The Most Beautiful Great Recess: Strong and Healthy Youth
Recess time is the best part of the school day! I can't wait for the bell to ring so I can run outside and play with my friends. The playground is our kingdom and the games we play are epic battles and amazing adventures.
When I was younger, recess was just running around chasing my buddies. We'd play tag or hide and seek, darting between the swings and slides. Those were such simple pleasures back then. As I've gotten older, the games have gotten more complex and competitive. The boys and girls tend to split up into different groups too.
My guy friends and I are really into sports lately. We compete fiercely at basketball, soccer, football, you name it. The basketball court becomes our stadium and the hoops are the goals we desperately fight to claim. "Air ball!" we'll taunt when someone misses a shot. The endless trash talking and
one-upmanship to see who's the most athletic is all in good fun though.
Sometimes I look over at the groups of girls and it seems like their recess games are more cooperative than competitive.
They'll make up dances, sing songs, or play hand-clapping games in a circle. Every now and then I'll see them braiding each other's hair or just chatting away. I don't really get it, but hey, to each their own. As long as they're enjoying themselves, that's what matters.
For me though, recess is all about being active and working up a sweat. Moving my body and gettingsome exercise makes me feel strong, energetic, and focused for the rest of the school day. Sometimes the games can get pretty rough and tumble. I've gotten my fair share of scraped knees, bruises, and grass stains from diving for a loose ball or being tackled. No pain, no gain, I say!
The fresh air and sunshine are so revitalizing too. Breathing in the crisp outdoor breeze clears my head and boosts my mood.
I feel so lucky to have this big, open playground to run free. The jungle gym and monkey bars are my favorite - climbing up and hanging from them makes me feel like a little monkey myself!
Of course, not every day at recess is nonstop action and excitement. Sometimes I just lay on the grassy hill with some friends and talk or watch the clouds go by. Those moments of stillness and peace outdoors are precious too. I'll close my eyes and let the warm sun kiss my face as I recharge for a bit.
Inevitably though, I'll get that itch of restless energy building up inside me again. That's when I'll jump up, rallying my crew to start up another game. Maybe we'll have an epic kickball tournament or get in a few hard-fought innings of handball. No matter what, you'd better believe there will be lots of running, jumping, yelling, and laughter.
The laughter might be my favorite part. There's nothing like the uncontrolable, breathless giggling fits my friends and I get into when we're playing together. We'll collapse into hysterics over something silly, our bellies cramping from such intense laughter. Those moments of pure joy make recess a magical time.
When the recess bell rings to call us back inside, we're always so disappointed. Those 20-30 minutes fly by way too fast! We reluctantly put down the jump ropes and balls, wipe our sweaty brows, catch our breath, and trudge back to class. As tough as it is to leave the playground behind, at least we know we can recharge and come back to it tomorrow.
Recess isn't just playtime though - it's becoming a crucial part of staying strong and healthy. With childhood obesity on the rise, getting regular exercise and being physically active is more important than ever. Recess gives kids' bodies and minds a
much-needed break from being stuck at desks or staring at screens.
Experts say unstructured outdoor play is also great for developing creativity, problem-solving abilities, and social skills. When we make up our own games and settle our own disagreements at recess, we're figuring things out and building character. The playground becomes a kid society where we learn how to share, cooperate, follow rules, and be leaders.
So while it may just look like a bunch of kids running around and having fun, recess is actually fueling our growth and development in amazing ways. We're exercising our bodies and our minds, blowing off steam, and recharging our batteries. After working hard in the classroom, we get to cut loose and be kids again during that precious recess time.
Some of my favorite recess memories are from our special event days at school. Every year we'd have Turkey Trot before Thanksgiving break, where we'd run laps around the track or field to get some exercise before the big feast. Our school also did a Fun Run fundraiser where we'd collect pledges to run or walk as many laps as we could in a certain time period.
Field Day was always the biggest annual highlight though. Different activity stations would be set up all around the fields,
ranging from tug-of-war and obstacle courses to water balloon tosses and relay races. Everybody would get so pumped up, dressing in their classroom's designated color from head to toe and painting their faces to show team spirit. We'd spend the whole day rotating through the different events, winning points for our class with each completed challenge. Such fierce competition, but it was an absolute blast.
Whether it's an ordinary day on the playground or a special event celebration, recess is fuel for our bodies and souls. We come back to class feeling refreshed, re-energized, and ready to focus again. The physical activity gives our minds a reboot and clears the cobwebs. We're able to concentrate better, remember more, and stay on task.
Sometimes though, we get so caught up in our play that we're still wound up even after the recess bell rings! We might be a little too giddy and fidgety when we first get back to our desks. Our teachers understand though - they know we're kids just being kids. As long as we can settle back down after getting our sillies out, that short transition period of hyperness is no big deal.
After all, what's the point of being a kid if you can't act just a little wild and rambunctious sometimes? Recess gives us a sanctioned opportunity to be as loud, energetic, and
free-spirited as we want. We can take a break from having to sit still and be quiet. We're encouraged to run around outside, scream and shout, and get some of that restless energy out in a positive way.
Sportsmanship, teamwork, getting exercise, enjoying nature...we learn so many valuable lessons through the simple act of playing during recess. We have an absolute blast while building skills that will benefit us for life. Recess is shaping us into well-rounded, spirited, healthy young people.
That's why I cherish each minute I get to spend out on that playground. When I'm chasing, jumping, climbing, and laughing with my friends, I feel so alive and joyful. In those moments, recess is the most beautiful, wonderful part of my day. I'll hang up my jump rope and sneakers when I'm old, but never those memories of pure childhood bliss.。
