Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam (骗局), at least in the US --the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.
It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, maing sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special eys.
But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fae buttons can actually mae you feel better by offering you a sense of control.
“Perceived (能够感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “ having a lac of control is associated with depression.”
Eperts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do any thing eist in our lives for this same purpose. For eample, many offices in the US have fae thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they thin they can control the temperature in their worspace.
But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fae buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.
“That habit is here to stay,” John ounios, a psychology professor, sai d. “Even though I have real doubts about the traffic ligh t buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will wor?”

grandchildren, I said, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible (看不见的) in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world ecept you and these children that I want to see!"
My daughter smiled calmly and said, "We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this eperience." After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read "Daffodil Garden"? We got out of the car and each too a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a comer of the path, and I looed up amaed. Before me lay the most beautiful sight. Flows of flowers of different colors seemed poured down the pea and slopes. There were five acres of flowers! A seas of daffodil! It was lie a fairyland all beyond description.
"But who has done this?" I ased Carolyn. "It's just one woman," Carolyn answered. The Cuban iguana is a species of liard(蜥蜴) of the iguana family. It is the largest of the West Indian roc iguanas, one of the most endangered groups of liards. This species with red eyes and a thic tail is one of the largest liards in the Caribbean.
The Cuban iguana is primarily herbivorous; 95% of its diet consists of the leaves, flowers and fruits from as many as 30 plant species, including the seaside roc bush and various grasses. However, Cuban iguanas occasionally consume animal matter, and individuals have been observed eating the dead flesh of birds, fish and crabs, The researchers wrote that quite a few people on Isla Magueyes could have caused this incident.
The Cuban iguana is distributed throughout the rocy southern coastal areas of mainland Cuba and its surrounding islands with a wild population booming on Isla Magueyes, Puerto Rico. It is also found on the Cayman Islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, where a separate subspecies occurs. Females guard their nest sites and often nest in sites half destroyed by Cuban crocodiles. To avoid the attac from them, the Cuban iguana often maes its home within or near pricly-pear cacti (仙人掌).
In general the species is in decline, more quicly on the mainland than on the outlying islands. One of the reasons for their decline is habitat destruction caused by t he over consuming of farm animals, housing development, and the building of tourist resorts on the beaches where the animals prefer to build their nests. Although the wild population is in decline, the numbers of iguanas have been sharply increased as a result of captive-breeding(圈养) and other conservation programs. 【语篇解读】科普类阅读。
