13. New smart wheelchairs are designed to allow users more freedom of movement. Some even allow them to raise or lower the seats or to go up and down stairs. Now, Scewo, a Swiss company, has designed their futuristic motorized wheelchair Scewo Bro that is a complete solution — This smart wheelchair is so advanced and multi-task that it won the Design Prize in 2021 and has been recognized as a pioneer in the medical technology industry.
With clearly defined lines and a reduction to the essentials, the design team developed a clear design language. That way, Scewo Bro is seen as a new generation of wheelchairs at first glance. Scewo Bro users can control the wheelchair either by a touch interface (界面) or a smartphone. They can switch from one to the other and can also choose from three different modes: park mode, drive mode, and track mode. Built with safety in mind, the seat always balances itself so the user stays in a sitting position. This feature allows users to deal with different terrains without the risk of tipping over. Besides, the foot rests, seat, and arm rests are designed to be comfortable and adjustable.
The smart wheelchair can go up to 35 kilometers on one charge and can go 10 kilometers per hour. If a break is needed, just put the chair into the relaxation position. The smart wheelchair comes with two secure storage areas for people on the go to store valuables. It can fit in the trunk of a car and can be charged in just five hours, whose awesomeness is more than you expected.

14. Opening a good book can take you on an adventure — but sometimes, it’s not what’s on the pages, but what’s been left in them, that’s the most exciting. Sharon McKellar, a librarian at the Oakland Public Library, has been collecting forgotten mementos (纪念品) left in library books. Now, she’s finally found a use for all the old family photos, notes, recipes and concert tickets she’s collected over the years.
McKellar started the “Found in a Library Book” project — an online database of all the things found in books at the library in Oakland, California. It started out as her personal collections, she said, but it grew when other library staff members started submitting artifacts (人工制品), too.
“I put out a call to other library staff members, just to see if anybody had anything they’d be willing to share, and was just totally flooded with other people’s little collections of things they had found,” McKellar said. “So, as soon as I realized it wasn’t just me who had these things and enjoyed these things, it was an easy decision to keep it going.” McKellar has added 370 artifacts to the library’s online database — but she said she had a couple hundred more to upload.
The project is fairly new, but McKellar hopes it inspires people to dive into books at their local library, because you never know what you’ll find: maybe an old baby photo or a ticket to a 2004 Oakland A’s game.
“Y ou just have a sense of shared space in a way. So even if you don’t know which book this thing came from, even if you’re not the one who found it, you still have a sense that the owner of this thing is in the same community as you or was in the same community as you, using the same resources,” McKellar said. “I think it is a way to sort of feel a connection with people who you don’t even know through these objects.”
1. What might book borrowers do to the books?
A.Find a new use for them.B.Put some paper objects in them.
C.Leave them in public libraries.D.Share them through an online project.
2. Why could McKellar keep the project going?
A.She set it up online.B.She followed other librarians.
C.She got enough collections.D.She was supported financially.
3. What does McKellar expect the locals to do through the project?
A.Enjoy reading in the library.B.Draw inspiration from books.
C.Recognize what they have left.D.Make a contribution to society.
4. According to McKellar, what may the collections stand for?
A.A shared resource.B.People’s reading habits.
C.Librarians’ attitude to books.D.A bond with the community.
15. Amphora are clay jars originally invented in Egypt. They were so useful for storing and transporting wine at the time that they were eventually adopted by all of the cultures around the Mediterranean. It’s uncertain when they first arrived in Rome, but Greek colonists in southern Italy may have been the first to introduce them.
Previously, wine had been stored in leather sacks, but amphora offered several advantages to the Romans. They were airtight, strong, relatively lightweight, and had two large handles that made them easy to carry, an important feature at a time when almost everything had to be transported by hand.. Like modern wine bottles, aphora had long, narrow necks that limited the amount of wine exposed to the open air. Similar to modern wine bottles, most amphoras became gradually thinner at the end. It made them easy to bury in the ground, which kept them cool during the warm months.
Sealing up the top of an amphora was a major difficulty and a variety of methods were used. The Egyptians stopped theirs with leaves and reeds covered with clay. The Greeks and Romans used rags and cork sometimes. None of these techniques provided an airtight seal, so Aleppo Pine
resin(松脂)was used to seal the gaps around the top. It became so popular that resin was sometimes added to the wine in order to improve its flavor. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder, writing in the first century, recommended adding resin to wine and believed resin made from trees in the mountains created a better aroma than resin made from trees in the lowlands.
Though each amphora was constructed by hand, they were surprisingly uniform. Roman amphoras held one cubic foot of liquid, exactly seven gallons, and eventually became a standard unit of measurement throughout the Roman Empire. Unlike Greek amphora, Roman amphoras were not decorated. Before it dried, each amphora was given a stamp with the name of the workshop where it was manufactured or the workshop’s owner. Once the amphora was filled, its weight and contents were painted on the side.
1. What does an amphora look like?
A.B.
C.D.
2. Why did Aleppo Pine resin become popular in Rome?
A.It improved the flavor of wine.
B.It proved the best cover for amphoras.

