Our house was across the street from a big hospital so we rented our spare upstairs room to outpatients (门诊病人). One evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly sick-looking man.
His face looked terrible — it was swollen and red. Yet his voice was pleasant. He told me that he came for treatment and that he’d been hunting for a spare room since noon, but no one would give him one. “I guess it’s my face...”
For a moment, I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I will sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.”
The old man had a huge heart inside his tiny body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughter, his daughter’s five children and her disabled husband.
He didn’t complain while telling me his story. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was seemingly a form of skin cancer.
The next morning, he said, “Can I come back and stay next time I need treatment?” I told him he was welcome to come again.
On his next trip, as a gift, he brought a big fish and some large oysters (牡蛎). In the years that he stayed with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us gifts like these.
My neighbour warned me that I could lose potential renters after the old man left.
Maybe we did lose renters once or twice. But if they had known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family will always be grateful to have known him. From him, we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude.
4. Why did the author let the old man stay after hesitation?
A. The old man looks terrible and frightening.
B. The old man is pitifully undemanding.
C. The old man could’t rent room from others.
D. The old man talked happily with the author.
5. Which of the following shows the old man had a big heart?
A.He had a large family to raise.
B. He could sleep in a rocking chair.
C. He did’t care about his disease.
D. He wanted to come back and stay the next time.
6. What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs?
A. He was grateful for the neighbour’s warning.
B. He and his neighbor are good friends.
C. He truly appreciated the old man.
D. He lost potential renters happily.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text ?
A. Kindness makes the world beautiful.
B. Happiness is around thecorner.
C. No pains, No gains.
D. Live positively.

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conductedin Youngstown,Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Instituteof Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they’re short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater."We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day,"explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about
one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by,is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on and off"switch"where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source(电源)-such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway-a lot of energy is lost during transmission(传输).Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. A new study of different plants.
B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces.
D. Benefits from green plants.
9. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?
A. To detect plants’ lack of water
B. To change compositions of plants
C. To make the life of plants longer.
D. To test chemicals in plants.
10. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A. They will speed up energy production.
B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce energy consumption.
D. They could take the place of power plants.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can we grow more glowing plants?
B. How do we live with glowing plants?
C. Could glowing plants replace lamps?
D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free?
D
There are many useful things we can do each day to feel better. It may take some efforts and time to make a habit of drinking 8 glasses of water daily or thinking more positively, but it is well worth it. What things do you do every day to feel better?
Probably the healthiest thing you can do to feel better each day is to exercise early in the morning. You don't have to run the whole morning or spend a few hours in the gym. Even doing some easy exercise like walking, sit-ups or jumping the rope will help you feel better in no time!
Again, due to our busy schedules, we don't get enough sleep each night. If you have trouble falling asleep, avoid watching TV or surfing the Internet right before bed. Also, try to make healthy bedtime snack choices and don't drink tea or coffee too late in the day.
If you drink 3 glasses of water, 4 glasses of coffee or tea and a glass of soda each day and think that you drink enough water, think again. Your body needs water (not coffee or soda!) to function properly. Aiming to drink 7-8 glasses of water each day can make you feel better.
Being positive is the key to a longer life. Positive thoughts can help improve your overall heath. Life is full of stressful situations and it's hard to stay cheerful when everything goes wrong, but your positive attitude can help you solve any problem and fight any stress faster and easier. Your positive attitude is especially good for your heart health. Smile, stay positive and live a longer life!
12. In the author's opinion which can benefit us most in order that we feel better?
A. Sleeping enough.
B. Drinking enough water.
C. Thinking more positively.
D. Taking morning exercise.
13. Which of the following agrees with what is said in Paragraph 3?
A. Drinking tea or coffee makes us sleep less.
B. Drinking tea before bed makes it harder to fall asleep.
C. Watching TV or surfing the Internet leads to less sleep.
D. Our busy schedules cause more difficulty in falling asleep.
14. Why is water necessary to our body?
A. Because it can make us feel better.
B. Because it can have our body work smoothly.
C. Because in can do more good to our body thancoffee.
D. Because it can hep avoid feeling thirsty.
15. What do we need most when everything goes wrong?
A. Thinking positively.
B. Thinking out wise ways.
C. Having a right attitude.
D. Staying cheerful.

Our class joined in a meaningful activity during the winter vacation. First, we went to visit the old lady who lived all alone. Some chatted with her but others helped do a thorough cleaning for us. When the work was done, the house looked real neat and tidy. Then we went to the sports center, there all equipment needed polished. We set out to work at once. Everything was dust-free at no time. Having done all this, we saw a pleasant community than before. Tiring as we were, we felt happy as all of our work was paid off.
第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右。

2.续写部分分两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Paragraph 1:
Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door.
Paragraph 2:
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.
