drive to work. In fact, some have to drive one or two hours to their offices. This is unfavorable in two ways. First, these people don't have a chance to exercise because they are sitting in their cars for two to four hours each day. Second, driving is challenging especially in rush hours and calls for too much attention. It makes a person very tired. So, when these people arrive home at night, they don't have the desire to take exercise after work.
Today, many people in the West are overweight, which causes health problems for them. Doctors say exercise can help people both lose weight and improve their health. So many people are trying to get more exercise. But it takes time to change, and when people don't see a difference right away, they will be discouraged and stop exercising.

Hi Worried,
I'm sorry to know that you're having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong, so you don't have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you'll regret. Here are three useful tips:
First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise, which is an effective way to get rid of your anger. And third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits.
I hope you'll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal.
Yours,
