Bobby White works as a police officer in Gainesville, Florida. One day, he was told to investigate a noise complaint. A group of boys were playing basketball in the street. Instead of blaming the boys or sending them home, White joined them. White started shooting baskets with the kids. And a few minutes later, some more boys came and played the game. The camera on White’s police car recorded the event. The police department posted the video online. It was seen over 15 million times.
Before he left the boys, White said he would come back again with “backup”. That is what police officers say when they are appealing for help from other officers.
As the video spread, a basketball star became interested in what happened in Gainesville. That player was Shaquille O’Neal. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the National Basketball Association championship. He also played for the Orlando Magic, a team not far from Gainesville.
The other day, O’Neal visited the Gainesville police and spoke with White. And then they went out to “the scene”. That is what police officers call the area where a crime happened. But of course, there was no crime.
This time, White told the boys, “I told you I was going to bring some backup. Right? You guys ready?” And O'Neal turned up from a nearby car. The kids got really excited. O'Neal played basketball with the boys and other officers as a crowd gathered. O’Neal even tually gathered the boys together and gave some wise words, “Be a leader, not a follower”, “Respect your peers(同龄人) and your elders”, and “You can be whatever you want to be”.
21. Why didn’t White send the kids home?
A. He was also a basketball fan.
B. The kids didn’t play in the street.
C. He didn’t think it was a problem.
D. The kids promised not to make
a noise.
22. What did the police department officials probably think of White’s deed?
A. It was illegal.
B. It was useless.
C. It deserved praise.
D. Explanation should be offered.
23. Who did the backup turn out to be?
A. The boys’ peers.
B. Bobby White himself.
C. Some other police officers.
D. A well-known basketball player.
24. What was O’Neal’s main purpose in arriving at “the scene”?
A. To teach the kids a lesson.
B. To encourage and help the kids.
C. To teach the kids to play basketball.
D. To help the police look into the crime.

Bullets (子弹) are known for their ability to kill. However, not all bullets are bad. Magic bullet is something that solves a difficult problem easily. But there is not one thing that solves a dif ficult problem. For example, let’s say a country is suffering from a weak economy. It raises various social issues. People want change and protest (抗议) in the streets. However, there is no magic bullet to cure all these problems.
To take a bullet for someone is a good thing. Well, the thought behind this expression is a good thing. It means you are willing to harm yourself to protect someone else. This often sounds like a tough expression. Mothers might not say “I’d take a bullet for my child”, but they wo uld. People in the army, however, might say, “I’d take a bullet for you, man.”
When you sweat bullets you are very nervous or anxious about something. What does dodging a bullet mean? For example, let’s say you get up late for work. Your boss has warned you that if you are late again, you may get fired. When you arrive at the office, you are sweating bullets. However, you need not worry. As it turns out, your boss is out sick that day. You have dodged a bullet.
To ease the pain of a difficult situation, people are sometimes asked to bite the bullet. What is the origin of this expression? During the Civil War, pain-killing drugs were often hard to find. So, doctors working on the battlefield would give their patients something to bite on. Many times it was a bullet. Hollywood movies helped to keep this expression alive. In old western movies, more than one cowboy was seen biting a bullet, perhaps drinking some wine, while removing an arrow from his body. In modern conversation, biting the bullet means to accept a difficult decision or situation.
25. What does the author think of a magic bullet?
A. Unrealistic.
B. Valuable.
C. Approachable.
D. Necessary.
26.Whose actions speak louder than words according to the author?
A. Bosses’.
B. Doctors’.
C. Soldiers’.
D. Mothers’.
27. What can we say when we avoid a bad thing luckily?
A. Sweat bullets.
B. Dodge a bullet.
C. Take a bullet for someone.
D. Be faster than a speeding bullet.
28. What is the meaning of “bite the bullet” nowadays?
A. Reduce one’s pain.
B. Act too nervously.
C. Drink too much wine.
D. Have to do something unpleasant.

