13、“Get up, get up, Jim. It’s time to get up!” My mother said while she was pushing me. I opened my eyes and looked at the clock. “Oh dear! It’s a quarter past eight already.” I’ll be late for school again,” I thought. I jumped out of the bed,
washed my face, and then hurried to the bus stop without breakfast. As soon as I got on the bus, it started running. “I’m sure I can get to school in time,” I said to myself. Suddenly the bus stopped. The bus drive r got off the bus, then got on the bus again and said, “I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen. There’s something wrong with the bus. Please get off the bus and wait for another one.” “I couldn’t wait. The school isn’t far. I’d better run to school,” I thought, a nd then I began to run. But before I got to school, it began to rain hard.
I reached the classroom but I was wet shivering with cold. The math teacher had already begun his lesson. It was Mr. Smith. He was very strict with his students and the students were a little afraid of him and so was I. I liked neither him nor his math lessons. I hesitated (犹豫) for a moment, and then I opened the door. “I’m very sorry, Mr. Smith. I’m late again,” I said with a red face.
“It’s you again, Jim,” Mr. Smith said angrily, “I’ve told you not to be late, but you...” he suddenly stopped and looked at my wet clothes. He turned to the class and said, “I’m very sorry, boys and girls. ” With these words he quickly took off his own jacket and handed it to me. “Now, take off your wet coat and put on this one or you’ll catch cold,” he said kindly.
I went to my seat with Mr. Smith’s jacket on. It was a bit larger for me but I felt very warm in it. I found, for the first time, math was so interesting and how well I could understand it!

14、Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics (特点) which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame (声誉) .
A hero has powers (力量) larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero, and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for? If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Jr., Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colors of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of change would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they make the society develop so rapidly.
1.According to this passage, a hero is a person who always .
A.gives us courage B.thinks highly of others
C.shares great fame D.stands on the mountaintop
2.If you want to live like a hero, you should .

4.Black people in America used to before Martin Luther King, Jr.
A.shop at the white’s stores B.take buses with the white
C.take walks in the white’s parks D.eat in restaurants without the white
5.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We don’t need heroes anymore at some point now.
B.Heroes are all the same though different in cultures.
C.People get power from heroes to move to a new place.
D.Our society has developed faster because of heroes in history.

15、Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to connect the brain with computers. Braincomputer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two scientists, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytehnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, show a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of body cells(细胞). These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓) to the body part to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries(脊柱受伤) or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the body part.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outer world and also to control machines.”
The scientists designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer finds meanings of the signals and commands the wheelchair with an engine. The wheelchair also has two cameras that tell objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain. Prof. Millan , the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that finds meanings of brain signals and turns them into simple commands.” The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two kinds: communication, and controlling objects. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can get advantages from. And the other is sure that they can use the technology for long.

16、When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn’t a good student. He listened to me quietly, and th en he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.
I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, yo u’ll find it will be helpful to you. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right.”

17、Now scientists have discovered that the dogs behave like their masters, too. Just like children, they us e a “ look and learn” ways when they go about their tasks.
Scientists at Oxford universities designed an experiment to test if the dogs have the ability to copy humans’ actions by using a simple wooden box. 10 owners showed their dogs how to open the wooden box .Sometimes they use their heads to push it and sometimes they use their hands.
10 dogs were divided into two groups---Group1 and Group2. In the first part of the test, Group1 were rewarded with a piece of meat for copying their owner’s actions. Group2 were rewarded with food for not copying and using other ways. With each dog the experiment was repeated hundreds of times. Scientists recorded the time to see which group was first to get 85% right. They found that Group1finished the task much sooner than Group2.
In the second part of the test, all the dogs were only rewarded for copying the way that their owners used. Group1 reached the 85% mark more quickly than Group2.
So the scientists draw a conclusion: “Like humans, dogs can copy actions that they see. Dogs’ imitative(仿效的)behavior is shaped more by their interactions(互动)with humans than by evolution(进化).”
Scientists said,“A dog’s behavior is influenced much like that of a child; they look and learn similar behavior. We hope that owners understand the importance of their actions and use this knowledge to set good examples and therefore have a good effect on the behavior of their pets.”

19、With the development of economy, mobile phones are more and more widely used in our daily life. However, some students and teachers have different ideas about if the students should own their mobile phones at school.
Some students think that they may have their own mobile phones. If so, they can contact their parents when necessary. On the other hand, they can read news with it. Besides that, they can easily search for information they need. However, some teachers are against it. They think that students not only play games but also send answers to each other in exams with mobile phones. What’s worse, students spend too much time on them at night so that they are sleepy in class in the day time.
In my opinion, students needn’t own mobile phones. We must focus on our study. Even if we need call somebody, we can ask our teachers for help.。