D.It was used for decoration by women.
3. What can we infer about Roman amphoras from the last paragraph?
A.They had beautiful designs.
B.They had rough appearances.
C.They were of the same size.
D.They were a symbol of status for the Romans.
4. What does the word “aroma” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Market.B.Smell.

16. "The firefighters of Paris told me they are very hopeful about saving the northern tower, " French Junior Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Twitter late Monday, adding that the firefighting efforts would continue for hours.
The Notre Dame Cathedral(巴黎圣母院), one of the most famous landmarks in the French capital, was engulfed in flames Monday evening as a catastrophic fire tore through the historic structure, collapsing its spire as fire officials raced to save the monument from total destruction.
Video and photos posted on social media showed flames engulfing the cathedral, thus both the ceiling and the 90-meter spire came crashing down. The fire spread to one of the cathedral's towers, but French officials said late Monday that firefighters were optimistic they could save both towers.
French President Emmanuel Macron said a national fundraising campaign would be launched on Tuesday and called on the world's "greatest talents" to assist in the effort. "We will rebuild, Macron told reporters. "We will rebuild Notre Dame because this is what the French expect, because this is what our history deserves.
Officials said there were no deaths in the fire. Jean-Claude Gallet, chief of the Parisian fire department, said one firefighter was injured while responding to the flame. Two-thirds of the cathedral's roof was destroyed, Gal let said. The fire broke out just before p. m. minutes after the cathedral, which has been partly rebuilt, closed to the public. Around 30 000 people visit the church daily.
Despite its long history and many treasures the Cathedral needed the help of a writer to become truly famous. Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, presented the building to a wide audience of readers. The book's ugly lead character, Quasimodo, serves as a symbol for Paris forgotten Gothic architecture. Hugo wrote the book to remind people of it, with hope they would work to protect the beautiful old buildings of Paris. The loss of cultural relics will never come again if they are lost only once. This is a painful loss of world civilization.
1. The following issues are wrongly stated in the text except________________.
A.the Notre Dame Cathedral was totally destroyed
B.firefighters were pessimistic because they couldn't save both towers
C.a national fundraising campaign would be launched to rebuild the cathedral

A.A fire broke out in the Notre Dame Cathedral
B.The mystery of the Notre Dame Cathedral
C.A national fundraising campaign

七、阅读理解
17. The millipede (千足虫)
Forest life
1 We enjoy watching television programs about bears, bats or monkeys. We knew a lot about their lives: how they find food or what they
do at different times of the year. But what about smaller animals that are more difficult to see or film?
2 A French scientist, Francois-Xavier, Joly, is studying one of them — the millipede.
The importance of leaves
When leaves begin to die in autumn, they turn from green to yellow and fall from the trees.
3 Life in the forest needs these nutrients— without them, plants could not grow and so there would be no food for other animals.
Food on the forest floor
Some living things, like mushrooms, break the leaves into smaller pieces and eat them. In a few months there is nothing left of them. But for mushrooms, not all trees are the same. Mushrooms prefer some types of leaves to others. This means that some leaves take much longer to break down than others, sometimes years. So what happens to these? 4
More on the menu
The millipede also likes leaves and it eats any type. But when it has finished, it produces waste. This waste then becomes the food of mushrooms.
When mushrooms eat leaves they choose only certain types — But when they eat waste, they will eat any kind. 5
So next time you are walking through a forest, remember that something may be having a meal right under your feet!
A.This is where the millipede can help.
B.However, not all leaves are equally rich.
C.Millipedes do amazing things in the soil in our forests.
D.Forests are amazing places, and so are the animals that live in them.
E.As they break down on the ground, nutrients are returned to the soil.
F.Many small animals that live in forests are very important for the soil.
G.This is how the millipede turns dead leaves into food for others and helps life continue.