By day, Clark Kent is a journalist who fights for truth and disadvantaged groups in Metropolis. But when the shy man removes his glasses, Clark Kent is gone. He becomes Superman. Not even his colleagues, including Lois Lane who often reports stories about Superman, realize that the flying superhero works with them. Personally, I’ve always found Superman’s “disguise (伪装)”extremely funny, but th en again it’s just something you accept as part of the Superman universe. However, obviously wearing glasses does indeed make it hard for people to recognize you, according to a recent study.
People of Metropolis are not the fools everyone thinks they are. Researchers from University of York’s Department of Psychology showed participants faces of people. The pictures were presented in pairs in three groups: glasses-wearing faces, a pair with only one person wearing glasses, and finally a pair with no one wearing glasses. Each participant had to judge whether the faces shown in each pair were the same person or not.
In those cases where both of the faces wore glasses or where neither wore glasses, participants were right 80 percent of the time. When one face wore glasses, and the other didn’t, participants were much less able to identify when the same person was there, scoring about six percent lower.
These findings suggest that, generally, people find it difficult to match strangers’ faces. When they wear gla sses, the challenge is even greater.
Besides proving Clark Kent could have actually made it, the results could be useful to improve the security of passports and other ID cards.
“We hope that this research can be used by governments to help inform future policies on identification for security purposes, particularly in the UK where individuals who normally wear glasses are required to remove them for their identification cards,” the researchers wrote.
29.What did the author think of Superman’s disguise?
A. Unnecessary.
B. Logical.
C. Smart.
D. Unique.
30. What were the participants supposed to do with each pair of faces?
A. Understand the importance of wearing glasses.
B. Tell whether they belong to the same person or not.
C. Explore the differences between the two faces.
D. Realize how wearing glasses can trick people.
31. How can the research finding be applied to the UK’s security policies?
A. Passports would include more pictures of a person.
B. Individuals have to take off their glasses in public.
C. All the passports and ID cards need to be updated.
D. People could probably wear glasses for their ID cards.
32. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A study on wearing glasses.
B. Why does Superman wear glasses?
C. Superman’s disguise i s not that stupid.
D. Remove your glasses for security purposes.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处得最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
Our habits are what shape us---our words, our behavior, and even our life itself.
36
●Pity yourself.
All bad habits start with never-ending pity for your unhappy self and talking endlessly about your bad luck. Your figure, income, education, apartment, the weather, and even the tiniest inconvenience can become a cause for feeling upset. Those who develop the habit of pitying themselves lose the sympathy (同情) of people around them. 37
●Assess everything in terms of money.
Some people think that happiness can be achieved by having lots of money and that you can’t really enjoy life if you don’t wear fancy clothes, live in a big house or drive an expensive car. 38 Instead, they think it’s their abili ty to attract it. A truly successful person is not totally dependent on his or her money.
●39
Scientists say that people who don’t feel like they belong in their jobs are very likely to feel unhappy and live in poverty. The reason for this is their feelings that make them do what they don’t want and don’t like to do. To get rid of this habit for good, you should put your strength and energy into something satisfying. This is the only way to achieve excellent results.
●Stay away from your relatives.
40 . An d that’s obvious, because it’s the only place where you can find relief and support when everything comes crashing down around you.
A. Do what you don’t like.
B. It’s time to change your living pattern!
C. As a result, they often have low-paid jobs.
D. Nobody wants to be around those people.
E. Most successful people love and cherish their family the most.
F. And among them are some habits that should be avoided at all costs.
G. However, wise people do not refer to wealth as the amount of money they get. 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

Dear Henry,
I'm sorry to hear that you got burnt while assisting your parents to do housework and that you need to take several weeks to heal at home. It was very considerate of you to help them do it at weekends. Here are some of my suggestions which are beneficial to your recovery.
During your recovery, for one thing, pay attention to not rubbing your wounds, otherwise they may get infected. For another, it is definitely boring during the rest days while staying in bed. You’d better take advantage of this time to read your favourite novels or keep in touch with all your good friends through E-chat,which can keep you a good mood.
I hope that you can take good care of yourself. I am convinced that only after you do as I have told you to will you be well soon.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
