(一)词汇学习
1.furnish
vt. to equip with what is needed, especially to provide furniture for 布置家具;配备家具 The room was completely furnished. 房间里有舒适的家具。
The room was furnished with the simplest necessities, a bed, a chair, and a table. 房间里只布置了最简单的必需品,一张床、一把椅子和一张桌子。
The new guest hotel’s finished, but it’s not yet furnished.新的招待所已建成,但家具还没有布置好。
2.shabby
adj. (1). showing signs of wear and tear; threadbare or worn-out 肮脏破旧的, 破烂不堪的 a shabby old hat 破旧的帽子 (2). wearing threadbare clothing衣衫褴褛的,寒酸的 a shabby old man 一位衣衫褴褛的 (3). despicable; mean低劣的, 卑鄙的, 不公平的 What a shabby trick, driving off and leaving me to walk home!多卑劣的恶作剧, 把车开走了让我走路回家。
3.possession
n. (1). [C] something possessed or property拥有物,财产 He lost all his possessions in the big fire. 在那场大火中他失去了所有的财产。
A toy bear is the only possession of the boy. 一个玩具熊是这个男孩唯一的财产。
(2). [U] the act or fact of possessing拥有;持有 The two children are fighting for possession of the book.这两个小孩正在争这本书。
At last, Tom got possession of the ball.最后,汤姆得到了球。
4.weep [wi:p]
vi. to express emotion, such as grief or sadness, by shedding tears 流泪; 落泪 He lost control of his feelings and began to weep.他情不自禁流起眼泪来。
They wept for their failure.他们为失败而落泪。
vt. to bring to a specified condition by weeping哭泣 She wept herself into a state of exhaustion.她哭累了。
The young wan wept his fate. 这个年轻人悲叹命运。
5.attend
vt. (1). to be present at出席,参加 Although he was still not well, the boy insisted on attending class.虽然身体还不太舒服,男孩还是坚持去上课。
I need to dress up a little to attend my friend’s wedding. 我需要打扮一下去出席朋友的婚礼。
(2). to take charge of管理,照管 They attended our affairs during our absence.他们在我们不在时管理事务。
6.attend to
(1).to take care; give attention关注;注意We’ll attend to that problem later.稍后我们将关注那个问题。
I have an urgent matter to attend to.
我有一件很要紧的事要料理。
(2).to take care of照顾;帮助 You’d better attend to that thin dark girl; I think she is going to faint.你最好照顾一下那又瘦又黑的女孩; 我想她快要晕倒了。
Are you being attended to, sir? 先生,请问是否有人接待你了?
7.rare
adj.(1). infrequently occurring; uncommon罕见的;很少发生的;特殊的This plant is rare in this region.这类植物在本地区是很少见的。
That bird is very rare in this country.那种鸟在这个国家很稀有。
(2). cooked a short time to retain juice and redness煮得很嫩的 We had three courses: soup, a rare steak and vegetables, and fruit. 我们有三道菜:汤、鲜嫩的牛排和蔬菜,还有水果。
9.do up
(1).to fasten 扣(纽扣)Do up your coat and hurry.把衣服扣好,快。
This dress does up at the back. 这衣服在背后扣扣子。
(2).to repair, improve整理(房间)Let’s do up the room first.我们先把房子整理一下。
(3).to adorn or dress lavishly精心打扮:打扮得花枝招展 The children were all done up in matching outfits.孩子们都穿戴上比赛服装。
(4).to wrap and tie (a package)包,扎(包裹),捆(东西) He was doing up a parcel.他正在捆包。
10.worn
adj.(1). affected or damaged by wear or use穿旧的;用旧的;穿破的 He decided to throw the worn shoes away and buy a new pair. 他决定把穿坏的鞋扔了,再买一双新的。
These shoes are looking rather worn.这双鞋子不成样子了。
(2). showing the wearing effects of overwork, care, worry, or suffering疲倦的;筋疲力尽的 She came back worn and worried.她回来时既疲惫又忧虑。
I was shocked to see the worn look of his handsome young face. 我看到他那张年轻英俊的脸上显出憔悴的神色,十分地吃惊。
11.double
vt. (1). to fold in two把…对折 She doubled the cover and put it over her child. 她把被子折起来,盖在孩子身上。
He doubled the slice of bread to make a sandwich.她把面包叠起来,做了个三明治。
(2). to make twice as great使加倍I must doubt the amount, or it won’t be enough.我得把数量加一倍,不然不够。
The boss will double my wages.老板要给我发双份工资。
vi. (1). to be increased twofold增为两倍 The debt soon doubled.债务不久就增了一倍。
(2). to turn sharply or all the way around; reverse one’s course急转或绕回;返回 The baseball player had to double back to touch the missed base. 棒球运动员必须紧急转身回头触垒。
n. (1). something increased twofold二倍;加倍 He took double of what the other children did.他所拿的两倍于其他小孩 (2). one that closely resembles another; a duplicate相似者 Have you ever met your double? 你曾遇到和你相似的人吗?
12.fix
vt.(1). to direct steadily使集中,使固定 She fixed her eyes on the road ahead.她盯着前面的路(2). to place securely; make stable or firm使固定,使稳定 Campers fixed the tent poles in the ground. 露营者把帐篷的柱子固定在地上。
(3). to capture or hold 吸引,抓住 The man with the long beard fixed our attention.那个长长胡须的人吸引了我们的注意力。
(4). to agree on; arrange同意;安排 Later, we fixed a time to meet next time.随后,我们安排下一次会面的时间。
13.approve
vt. (1). to consider right or good; think or speak favorably of赞成, 满意, 批准My parents don’t approve of me smoking cigarettes. 我的父母不准许我吸烟。
(2). to consent to officially or formally; confirm or sanction认可;通过 The resolution was approved 82 to 16 with 18 abstentions.决议以八十二票对十六票通过,十八票弃权。
vi. to show, feel, or express approval同意赞成,赞同(常与of连用) I don’t approve of wasting time.我不赞成浪费时间。
I don’t approve of smoking.我不赞成抽烟。
