阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I must have looked deep in thought, or as deep in thought as an 11-year-old man can, when my grandmother glanced up from her weeding to ask, "You have something on your mind, don't you?"
"Yes, I was thinking that someday I want to be an Olympic speedskating champion like my hero, Eric Heiden, I want to be a doctor like my parents and I want to help children in Africa."
I immediately knew I had confided in the right person when a knowing smile broke across her face. "Johann, of course! You can do anything you want to do!" she said simply. And with my grandmother's support, I set out to pursue my passions.
14 years later, I was well ready to take hold of my first dream: becoming an Olympic champion. The Olympics in 1994 were in my home country, Norway. As I entered the Olympic stadium, I wasn't the best athlete, and many had doubts about my ability to perform well. But I had something special working for me. I had a woman in the first row who believed in me following my passions just as much as I did. For the first time ever, my grandmother was going to see me skate.
It happened. Breaking a world record, I won the gold.
As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamed about my entire life, a curious question popped into my head. Why me? Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there? The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief
in her grandson's dream. The question led me to only one answer: because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success, I could.
I immediately knew what that difference had to be: hope in the lives of the children in Africa. Six months earlier, I'd been invited to Eritrea as an ambassador for Olympic Aid.

CHICAGO -- New research on vegetables and aging gives mothers another reason to say "I told you so." It is found that eating vegetables appears to help keep the brain young and may slow the mental decline(下降) sometimes associated with growing old.
On measures of mental sharpness, older people who ate more than two servings of vegetables daily appeared about five years younger at the end of the six-year study than those who ate few or no vegetables.
The research in almost 2,000 Chicago-area men and women doesn't prove that
vegetables reduce mental decline, but it adds to mounting evidence pointing in that direction. The findings also echo(回应) previous research in women only.
Green leafy vegetables including spinach(菠菜), kale and collards (甘蓝)appeared to be the most beneficial. The researchers said that may be because they contain healthy amounts of vitamin E, an antioxidant(抗氧化剂) that is believed to help fight chemicals produced by the body that can damage cells.
Vegetables generally contain more vitamin E than fruits, which were not linked with slowed mental decline in the study. Vegetables also are often eaten with healthy fats such as salad oils, which help the body absorb vitamin E and other antioxidants, said lead author Martha Clare Morris, a researcher at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center.
The fats from healthy oils can help keep cholesterol(胆固醇)low and arteries (动脉)clear, which both contribute to brain health. The study was published in this week's issue of the journal Neurology and funded with grants from the National Institute on Aging.
45.The passage may probably come from ______.
A.Magazine
B. Newspaper
C. Science Journal
D. School Textbook
46. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The research has clearly proved that eating vegetables can reduce mental decline.
B. The new research is tested among 2,000 females.
C. The findings of the new research do not agree with the previous one.
D. It seems that eating vegetables can help keep the brain young.
47. We can conclude from the text that our brain can be healthy if our body contains
the following except_____.
A. low cholesterol
B. clear arteries
C. fats
D. healthy amounts of vitamin E

Modern festival-goers who worry about ending up with a dead mobile phone battery
after days stuck in a muddy field with no electric plug power points may now have a solution—power boots.
Mobile phone company European Telco Orange has introduced a phone charging prototype(原型)—a set of thermoelectric gumboots or Wellington boots with a “power generating sole” that changes heat from the wearer’s feet into electrical power to charge battery-powered hand-helds.
The boot was designed by Dave Pain, managing director at GotWind, a renewable energy company. Pain said the boot uses the Seebeck effect, in which a circuit made of two dissimilar metals conducts electricity if the two places where they connect are held at d ifferent temperatures. “In the sole(鞋底) of the Wellington boot there’s a thermocouple and if you apply heat to one side of the thermocouple and cold to the other side it produces an electrical charge,” Pain said. “That electrical charge we then pass throug h to a battery which you’ll find in the heel of the boot for storage of the electrical power for later use to charge your mobile phone.” These thermocouples are connected electrically, forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers(薄片). When the heat from the foot is applied on the top side of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side, from the cold of the ground, electricity is made.
But the prototype boot does have one shortcoming. You have to walk for 12 hours in the boots to make one hour’s worth of charge.
48. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. How the boot works to make electricity.
B. How the boot was designed.
C. Who invented the power boot.

If you are hungry, what do you do? Grab a piece of your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? 51 But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your dream lover or favorite star. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity gets a full stop.
52 Now why reading and not watching TV? Because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from the childhood. Just like that to develop other aspects of our life, we have to get help from reading.
Once you read a book, you just don't run your eyes through the lines, but even your mind decodes it and explains it to you. 53 Now this seed is unknowingly used by you in your future to develop new ideas. The same seed if used many times, can help you link and relate a lot of things, of which you would have never thought in your wildest dreams!
This is nothing but creativity. More the number of books you read, your mind will open up like never before. 54 Within no time you start speaking English or any language fluently with your friends or other people and you never seem to run out of the right words at the right time.

B. Why not do some reading while you are hungry?

My dear John,
I’d like to introduce my younger brother to you. He’ll travel to New York soon. In New York he’ll visit a few places of interest and do some shopping. I’m hoping he’ll make some American friends there. That is really a great opportunity for him to get to know the US and its culture better.
He hasn’t been able to master the English language despite his three years of study. He is afraid people won’t be able to understand him. Would you be kind enough to give him as much help as possible?
I am very grateful to you for your help. Thank you very much.
Your friend forever, Li Ming。
